  1. I blew over that intentionally, maybe at the detriment of my point. In recent history the helos have been cleared to execute while the escort fighters have been told to stand down. I'm not sure of the timeline, but it was around the same time that you lead the effort to pickup the F-14 crew in OIF.
  2. History says you are wrong. But it's all a moot point, an HV-22 is completely beyond the budget for CRH.
  3. The part about this that kills me is that sweet I'm SOF seems to think it's bad form to ask advice from the old guys. Surely their experience means nothing, and I should only look to the guys that made rank. Fuck the mission, successful promotion is all that matters.
  4. You already said it, a relatively uncontested LZ and the farther away the more it favors the V-22. Keep in mind PR is not just CSAR. I'm not saying a V-22 is an appropriate replacement for the 60, but it fits very well into the Air Force's core function of PR it just happens to be in AFSOC which means it's masters consider it a SOF asset, not a PR asset. But had nothing to do with why the GAO upheld the protest, the AF fucked up their accounting based on what they said in the RFP. The UH-60 is a medium lift aircraft, the combat ready HH-60G really isn't.
  5. The V-22 is a great choice for PR for some situations, and a terrible choice for PR in others. The bottom line is that we need to have a capability to ensure that any pink body that is at risk has a chance of getting home if shit goes pear shaped. PR is a core function, if shit goes bad are you prepared to step up and make sure that you've done everything possible to make sure your bro gets home? If your answer is those Sandy/Jolly/Other Rescue guys will take care of it, well your shit is probably in the street.
  6. Simply put: you can read anyone's medal description from the last ten years and change out the names, and it'll read exactly the same. Sometimes you're in the right place at the the right time to get some of the glory light, but in the end it doesn't really matter. The only thing that matters is if you can stand tall in front of your bros at the bar and tell your story to include all the warts (you know you fucked things up) and say you did the best you could, and drink to those that didn't make it.
  7. In contrast, the New Zealand Army adopts the local aboriginal heritage and isn't hammered for it.
  8. 80's Datsun? More like trading in a Ferrari for a rock crawling Jeep. Horses for courses my friend.
  9. Guard/Reserve are the only examples I know of. 60 Driver is a former A-10 guy now Pavehawk guy up in Alaska.
  10. I would want to lead it.
  11. Holy fucking shit, they're buying super powerful hollow point ammo and .357 magnum ammo that can go through walls! Someone go see if FEMA is building internment camps! What Vertigo said, yawn.
  12. Typical Welsh, the man knows how to communicate and lead. Lead the way Boss, I'm with you.
  13. Nope, I take away your GPS and require you to execute over 400nm. Your INS has inherent errors, can you meet your TOT? It's as simple as that.
  14. If the Sikh dude/sister's response is really "we're going to get more involved with the community" so that people get a better understanding of their people, well wow. Good on them for having such a level headed and well intentioned response, they are truly better human beings than me.
  15. You're right, I over generalized and left out AFSOC and the smaller niche aircraft. However, there is a stark difference between not carrying sectionals and expecting a co-pilot to successfully navigate to a set of coordinates with no nav system, TOT +- 30 seconds. It's not that hard but you do need to practice.
  16. Rainman, this is where the fear of VFR comes from. Outside of Hogs and Helos, how many pilots navigate by looking at the ground as a matter of routine? If they don't carry sectionals they sure as shit don't use 1:250/1:100/1:50.
  17. ATC buffoonery article that ends with: The two planes landed without incident. Awesome
  18. Wait, does anyone really think not having your name written in a fucking dash one is even remotely close to deserving of anything? WTFO? Pubs checks are fucking stupid.
  19. I goofed around with a sheet of photography film (used to change the color of flash light) and the black/white swap function o my iPad, and it was tolerable but wasn't nearly as good as a true NVIS compliant filter. The ghetto system would work fine for instrument approaches because who cares if the colors are off, but if you needed true color representation the NVIS filter won't alter the colors, so red will still be red, etc. The NVIS filter will also make it so you can stare at the filtered screen and not bloom your goggles. All that said, it isn't all that hard to just manage where you shine that screen and put the stupid thing away when it will be a distraction.
  20. He was talking about the people not the aircraft itself.
  21. Badfnz, The biggest advantage of the J will be reliability. As MX cancel rates go down, guys will get to train more and then we can really look at what more the HC can do.
  22. The mission hasn't and won't change, it's personnel recovery. How the HC contributes to that mission may change or evolve over time, but the overall mission remains the same. Don't pick HC-130s if you want to do tactical airdrop/mod-contour/HAAR, pick it because you want to help save lives.
  23. With RWQC going the way of the dodo, your chance is slim. But call the AFPC functional and ask. The worst he can say is no.
  24. Sounds like a party, what's the problem?
  25. The problem is SAF/IA is insanely protective of TTPs, to the point of stupidity.
