  1. I guess "Pilot exercises sound judgement" just doesn't make for a catchy enough headline. The media is clueless.
  2. The gayest thing of all is that this also applies to sims. Fucking sims.
  3. Not that i give a shit, but the motto does kind of suck. Oh well, back to work... flying
  4. I can see it now: Return from mission at 0300, squadron PT at 0730 for anyone not in crew rest- sleep cycle be damned!
  5. So no "special alone time" when Midnight Hot comes on, eh?
  6. I'd actually prefer conex housing units to the billeting at the Deid. Although, being there for a year you'll probably get to live in the "Better Person's Complex"
  7. Good to know, especially since ATT's selection of subsidized Android phones just plain SUCKS. I guess it all depends on what kind of signal bands your phone supports.
  8. The only two GSM carriers in the US are ATT and T Mobile. GSM is the phone standard that uses SIM cards and is what most of the world uses. A quad-band GSM phone will get signal almost anywhere. AT&T seems to work pretty well overseas even though their domestic network sucks. Even without the international plan, you can receive texts for free if your domestic plan includes unlimited texting, and they are only 50 cents to send. It's a great way for people to contact me if they need to when I'm out God knows where without e-mail access. I can't vouch for T Mobile working well overseas, but my wife has it and I seems to get signal in a lot more countries than she does when we travel. By the way, I would highly recommend any of the current generation of Android phones that have come out since January or so. I have a Nexus One and love it. Great alternative to iPhone if you're not a fan of the Apple walled garden. I bought my phone unlocked directly from Google so that AT&T can't try to charge me for the tethering/wifi hot spot feature when Android 2.2 is released.
  9. AMC '17s are hella busy right now, but the mission is great and you make a shit ton of money. I haven't owed taxes since 2007. My advice, OPS tempo changes all the time and could be totally different by the time you finish UPT and FTU, so take that for what it's worth when you make your choice. When we filled out our dream sheets, the word on the street from the C-17 world was still "you can fly as much or as little as you want to, copilots sometimes have to fight to get on trips". We all know how that's been working out lately, not that I would have chosen differently.
  10. Attention Airmen: The CJCS is probably not the person to bitch to when the base education office denies your TA application for your underwater basket weaving class. I know he opened the floor for questions, but seriously, WTF?
  11. I freaking love Manas, especially with the fast internet in the dorm rooms now. It was a little weird last time I was there though, what with all the civilians and little kids running around the place.
  12. Happy 100!
  13. Currently wearing Ray Ban predators off the jet and Serengeti Vedi for flying. The Ray Ban's stand up pretty well to abuse with their plastic frames and glass lenses, and Serengeti lenses are the shit to fly with.
  14. Flew with her recently as well, +2 on her being really down to earth and easygoing. She actually recognized me from when I met her once when I was casual at MacDill 5 years ago.
  15. It's not a military web site, it's a site for military aviation enthusiasts, some of whom happen to be in the military.
  16. I have an LED surefire that I'm pretty happy with. 12 hours of battery life vs the 1 hour incandescent version, and brighter than a D-cell mag light.
  17. "said 2nd Lt. Justin Mason, the AFUO strategic planning project lead" Isn't there a snack bar somewhere that needs stocking?
  18. MNPS manual has specific instructions for contingencies while in MNPS airspace like what to do if you have to deviate for weather, can't maintain altitude, or have to turn around on the track. Good to review that stuff before every crossing. The AP2 also has some info extracted from the MNPS, like specific country procedures for obtaining your oceanic clearance. My condolences on not having SELCAL, by the way.
  19. True. If they block Skype it will defeat half the purpose. I'd be fine if they at least throttled the WOW servers a bit though.
  20. Any word on whether they are thinking about prorating CZTE as well?
  21. There have been a few changes at the Deid over the last couple years. There's a new chow hall in the CC that's a lot nicer than the old one (it's an actual building as opposed to a large trailer situated over an open sewer pit). The Wi fi has been expanded, you can even pick it up in the transient tents now, but the quality of the connection varies. Don't know about picking it up in the trailers, it seems like you might need to string an external USB antenna outside your window for that to happen. Then, of course there's the lack of beer, but how long that will last is really anyone's guess.
  22. From the press release it doesn't sound like they plan to sue anyone for money, all it says is "we plan to take strong action to stop the ad containing this music". Since the AFR has already pulled the add, I would think the issue would be pretty much settled. On a related note, I think White had a cameo as Elvis in "Walk Hard".
  23. Or a password that must be changed every month and contain 6-9 special characters.
  24. I wouldn't count on the "at most one 10-day trip a month" thing. Might have been that way a couple years ago, but we've been flying our asses off out here this past year or so, new copilots especially since they don't have real jobs or upgrades to worry about.
  25. Since when has unsound logic stopped the AF from making bad decisions?
