  1. All morality is subjective. Most of us would agree that killing people is wrong, as a general rule...and yet we all joined the military, where our primary job is to kill people. Just because there are things that most people agree on across the world as "wrong" doesn't make them any less subjective.
  2. Why didn't heterosexual marriage open the door for these things? Inter-racial marriage? Why is gay marriage your line in the sand where society will collapse? The research seems to weigh much more heavily on the side of it being in-born, not a choice. Tell me Lloyd...what age did you decide to be straight?
  3. So we've now sunk to the level of comparing gays to the mentally handicapped. Awesome. As for physically handicapped...wasn't the a whole thread praising the female senator who reemed out a supposedly "disabled" vet? The woman lost both legs in a helo crash, yet still serves as a LtCol in the reserves (guard? doesn't make a difference to the point). And when we recognize animals as having all the same legal rights to enter contracts as humans, maybe then I'll take your beastiality argument seriously.
  4. Can't wait. I'd rather deal with the problems than just say "we're going to deny rights to this entire group, because it's more convenient".
  5. Well, maybe the Christianity portion. I'm pretty sure we've shown that the Judaism portion of your argument is pretty weak if you are trying to argue against polygamy. It is interesting how many people use the bible to justify whatever stance they have, but ignore all the verses that impose other restrictions. Sometimes the religious apologists try to tell us that it's because the Old Testament rules don't apply, since Jesus took care of it for us (nevermind that Jesus said not one letter would be removed from the law), yet even these people who point to Paul's admonition against gays ignore the commands that women must cover their heads and be silent in church.
  6. I'm not sure how the two are even that separate. And usually, I don't see people saying "animals do it, so people should to". Usually, it is a response to the anti-gay argument that "it isn't natural". Clearly, it is natural. Calling people out for their prejudices is now narrow minded? Fine. I'm narrow minded. Doesn't change the fact that a growing body of evidence now points to the conclusion that homosexuality is in-born...just like race. I suppose we could tell them all they have to be celibate for their entire lives. Seems a little unfair to me. You can hold on to that idea if you want, but you are probably not going to win any new legal battles, and in 20 years, you're going to look just as silly as grandpa looked when he condemned inter-racial couples.
  7. That only improves the property values when it comes time to sell the house.
  8. I'm still low on the totem pole, but is the 11F "shortage" driven by staff requirements, while the 11H/11S don't have the same staff requirements? If the 11H/11S have enough guys to keep the squadrons running, with a minimum of staff requirements, that could be part of the reason big blue thinks we need more 11Fs.
  9. The only way to solve the staff problem is to get more guys into the squadrons, so that you have more people to send to staff.
  10. Just like grandad had the right to be offended and disgusted by integration, right?
  11. Judaism has a long series of valid marriages, but man-man isn't among them. I'll let Betty Bowers explain what "biblical" marriage meant to the Jews prior to Jesus: So, man and wife, man and wife and wife's sister, man and wife and man's brother's wife, man and wife and any females he can grab from a conquered country...lots of options there.
  12. What was stopping a male and female airman from doing this already? What stops people from marrying the first person they see outside the gate to get out of the dorms?
  13. Bingo. Minot has a particularly large problem with SF guys who signed up to go fight the enemy, on enemy turf, only to end up standing on top of a hole in the ground in sub-zero weather for twelve hours at a time. Feeling like your job is worthless or meaningless tends to suck the motivation (and, in some circumstances, the will to live) right out of you.
  14. Because that's what happened when we struck down racial barriers to marriage. Hey, maybe we'll get to that point if those demographics can muster enough support. One fight at a time.
  15. Unless they are committing a sexual act in front of you, or they tell you outright, I don't think you have enough data to tell anyone's sexual orientation, including the finance troop who inspired this post.
  16. Sorry you feel that way. I'm pretty sure most of us see the gap between "I don't think women should be crammed into foxholes with a guy" and "I don't think any women should be allowed on the base".
  17. Right now, the repeal of DOMA doesn't guarantee the federal government must provide you with the means to be married, it only provides federal benefits once you are legally married. Would it work if someone has a gay marriage and moves to a state where gay marriage is specifically prohibited? I would guess this will be another court case in the near future. The difference for other marriage licenses is there is not a state in the union that won't recognize a heterosexual couple.
  18. Yes.
  19. I don't know the answer, but my question was pretty similar...can a chaplain be forced to marry people in the eyes of God who would not meet the requirements of his faith? I'm pretty sure that's what you are asking. So, can a Jewish chaplain be forced to marry a Catholic couple? Can a Catholic chaplain be forced to marry an atheist couple? I don't know. I don't even know what reg you would look that up in. I know what my common sense answer would be, but we both know how often the USAF uses common sense when arriving at a decision.
  20. Sort of like when we integrated blacks into the service. Gays have been allowed for a while. If that bothers you so very much, you should probably get out. I'm not sure where you're going to find a major civilian company that bans gays either though. I guess the Westboro guys may be hiring...
  21. Chaplains don't all have the same belief systems, and I'm pretty sure marriages are an optional deal, not a mandatory one. What if an atheist wanted to marry a Lutheran? Can they force a Catholic chaplain to do it even though it goes against the church rules? Why is this any different? I've often wondered how the military paying chaplains passes the separation of church and state test...but they are the ONLY people on the entire base who can give you 100% confidentiality, so I think they are earning their keep. Really? You're saying the next step is benefits for unmarried couples? Good luck. I also doubt most military members will be able to pull off the "common law" marriage, since it's unlikely they'll live with their partner in the same state for the required amount of time before a PCS.
  22. For the same reason it doesn't happen on college campuses, and the same reason there are different restrooms.
  23. I don't know...how do colleges manage it? Day man is correct...you're both adults. Get over it, and if he's creeping you out with comments about how you should hook up, then ask to change rooms. It's not like you're going to catch "gay" from sleeping in the same room.
  24. So the part of GO-1B that prohibits pets has been rescinded, then?
  25. I guess we'll see if the government commits to that level or not. Penn Jillette talks a lot about how he got married, not because he and his wife really believe in marriage, but because his lawyers told him there was no set of contracts they could draft that would offer the same protections for the surviving spouse and the kids as marriage. Any other contract has the potential to be the subject of lawsuits and legal battles for custody of the kids, but with a marriage, custody is automatically awarded to the surviving spouse.
