If you’re family is over there for semi-permanently, you will get OHA instead of BAH. I think Korea requires visitors to not exceed 90 days in country at a time (doing so requires a work/student visa). I remember guys’ wives every 90 days taking a trip somewhere (anywhere that’s not Korea) for even a few days (rehacks the clock). It’s a bit gray on where the line is between “visiting” and still collecting BAH vs. semi-permanently living there (i.e. there every day except the 1-3 day trips every 90 days). Sounds like you’re wanting to do max time living in Korea for family, which means you need to do OHA vs. BAH. You will get a place on your own (plenty of apartment options right off base for both Osan and Kunsan). OHA is meant to cover rent and most utilities, so you shouldn’t really be out of pocket on this. Medical care is nearly non existent at Kunsan for family, Osan is “full up.” I wouldn’t worry about emergency care, but normal doc visits, kids have X condition, etc. are definitely things to consider, especially if going to Kunsan. I know plenty of people over the years who took dogs. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to book a pet spot on the rotator, but that’d be my first choice if you can. Secondary option is get dog over there yourself via normal airlines. This can be a massive pain in the ass, but doable. Watch out on time of year, they won’t fly an animal if temps are over something in the low 80s. Basically, a total crapshoot in the summer. It’s also not cheap, and there are crate size limits. You’ll have to talk to the cargo section at airlines to figure that out...hopefully you can avoid that by doing the rotator. Lastly, I wouldn’t say a remote to Korea saves you from a 365 to Buttfuckistan. I trust the AD as far as I can throw them...which is 0.069”. So, personally I don’t know if I’d ever take a “bad deal now” in hopes it will save you from a “bad deal later.” Korea won’t be too bad (and way better than the desert 365), but I know I’d be real pissed if I volunteered for that, then 4 years later got a “here’s your parting gift as you get ready to retire in 380 days.”

The day after that goes into effect is when it comes to light 98% of the military is gay. Who knew. Of course that’ll piss off all the C-model drivers because their niche is being threatened and now they’ll just be seen as mainstream.

Several years old gouge, but circa 2016 skywarriors was using some power douche DPEs...mil guys hooking left and right. I went to downtown and had a great experience - length and cost of course were right and the instruction/exam was good...they have the right sight picture for mil pilots getting ATPs. Hopefully skywarriors stopped using those DPEs, it worth some further research before you commit to that option.

Doubt it. Who they’re from matters in the sense of that person’s credibility (even if only perceived) gleaned from their position to an extent, but also how well they know you/I think they can accurately write you a LOR that isn’t canned. You don’t need a letter from a general to get interviewed. Review your cover letter and resume...those two things need to be well written and sell you. They are generally the first two things that guys skim; if they don’t catch my attention in a positive way, higher pK your app is tossed to the “relook at later” pile vs. the “give this man an interview!” pile.

We had a few applicants who had great resumes, but were a year+ out...they didn’t get interviews. Probably would have had they been on a closer timeline. Yes it takes time to hire and get a guy to UPT, but the sooner we can get the guy sworn into the guard, the faster the paperwork trail flows. Not saying that’s THE reason for you, but it certainly is a big factor. Remember, you’re competing against many qualified candidates who are ready tomorrow.

1) Don’t focus on the negative. Certainly be prepared to answer the question about GPA, but don’t keep circling back to that point in conversation. Emphasis your strengths. Your sports background, test scores, current job, and continuing pursuit of aviation training shows you’re at least a fairly smart guy and work hard to meet goals. Clearly the GPA does not define your intelligence or ability to work hard and succeed, but it will beg the questions of why (and what’s different about you now?) 2) Visit units before the board if you can. You’re resume sounds great; maybe the GPA puts you on the fence of getting an interview. Visiting prior creates an opportunity to show dudes who you are as a person and that may be all it takes to move you into the interview pile and for them to care even less about your GPA.

The above is pretty good advice/insight. To the OP, What’s your GPA and what major? It may not be as dismal in the grand scheme of things as you think it is.

Why? File on any one of the easy apps/websites. To answer your question sort of (this is an assumption), but my guess is no since it’s a DOD form. The form is meant for baseops folks to take the information and give it to ARTCC so the pilot doesn’t have to...something about being the people person. Never heard of civilians using DOD forms in an unofficial capacity/for something not linked to the DOD.

What if you just start flying with it? If that feels “too scary,” then we also try to keep up a call sign list with the local center...though it’s never completely up to date. In 12 years, multiple MAJCOMs/countries/states, I’ve never seen callsigns go anywhere beyond the local FAA (or equivalent) rep, and half the time it’s just done and nobody at any level cares or says anything. Obviously don’t be an idiot and use a questionable call sign that could be viewed negatively/as offensive.

As with any jet, depends on gross weight, temp, altitude, runway length/condition, departure type, etc. Those factors drive takeoff power setting.

Information on PCS/moves/moving (DITY, TMO, DLA, storage)
brabus replied to SUX's topic in General Discussion
I PCSd with a normal moving company...did everything like a civilian would; all worked out fine with normal receipts. It took some effort to stay on top of moving company and call them out when they tried to pull fast ones, but overall better than any mil move I’ve done simply because I had more control and there was no worry on getting my stuff moved when I wanted to. That said, any charges with a receipt dated prior to your PCS orders date may not be reimbursed. So be careful to not screw that one up. -
Lot of hyperbole and borderline false statements in that article...but sometimes it’s required to get attention from the system unfortunately.

Going for a Guard/Reserve Pilot Slot - Where do I stand?
brabus replied to workingtofly's topic in What Are My Chances?
Either way is fine, though if it’s on there I don’t have to go flipping through your package to find them. I don’t think anyone looks at it negatively if they’re not on there (unless unit specific instructions say otherwise). -
I see no problem with a lot of hours. I may question if your hours do not align with where you should be progression wise (i.e. if you have 4K at a regional but aren’t a captain...why?) In my UPT class we had 4 1k+ guys; two did great and 2 did terrible. The terrible ones were solely due to attitude, not their experience level (which I suppose ironically is what drove their bad attitudes).

Going for a Guard/Reserve Pilot Slot - Where do I stand?
brabus replied to workingtofly's topic in What Are My Chances?
We have to look at 200 of these things - resume (what have you done) and cover letter (who are you/sell yourself) are the first two things looked at. If they’re not good, your app is easily thrown to the side pile. For content, remember we’re pilots who may not know anything about your current profession (if you’re already in the workforce), so keep that in mind when you write...if there’s too much jargon I may just skim over something that’s perhaps a big deal, but I had no idea and treated it as nothing of substance. Besides content, put the effort into grammar, spelling, ensuring you have the right unit in the letter, etc. If I read something that appears a middle schooler wrote/there’s a clear lack of proof reading, I immediately question whether this guy can succeed at the entire commisioning/flight training process. Maybe the two aren’t directly related, but it’s still a bias that will absolutely exist. -
I think his point is more geared towards putting F-15 squadrons in a 3 year conversion status (e.g. not deployable/useful to COCOMs) rather than a capability gap. The F-35 is very capable at AA - the comparative weapon state limfac is one that is being worked. With 9x and the new racks, you get 6x2...so same state as the eagle currently and could be done very soon. Also remember, the 120/9x combo isn’t going to be the only option forever.

Looking pretty good for any type of unit. Put the effort into your cover letter and resume. -
Sure is. Fun airplane to fly.
-
It’s a nice airplane, 180s are awesome.
-
6 of us in our squadron who are into GA. Some guys can’t fathom the thought of flying GA ever again and some of us love it. Flying is awesome, and there’s plenty of fun flying I get enjoyment out of that doesn’t involve blowing shit up and going fast (though I do love that too). To each their own.

Ask your CC to check CMS to see which office, and then see if he’ll call/email them for a personal update. Mine had to do that twice to nicely nudge the app along.
-
Your AFOQT scores and PCSM are not very competitive for fighters. You may be able to grab an interview if you visit the unit once or twice and really connect well with the bros (e.g. your scores become slightly overshadowed by the positive personal interaction they had with you). I think the odds of you getting a fighter interview based solely on your app are not great. Retake the AFOQT to boost your scores if you want to increase your fighter chances.

60 Minutes Segment on 2014 B-1 Friendly Fire in Afghanistan
brabus replied to Danger41's topic in General Discussion
Classic BR move. -
Nothing...but that’s not why we do what we do (which of course I know you know that and aren’t implying otherwise). Of course the irony is not lost on me when some chief who hasn’t fought a second in his life gets a bronze star on his way out of CENTCOM. I had to argue directly to the one star wg/cc at BAF why the JTAC I wrote a MSM for deserves it...official recognition is broke and that was the day that cemented my decision to go Guard (certainly not the only reason, just the 1069th reason).

Sniper SE is digital HD and a much better product. Your OT bros have got to know about this. However, AATC is working on color Litening, which I’ve heard is pretty awesome (yes, some of you can go ahead and laugh...it’s a big deal for us poor CAF guys!)
