  1. Most of the time it's the fault of the Army. I heard a story a few years back about how in a certain southern country there was a group of Army guys who took their host nation leader's daughter (unknowing that their intended Rufiecolada was for that level of piece of ace) out and were trying to get her drunk beyond tolerances. Turned into a big deal and subsequently provided the ammunition to disallow alcohol consumption by any US military member. Standing by pro-Army retalitaion (I ain't skeered)...
  2. You already paid taxes on that money when you got it. If it doesn't draw any interest, it doesn't count as income
  3. You plan on keeping it long enough to gain substantial interest? Finance Guy would be the one to answer this best, I guess, but at first glance, I would think that the tax penalties would be overshadowed exponentially by the $300 tax exemption fee. Even at a great interest rate, you'd have to deposit a substantial amount of bank to start to worry about the tax ramifications of having an account.
  4. So what are the negative repercussions for the service member? Any affect on VA eligibility? I'm sure that there's no way that this is truly a "good deal" for those who are upside-down and getting the boot from their current duty station.
  5. Just got back from bringing the 23 STS to and from Tacoma and the funeral (should have been CH on the trip: sorry Boss). The whole squadron stood in the cold drizzle for about 2 hours to send him off. One of those events that recages the ole "duty gyro". The crew I was on on my first deployment in the gunpig killed the IED maker responsible for killing Adam Servais back in '06. Gave his family the actual brass from the shot that turned the HVT into a pink mist. Hopefully we can honor Davis' memory in the same manner. , Tim.
  6. Sweet Jesus! It's like looking at Voltron and all of the parts separated standing next to each other...
  7. Nobody cares about the guy in the bubble And if I had a nickle for every time I waited on a Talon to get the hell out of the way so I could depart, I'd have about $69 by now...
  8. That's not said bottle of bourbon we gave you for your Change of Command is it? B/c that's a LOT of booze! Wish more of our guys read this board...
  9. Come fly gunships. That way you get to fly heavies AND blow shit up! (We also fly slicks). God I love living in the gray area! [ 11. September 2006, 18:32: Message edited by: war007afa ]
  10. In terms of having to take a test really quickly, the Gleim books are the same as an MQF. It's pretty good to study, but not much for actually learning the material. But ask 200 people, you'll probably get 200 answers as to which is best. Gleim is the actual written test questions taken from a bank, IIRC.
  11. Or you could just take leave...not like you're going to get to do it that much for the next year of your life while you're in training anyway...
  12. A good kneeboard goes a looooong way!
  13. 1) Remember that there's nothing that you can do to a Tweet that hasn't been done to it before at least once in its lifetime. 2) If you can't learn it by 0200, it can't be learned and probably isn't worth the trouble. Good luck.
  14. You may also be elligible for family separation allowance, which is another $250/month if you are gone a long enough duration.
  15. Send Gearhead my regards...
  16. " As to ID'ing targets, we for sure do that. We may not always be able to get a good eyes on the target with the ol' MK-1 eyeball but we never release ordinance without positive target identification." How can you say that you ID targets when you have no means, other than a beacon, to identify friendly targets? You can't see GLINT, you can't see sparkle. I know how "good" the radar is, but if the dudes on the ground don't have a beacon, then what? The definition of TIC is 1 km, and even JFIRE says you guys are to drop on STATIONARY targets. If you start getting squirters, what do you do then? As for the danger-close comment for a 2000 lb JDAM, since JFIRE publishes the mins and defines it as a "fire and forget" weapon, I'd venture to guess that any time they ask for JDAM in a TIC situation, you're going to hear "danger close", especially with the distance given. 17. I live in Navarre and it only takes about 25 to 30 minutes to drive up 87 to get to Whiting (if for some reason you'd actually WANT to go to Whiting :D )
  18. Double check Virginia's rules, though. I've heard nothing but bad things about the state's take on taxes and exemptions. Also, if you want to claim a homestead exemption in FL (if you buy a house), you have to have DL, tags for all of your vehicles, and voter registration.
  19. Coasties send their fixed-winger guys through Navy training for aviation. We had about one a class or so down in CRP when I was there.
  20. Nah....just take the fam to the "original" McGuires (pick me up some of their micro while you're there! I know where you live lol!)
  21. Got my VA loan on my house down here at HRT. I payed $235k for my house and my mortgage is only 1500/month (including my escrow payments and hazard/hurricane insurance). I get 1359 or so for my BAH. I'm not hurting too badly at all down here. I guess it's pretty much location dependent.
  22. Won't be able to. 3 yr waiting list for officers.
  23. There are a few apartments out by Cypress Lake, as well. Not too expensive and a nice place to live if you can handle the skeeters...
  24. Don't live on any apt on Airline Dr. Best apartments/townhouses are in Shreveport in the Broadmore area (near Target, Best Buy, etc). Grew up in Haughton. Casual at Bark-atraz. Family still lives there. If you have probs finding a place to stay, PM and I'll see if my folks have any room.
