Sorry man, that was a generic “your,” not an actual comment on FourFans’ v1 cut performance. But I see how it came off that way. My bad. “Don’t piss off the union” - absolutely, and that’s common sense. Airlines are a union job, so regardless of one’s opinions on unions in general, just accept you’re going to be part of one and ask your indoc bros (who came from another 121 job) questions about all the things you don’t understand. All of this can easily be accomplished without delving into RLA-specific knowledge. And if someone actually steps on their dick in indoc with the union (never once have heard of that), then they’re one of those ultra low SA types who were going to make life hard for themselves regardless.

Zero impact for not knowing a single bit of the RLA when I started flying the line. This is like arguing B-Course studs should have a working knowledge of the NDS prior to TR-1. But the great part is this is all subjective and people can feel free to study whatever they want. I’m sure the sim IPs will be impressed with your RLA knowledge after your multiple failed attempts at V1 cuts.

Local level is where you get the most bang for your buck. The public school system is a disaster - but it’s a good example of something local that regular people need to step up and run for. We have to rid our local boards, councils, etc. of all the shitty people. If we don’t, we get exactly what we deserve.

Deciding if you want the industry, talk to bros currently doing it and get multiple perspectives. The best learning on company stuff, contract, schedule/QOL/pay management, etc. is in cruise or a few beers deep at the bar. But, learn the RLA before getting hired? GTFO.

Generally agree with Prozac above. Though currently the dem party is way further off the rails than the GOP; they’re actions, policies, and words are not defensible in any rational way. But to Prozac’s point, in no way does that mean it couldn’t be the GOP way off the rails in X years. The zero sum game ideology is crushing us.

I know it’ll never happen, but all it would take is the pilot groups to not pickup premium trips for probably a few days - it would be a systemic meltdown of epic proportions. Management would capitulate immediately. But they know that’ll never happen, so they don’t worry about it. Not a spear at those taking premium, as it’s illogical not to, considering those individuals also know the mass “don’t do it” won’t ever happen.

There’s been several statements recently from those on the wrong side of history that go something like, “let’s just all move on and let bygones be bygones, we only did/said things based on our understanding at the time. Let’s just forget about it all!” Yeah, fuck you. I will not forget, and I hope everyone else doesn’t either. If you demonized others via words (or worse, actions) who called it correctly, but weren’t in line with your thinking at the time - you don’t get a pass because you are still a huge POS. This does not apply to those who remained respectful and maintained human decency despite differing viewpoints.

I’ll just say it - a lot of people had these same thoughts when younger, but they won’t admit it out loud while simultaneously throwing out “officer first.” They’re correct in that statement, but it’s not so black and white, and that’s OK. I understand where you’re at/coming from. I won’t rehash in detail, as Oface is correct about a lot of info in the “archives,” but big pic… AD - If looking at OTS route, you can decline any “offer,” so you’re not stuck. There’s a lot more details on that you’ll have to go read yourself. ROTC/USAFA is not a guarantee, but ultimately my opinion is those who should get a pilot slot typically do, with minor exceptions. ANG/AFRC - “Guaranteed,” but you have to get hired. That is a very competitive process and definitely risk of not making it. Go read about it. My opinion - Try for ANG, AFRC, AD in that order. Once you’re getting “old” on the interview circuit, consider putting your hat into the AD ring. Regardless of which component you may go to, be good with being a non-flying officer for at least 4 years, as there’s lots of hurdles to stumble over on your way to being a MR wingman or co-pilot.

For every useless “chief” there’s an equally useless O-6+. I don’t get the feeling MAJCOM, CAF vs. MAF, etc. really changes that in any appreciable way. Generally it seems when dudes go E-8/O-6+, many get that fabled “lobotomy,” and only a few remain mission-oriented bros. The guard is far better than AD with this subject. -

My experience is limited to Airbus, but even a basic ILS without automation would not be a big deal for single pilot in a mil application scenario (we’re not talking about getting slam dunked into LGA during shit winter WX). I have no doubt the old steam engine types are a different story. I think the mis-branding of this whole thing discussed above is a good way to couch the scenario; this all makes a lot more sense when we’re talking ACE and not necessarily landing at a location with a squadron of bros rested and ready to fly that jet’s next line (e.g. current status quo). In such a scenario, it’s probably a good idea to look at how we can extend crews capability to meet the mission while reducing risk as much as feasible (e.g. single pilot ops during X phase of flight while other dude is racked out).

This line is what has been said for decades by old fighter guys about the new guys as things changed. Wingman today are expected to do things that “only an experienced 4FL/IP” was capable of doing without fucking it away 15 years ago. Technology and ways of thinking change, and the young guys will perform. Your “old crusty guy” mindset serves as a roadblock to tactical progress; instead, empower the young guys to succeed in ways that was thought “impossible” when you were their age. Don’t read this the wrong way, the above is a general statement meant for wide application, it’s not meant to be specific to the wartime single pilot ops scenario. I agree with you overall on that scenario - hard to imagine what problem we’re trying to solve…unless maybe they’re planning on changing the chow hall food contract and know 80% of pilots will be shitting their brains out at any given moment.

I also fly big airplanes, so I’m not completely clueless. We’re also talking about a single pilot shooting an approach to Guam, etc. in combat. It’s not DL69 with 169 pax and absolutely zero mission to accomplish. Let’s not pretend they’re the same thing. And to your jab at the fighter community, it’s true admin kills guys, but it’s also true probably tens of thousands of precision approaches are flown for every guy who killed himself trying to fly an ILS. I think it’s what you know, and a lot of heavies-from-the-start guys sell their’s and their bro’s capabilities short, because, well, that’s just how it’s always been… Edit: To be clear, I’m not supporting this whole idea being discussed, but I am pointing out there are some things that are overblown…such as one man being able to fly an ILS and put his own gear down.

Valid, but I hope to hell they didn’t design a plane where only the right seater could reasonably select flaps and gear. Granted my big airplane experience is limited, but I’ve never seen an airliner where you couldn’t manipulate flaps, throttle, gear, etc. from either seat.

But why were you not recommended for service? The detailed “why” will absolutely be asked in an interview, so if you don’t want to put it out on the internet, then at least be prepared to answer the mail to an interview board.

Large scale RPA tankers makes a ton of sense. Maybe a couple operators manage several aircraft at a time, much like airline dispatchers - don’t exceed a 4:1 ratio or something like that. I’m surprised we haven’t come further on this topic; the MQ-25 is nothing more than proof of concept.

I’m hoping the actions of people like us will be what ultimately corrects corporate America back to how they should act. I think it’ll happen, but how long it’ll take is the million dollar question.
