  2. I flew 172s several times in different states (not TX) while I was on leave in UPT. I had also heard a rumor I could never substantiate that I 'can't' go flying while in UPT. Whaaatever. I certainly wouldn't characterize myself as a '100 hour super student pilot'. But it was nice to make flying somewhat fun again for a .5 with my Dad. IPs and UPT suck in case you forgot. It's fun to go do something different from AF flying and just chill out. Variety is the spice of life.

  4. I didn't kill anybody, nor did I quit, but I wasn't accepted the 2nd time around. Transferred to a regular college with ROTC (I did AFROTC during my year at VF) and graduated 3 years later (1 year earlier than my bro's that did one year at VF, then 4 full years at the zoo. I actually ended up being a T-38IP for some of them as they came thru Columbus for UPT. Couldn't be happier with where I am right now. Hoser

  6. I’m a Falcon Scholar and a ‘98 graduate of Northwestern Preparatory School located in San Bernardino, CA. I HIGHLY recommend the program the Durbecks have set up. Hoser was right… there were a few people from on Falcon Scholarships that didn’t get in from my NWP class… that’s because they didn’t show up for inprocessing or they quit! Unless you frickin kill somebody (and don’t hide the body well), you’re going to be admitted to USAFA the 2nd time around. Another point that hasn’t been mentioned… once you accept the Falcon Scholarship, you are on contract with USAFA. The Falcon Foundation is basically an extension of the USAFA Admissions office. Another HUGE point… you don’t have to be on a scholarship to attend NWP. There were quite a few “free agents” at Northwestern who took their new SATs, ACTs, and CFT scores and applied to all of the academies. Some of them were accepted at all three! I guess I can say four… we did have one guy end up at USCGA. What will limit you is congressional nominations. Those are for a specific school, so in order to truly be accepted to two service academies, you would (for instance) have to have a USAFA nomination from you senator and a USNA nomination from your congressman. Go to https://www.northwesternprep.com/ for more information. Like ruckerstud said, you can’t apply for the Falcon Scholarship… you have to wait until you get your reject letter from USAFA, then you are automatically considered for the Falcon Scholarship. If you get it, they’ll call you. If you don’t, apply to NWP and be a free agent. If you want any more details, shoot. Good luck with whatever you choose.

  9. Just don't be an engineer major, period! Unless you have a desire to possibly follow a career in engineering, stay the hell away from it. I know several guys and gals in bad positions because their primary AFSC fell through for various reasons. You know what the AF told them? Oh, your major is ### engineering? That's what your new job is! You DO NOT have to be an engineer to be a pilot. The living proof of that is all around you. This biology major is here to tell you do what you LIKE. If that's engineering, be prepared to be pigeon-holed into that career field later. If you want to fly, do something you're good at that will present yourself well for the boards.

  11. Ucf, I’ve been considering selling it as well. The thing is, it’s an 03 Tacoma with less than 40k mi on it… I’ve already eaten the new car cost on it. I’m not upside down on the loan, so I could come out ‘even’ on what I still owe, but I still paid out the butt to get a new truck. It’s a Toyota, I was already planning on keeping it until the wheels fall off. As long as keeping it in storage isn’t going to shorten its useful life, I think I’m going to go with that. Then I can return from Japan in 09 and OWN a Toyota with less than 40k mi on it… I agree, it sucks to continue to make new truck payments on a truck that is sitting in a garage in the US, but I’ll have it paid off when I return, and I’m weighing that pretty heavily. It’s kind of a lose/lose situation, the question is how much will I lose? If I don’t hear any horror stories about govt sponsored vehicle storage, I think I’m gonna go that route.
  12. Has anyone had any experience with storing your POV while you’re on overseas PCS orders? I’m going to Yokota and the word is the military won’t ship a POV to/from Japan (in addition to cutting your HHG allowance in ½). Corpus TMO gave me some info about government sponsored POV storage. You must be on OCONUS PCS orders to a place “where POVs cannot be shipped or where extensive modification of the vehicle would be required.” I also understand the storage contractor will “perform monthly maintenance, run the vehicles every 30 days and cycle the heating and air conditioning, and move the vehicles every 30 days to prevent flat spots on tires.” Has anyone had any experience with this program? I’m a little tentative about leaving my truck in storage for 3 years, but it looks like it might be the only option I’ve got unless I want to sell it. Let the horror stories fly…

  15. I'm a big fan of Serengeti sunglasses in the plane... they have 'photochromic' glass lenses that adjust to changing light conditions. I wear the Pisa... it cuts through haze like nothing else! I was wearing some Arnettes while on a flight with an IP in Corpus on a very hazy day. He gave me his Serengetis to try on when I was having trouble finding a ground reference and BAM it popped out of nowhere! Once you try these lenses you will never go back. That photochromic lens was developed for driving but it works great for flying as well. https://www.serengeti-eyewear.com/products/plastics/pisa.cfm Not cheap but will sharpen your acuity outside the cockpit on hazy days.   17. I showed up to Corpus in January 05 and just drove around the island looking for house rentals. There are a TON of private renters that don’t necessarily advertise with the local real estate agencies. If you go strictly through the agencies you will be led to believe there are only a few houses for rent. I highly recommend the ‘drive around’ method. I also have a dog, so my wife and were limited to getting a house with a yard. Go onto the island, make a right at the 2nd light (Whitecap). There are networks of streets back there with many different styles of house, including some with boat slips right out back. My wife and I even bartered the guy down $200 a month on the rent… they LOVE military back there (big surprise). The thing you’ve gotta watch out for is the yard. Many of the renters opt for the low maintenance ‘rock yard’ with absolutely no grass for dogs. You’ll have to drive around and see what’s available, but I looked at several houses with grass yards. They are in the minority, but they’re there. I just left Corpus the last week in August and there are more houses there now than ever! Almost every street has some new construction… you will be able to find something if you drive around.

  20. If you've been considering FAIPing all the way into T-38s, why didn't you tell all your classmates? I guarantee you would have been EVERYONE's best friend, not to mention the gallons of free beer. If you’re so confused that you think FAIPing is a good deal, all your classmates will want to keep you just drunk enough that you won’t convince yourself otherwise. It’s not too late! Get the word out today! And if you need help with that beer let me know.
