If anyone in FL is having a hard time getting out of their leases, PM me. I'm going through absolute hell with Coastal Property Services, inc. based in Tallahassee and am most likely going to have to take them to court to get my security deposit back. I'm pretty well familiar with the SRCA and the applicable FL laws now... If you can believe it, when I first told them (90 days ahead) that I needed to break the lease due to military orders the douche pump property manager's first question was "Well did you volunteer for active duty so you could break the lease?" Yeah dickface, I volunteered so I could get out of your shitbag lease. Asshole. So I finally convince them (with orders, a letter from the Det/CC, and a letter from me) that I really did need to move more than 35 miles away. We agree that I needed to terminate the lease on June 1 and I owed May rent (my EAD was June 9). Then I get a call 45 days after I move out and turn in my keys wondering where my June rent was. I told them it was in my bank account and to chow my hog, they told me that my lease was not terminated and that I owed June rent. Peculiar, I thought, since I was on active duty somewhere else in June. Further investigation showed that our hero (douche rocket manager) didn't remember that I gave him all my personal information and orders in March and hadn't bothered to terminate the lease. Once I got the property owner (FSU administration) involved, it went away, I thought. Wrong. 6 weeks later I got a letter saying I had damaged the apartment (I hadn't) and owed them $200 in addition to my deposit. Fvck that. Too bad for them they only have 30 days to notify me (according to FL law), but our hero had sneakily pre-dated the notification letter. The bummer was that he didn't mail it until August. I'm still waiting for my check, and I hate this company and that douche. If anyone wants to contact him and let him know how much his help he's been in supporting a new officer let me know. I know it's not someone pretending to be a fighter pilot or anything important like that, but if you're bored and want to send a dickhead a nasty-gram, I'll give you his email address. Side note -- if I don't get my money by the end of the month I'm reporting them to FL consumer protection and the BBB (as well as taking them to court). I already mailed a letter to the president of the management company (with courtesy copies to the FSU President, Vice President and several other members of the administration) detailing this asshat's buffoonery and douchebaggery. Any other ideas on how I can get back at this lame excuse of a business? Sorry, just had to vent. Back to lurking.

Short answer: yes. It's nice to have, it looks good, but your career is definitely not limited because of it. Don't believe me? Go look up any WG/CC or GO on af.mil and see how many of them were DG from their commissioning source.

The moral of the story is study what you like. I promise you that if you like engineering you can do just fine (3.3 gpa) in it and still get a pilot slot -- I did. Play the ROTC game, do well at FT, keep your grades up, and get yourself a rated slot. It doesn't matter what you study, if you don't like it you won't do well. Don't be an engineering major because you think it will help you. Don't be a business major because you think it will help you. Be the literature major or whatever it is because you're interested in the material. You're in college, ROTC is an extra curricular, or if you're not in ROTC your major won't really matter. Don't do things just because you think ROTC will like it, that's how you turn into a ROTC-Nazi douche.

I got a pilot slot last year (I graduate in 26 days) and I'm studying EE. Don't switch your major to something you're not interested in. As far as I've been told, it doesn't matter if you're CE, EE, ME, CpE, IE, AE, whateverE, if you're a tech major you can be a scientist and that's what they want. The pilot categorization happens before the non-rated jobs so you'll know in advance. Bottom line: don't change your major unless you're interested in the new subject, because you can be sure that if you're not interested in what you're studying you won't do well. PM me if you have any other questions.

I don't think the writing in the original was much better than its current incarnation, although the gladiators have improved from this tool. https://youtube.com/watch?v=VGDwScgb_Y0 Edited for double post.

Thanks for the help, I forgot to mention the time line. I won't be able to have the surgery until Aug 6 at the earliest because I have a final on Friday the 3rd. Also, am I correct in my understanding that if I don't have it out before I go I won't be "Disqualified" but I'll be "Not qualified" until I have it out?

Hi everyone, I'm going to brooks on Aug 12 for my FC1/MFS for an ROTC pilot slot and I have 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Should I try and get it removed before I go there or plan on being "not qualified" until it's removed afterwards? I have a referral from my dentist to an oral surgeon and I can probably make the appointment before I go, but I doubt I'll be fully healed by then. Thanks for the help.

Or just don't be stupid about it. If you're underage and drinking don't photo document the experience, and definitely don't put those photos online. If you're drinking in your dorm, don't be loud. I was written up plenty my freshman year in the dorms (mostly for "visitation violations"), I'm not sure how it works where ever you're going to school but they didn't report anything to the police, so I never thought much of it. IIRC they just made kids write letters home to mom and dad and threatened to evict them. I know a couple of the letters were sent out, but I never saw anyone get the boot from the dorms. I asked the cadre about it when it happened and they said if I wasn't involved with the police, they don't need to document it on the bad-kid form. Just tell the cadre you got written up by the dorm, and ask them if you need to fill out any paper work. I never had to.

Don't worry though, they made sure to issue all the ROTC kids PT gear. But GMC aren't allowed to have it, they haven't "earned it" yet. [ 11. January 2007, 06:38: Message edited by: FSUBadger ]

Classic Thread - CSAF congratulates CAP cadet
Slander replied to HerkDerka's topic in General Discussion
They do...not as many as the AF does, but a pretty good amount. Oh, I meant to say that there are a lot of d-bag seniors who think that they're in the AF, they suck, but there are also a lot of good dudes. CAP Regs Edited to include address for CAP regs [ 15. Classic Thread - CSAF congratulates CAP cadet
Slander replied to HerkDerka's topic in General Discussion
I know it got deleted but I spent a lot of time on it so Toro or whoever can delete it if they want... Saying that there are better things to do than be in CAP is ridiculous. Nerdy...yes. Do I make fun of CAP cadets even though I was one for a long time? Absolutely. CAP can be a really good thing for kids: there are a lot of avenues they can be interested in Air Force (or other services) stuff. The Generalissimo ribbon stacks that cadets get may be retarded, but so is getting 690 merit badges as a boyscout. Generally speaking, CAP is little more than USAF sponsored boyscouts...with less camping and more saluting. There are going to be socket wrenches in every organization, but starting a flame war about whether it's a good use of time is not the point. FWIW, only about 1300 kids have gotten the Spaatz award since it was created in the 60's or 70's, so even the CAP regs recommend that a GO or elected official present it. I think it's cool that the CSAF is paying attention to CAP, he gives money from his budget (albeit not very much) to them each year, so why not check it out and give a photo op for their newspaper? All I'm saying is don't assume that CAP is some SNAP factory that is producing the leaders of the AF. There are dorks in CAP and there are some pretty good dudes in there too. I don't know anything about how AD works, but I do know that that 16 year old girl has a kickass story about how the CSAF gave her an award she undoubtedly worked pretty hard for (it's more than taking a couple tests). If you want to know what it takes to get a Spaatz Award, PM me and I'll send you the regs on it. Rant switch off. Edited to add disclaimer at top. [ 15. The reason everything is so expensive is because Panama City is a spring break destination. You won't find anything for less that about $100/night during spring break. I'd say that if you can stay in the on-base hotel do that, otherwise look in Niceville, FL which isn't too far from Tyndall, and may be cheaper. Good luck though, they love bilking tourists around there, it's not called the Redneck Riviera for nothing!

I wanted to answer your question about why choose ROTC rather than go to the zoo. I thought long and hard about applying to the academy, and ended up not doing so because I wanted to do the ROTC thing. I decided to do this because I looked at college as a huge growing experience and living under strict military rules (while not a bad thing) wouldn't give me the experience I wanted. I too want desperately to be a pilot, but it is not impossible to attain that goal from where I am. Actually, I think it's easier to get a pilot slot from ROTC than from the Academy only because my life is not as unpleasantly governed by military rule and order. I am in a fraternity, I hang out with sorority girls, I have friends in ROTC and out, and I think I've grown a lot as a person by having a broader friend base than making all my friends in the zoo. I have a ton of respect for guys and girls at the zoo, but I just wanted to have a more relaxed and enjoyable college career. If you want to be uber-involved in ROTC and treat it as seriously as the Academy, there are guys who do that. But that level of participation is not required to get a pilot slot, and once you show up at UPT no one cares about what you did in ROTC or at the zoo, you're all LT's. Give ROTC a chance, your career won't be held back by being a ROTC Nazi, Gen Jumper is an ROTC grad. (I know, he went to VMI.) Just my $0.02

From what I understand they generally announce the number of slots at the Commander's Call in the fall. That's when they tell all of the PAS when Big Week is (the week of categorization) and how many pilot, nav, and ABM slots there are. This year I think it was around 535 for ROTC. Ask your cadre for specifics, they'll know for sure. But I wouldn't expect to know how many drivers they'll need for FY07 until October of 2006. [ 10. I think a lot of you are missing the point. Engineering is a very difficult major, and if you're not prepared to work hard, then don't pick it for the money. Because you never see the money (at least I don't) the classes just sort of get paid for, it won't feel like you're working hard for the same money a lot of your counterparts get for learning when people were born. That being said, if you don't like math, you won't like engineering. If you don't think about things technically you won't like engineering. Why worry about being in COLLEGE a 5th year? Once you're a completed cadet you don't have to do anything but show up to PT twice a week. Yeah, that would suck, but it's 2 hours a week. I'm active in my fraternity, drink 3-4 nights a week and still maintain a 3.5 GPA in electrical engineering. As long as you know when it's time to buckle down and learn your s*it engineering is doable. Also, don't be afraid to ask your professors for help in or outside of office hours. Just my $0.02
