Favorite line: "Those guys are all out of ideas. All they do now is recycle shit from the past, and hope people won't notice"

Saw it last night. Silly, but pretty funny.

"Frame of choice" is a program where, when you see the optometrist for prescription glasses, they have a rack of different styles on the wall for you to choose from, of which the Randolph aviators are one (along with about 20 other styles). The "Frame of Choice" styles are different from the "flight frames" the optometrist issues you- two each of regular glasses and prescription sunglasses that are all the Improved Aircrew Spectacle. As for where to buy Randolphs, they used to sell them at mil clothing sales for around $30, but I don't know if that's still the case.
-
Yeah, I don't think the Randolph's are technically authorized anymore. You're supposed to wear the "improved aircrew spectacle" or whatever the hell they call them, even though I don't know anyone that actually does, aside from during UCI, etc. +2 on the Serengetti's, really nice contrast.

According to a behind-the-scenes video on the movie's web site, the scene with the boats on the river involved firing several thousand rounds of live ammunition and filming the resulting destruction. Bad-ass.

1st female Air Force combat vet in run for congress
JeepGuyC17 replied to F-15E WSO's topic in Squadron Bar
She seriously has a Colonel bird front-and-center on her campaign logo? Not terribly subtle... -
Exactly. Having been a Sq exec (not by choice), I can say that with the constant busy-work, if I had been the only squadron exec I would literally never have had the chance to take leave, fly locals, go on trips, upgrade, etc. If you leave the desk unmanned and an OPR goes late or a tasker falls through the cracks, the Boss ends up catching shit from above.

Electronic flight bags could boost operational safety, effectiveness
JeepGuyC17 replied to ClearedHot's topic in Squadron Bar
Kind of what I was getting at. If I were a fighter/tac guy flying in situations where NVGs were a necessity rather than an SA enhancement tool, I would not want this, but I would gladly prefer it to having to lug around every single page of FLIP for the entire world. -

Take the goggles off? I would imagine you would still need to carry a paper copy of the Dash 1 just in case, but most C-17 crews already use an LCD-screened Toughbook as the primary in-cockpit reference for the Dash 1 and AFIs with little difficulty, NVGs or not. Since tablets use the same type of LCD screen as the laptop and many cockpit instruments rather than an incandescent bulb, they should be NVG compatible if the screen can be made dim enough. -

E-ink readers like the kindle in their current form are not ideal for viewing afis and tech orders. The screens are too small to display a full size pdf at a readable size, and the slow processor and refresh rate make searching for text cumbersome. A full-on tablet offers a much better experience. -

I'm hiding out in AETC. Maybe the war will be over when I go back to the jet in 4 years.

What they're really saying is that they "feel safer" knowing that the only people around them likely to be carrying a gun are the insane nut-jobs that intend to kill someone.
-
Most high profile shootings occur in "gun free zones", from Columbine to Fort Hood, to VTx2. At least they let the anti-gun crowd "feel safer" at these places...

Bump: Has anyone had any experience with putting together an X-33 order recently? Does Omega still do this?

So I just got a "lessons learned" email from a security incident where somebody left classified unsecured on a jet. The conclusion was that "The incident occurred due to failure to comply with established safeguarding procedures" and the recommended solution was that... wait for it... "Additional safeguards be created and implemented within the organization." Yeah, sounds good. People aren't following established procedures, so lets invent even more processes and procedures. Similarly, it was determined that since people can't follow established dash-one procedures and reset the EFCS during the before taxi checklist to prevent taking off in mechanical mode, the obvious solution was to duplicate the exact same checklist step in the lineup checklist. WTF

Your mileage may vary, but over the long term in the C-17, I've been tdy about 550 days in 3.5 years, including 460 overseas. there are busy times and slow times. The deployments are relatively short at 4 months unless you get tagged for caoc or mc-12, but the trips are frequent, short notice, and unpredictable.

Some interesting info straight from the SOC commandant: -When the 8 week course starts in January, the intent will be 100% opportunity to attend; class sizes will be increased to ~800 to accomodate -The correspondence course will still be available for people who can't go in-res in their window due to medical profile, deployments, etc. -He agrees that the current correspondence course could be a lot better, and said that the intent was never for the correspondence course to be the de facto prerequisite that it has become. -He's pushing to get the correspondence course scrapped and replaced with a real, facilitated class with an instructor, similar to online master's classes. If he has any say in the matter, he would implement it in a way that taking the new correspondence course would make you ineligible to go in-residence, getting rid of the current norm of doing correspondence just to get an in-res slot. -I don't know if this varies from board to board, but from his experience serving on major's boards, the only difference between having SOS in residence or in correspondence is that in-res gives you the opportunity to get DG. Otherwise, checking the box is checking the box as far as the board's concerned, as long as you have your PME done.

?s on ADSC (Active Duty Service Commitment)
JeepGuyC17 replied to FreudianSlip's topic in General Discussion
Thread bump and ADSC question. What happens if I go from a C-17 assignment to a UPT assignment then back to the C-17 and the requalification ADSC will go past my original ADSC? There's a note in the AFI that advanced flying training ADSCs will not extend beyond 10 years of flying unless you are crosstraining to a different rated career field or airframe, but is requalification in your primary MWS after a white jet assignment considered switching to a different airframe? -
Absolutely amazing. "Nine years, seven months, and twenty days after September 11th, an American was a trigger pull from ending bin Laden’s life. The first round, a 5.56-mm. bullet, struck bin Laden in the chest. As he fell backward, the SEAL fired a second round into his head, just above his left eye. On his radio, he reported, “For God and country—Geronimo, Geronimo, Geronimo.” After a pause, he added, “Geronimo E.K.I.A.”—“enemy killed in action.”

It seems George Lucas is no longer content to ruin my childhood memories of his own past movies, now he has to do it to other peoples' films as well.

I did notice that you can wear ABU boonie hat or patrol cap with the DFDU now. I knew a flying crew chief on my last deployment who was always taking shit from the local shoes about his ABU boonie hat.

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, couldn't find anything with search, but does anybody have any experience with a good property manager in the Charleston SC area?

Best out-of-context quote from the article: "I recently had the pleasure of experiencing an officer, who was leaning on a truck"
