But they aren't issued in SUPT anymore, and it's a safe bet you'll be able to go your entire military career without ever having to use one.

Is it just me or is the media blowing this one way out of proportion? I get that it's going to make landfall in urban areas that aren't used to hurricanes, but it's a Cat I with winds at 85 knots. The Gulf Coast gets one of these every year, sometimes several. A friend of mine who lives in Baltimore posted on Facebook that this was "The Storm of the Century." But I'm deployed, so I don't get an update every 6-9 minutes on TV . . . .what am I missing?

It's true. Same thing for Ali Al Salem. Sounds like AFCENT delegated authorizing civilian clothes off duty to the individual Wings, so each base gets to set their own policy. My guess is nothing will change in Afghanistan, but if you are in one of the outlying "combat zones" (actualy phrase used by the command chief here to describe Salem) you'll get to wear your Bronie T-shirt and jorts when you aren't working.

I've got no data, but I'll throw out personal observation after 3 & 1/2 years as a T-6 IP: I can count 11 American students I had that I would classify as "full retard." The type of guys I just had no way of contemplating how they convinced anyone that they were capable of doing anything remotely as complicated as flying an airplane. I'm talking about guys that were so bad I wondered why we even bothered with IFS. 7 of them (64%) were AFA grads. I don't know what the percentage of UPT students who graduated from the Academy is, but it's not anywhere near 64% is it? Overall I never really saw a difference between the quality of student pilot between ROTC/OTS/AFA guys, but I considered it bizarre that a majority of the guys that were way out of their league came from the Academy. Don't know if this adds anything useful to the discussion, but it's always fun to make fun of UPT students.
