  1. Not quite the same thing. So if the couple has kids, then the military member dies on duty...who gets to decide custody of the kids in a state without gay marriage? The courts? Or does the federal protection of marriage extend to the spouse of the deceased? I know you are on-board with eliminating marriage altogether. I'm not entirely opposed to the idea myself. But right now, there are significant legal protections and benefits that marriage brings to the couple, and it will be interesting to see what happens when a couple that is legally married, then forced to move by military orders, now loses those protections in a new state. Do you need a new will for every move? How much extra paperwork does it now take to get your legally-bound spouse's name on the deed to your newly purchased house? Will the school recognize both parents as "parents", the way they do for married heterosexual couples, or will only one person be the "primary" parent and the other is SOL if the kid gets hurt or in trouble at school and has to come home early?
  2. https://www.cnn.com/2....html?hpt=hp_t1 So, does this mean the military will start recognizing same-sex spouses as dependents? Or only if they are married in a state where same-sex marriage is legal? How do you suppose this will work when the sponsor gets a PCS to somewhere that still bans gay marriage, such as Texas?
  3. Fair point, but interesting that many here have so many complaints when a chief calls them out for rolling up sleeves or wearing a moral patch become such proponents of the uniform reg for others. Agree that this guy needs to either shave or get a waiver, and the nail polish needs to go. My point was on a larger scale...I really don't care about someone's orientation or speech patterns if they are competent and get their job done.
  4. Or if not promotion rates, at least RIF boards.
  5. Honestly, I'll take competence and nail polish over a Vin Deisel clone who can't find my travel voucher any day.
  6. There's a pretty big gap between "I don't believe women should be in combat roles" and "I don't believe women should be in the military, period".
  7. Bingo. Under the rules of DADT, it wasn't just telling people you were gay that would cause problems. Let someone in the military see you downtown, off-duty, in civies, holding hands with a same-sex partner, and that person is obligated to report it. Put a picture of your same-sex partner on your desk they way your colleagues put up pictures of their wives, and you're subject to investigation. What people keep missing is that DADT didn't prevent gay people from serving, it just made their lives fucking miserable while they were in.
  8. Exactly. If I had to guess, that was the focus of the interview because, surprise, this guy is gay and that's the question the reporters asked.
  9. Not just us...this MTI lost a stripe for staying late and using curse words when yelling at the recruits. https://www.armytimes.com/print/article/20130617/NEWS06/306170004/Blue-rope-loses-stripe-minor-offenses
  10. Still have plenty of guys to non-vol into RPAs. I'm sure they think it's fine.
  11. When has arming a group of religiously motivated rebels in the Middle East ever backfired for the US?
  12. Well, then I took it wrong. Because I've had people tell me it's a choice before, and usually they are implying that I'm choosing not to get promoted if I put the family above the Air Force when it comes to queep. Maybe you managed to get a stellar MBA from Harvard while deploying, going TDY, and keeping the kids well-entertained. If so, I wish I knew the secret. I did what the Air Force asked of me, in the way that required the least amount of sacrifice for the family.
  13. 40-hour work week? Must be in the FSS.
  14. Well, maybe we can RIF fewer people in the next round, so we can save money by not hiring them back with huge bonuses a year later.
  15. I'm not sure we would have won WWII missing over half of the total troop strength.
  16. I'm not getting into a dick-measuring contest about who has the higher opstempo. My point was that this advice: Is complete bullshit to guys (like all of us, I assume) who are already away from home all the time for deployments, TDYs, and exercises. I didn't have a choice to delay kids to do my master's...my kid was already born when I joined. The idea that we should take leave to complete a de facto requisite that isn't in any official guidance is asinine. My point wasn't to make every go "Aw, wook at the poor wittle Bone guys, they have it so rough". My point was, I don't think Slackline's advice is all that applicable. "Family is a choice" boiled down, to me, "Tell your family to fuck off, the Air Force matters more". I wish him luck with that line of thought, but I plan to keep my current family until well after I'm done with the Air Force. I've seen plenty of guys who prioritized work over family. They're usually the guys with alimony payments who hang out in the squadron bar until midnight every night, trying to tell anyone who walks past the door war stories. No thanks, I'll just take my shitty check the box master's now and look for a real one when I get out and/or get that sweet staff job where I'm home every night.
  17. Much as I love a good action sequence...they spent the first 2/3s of the movie showing how important saving people is to Superman's personality, and the last third showing Superman's epic fight scene destroying an entire city without much emotional turmoil or hesitation.
  18. Yes, our six-month rotations every year, with 3-4 13+ hour flights a week, or 12-hour days on ground duty. I'm sure you have it so much worse. Boo hoo.
  19. Ah. Just tell the family to fuck off for a couple years while you get the AAD. Perfect. Thanks for your words of wisdom.
  20. So where does a flyer find time to do a worthwhile master's degree between multiple TDYs, deployments, ORE/ORIs, and last-minute schedule changes? Once you are a major select. Lord help you if you're one of the 25% who doesn't have an AAD and gets passed over.
  21. Well, the insurgents are standing down that day after a rash of complaints from the goats and camels, so it's a win-win. We'll go back to fighting the war the first week of July.
  22. Ours is planned for a full day too, and we had to cancel all flying and sims (couldn't even get the two hour block to get the EPEs done). The WG/CC, OG/CC, and SQ/CC are all going to talk to us, followed by the SARC...I think. Haven't seen the schedule yet. But it is planned for a full day, and as I said, they still couldn't get the required annual training into that day, so we'll do that the following week. I'm sure this will definitely be the step that prevents all future sexual harassment and sexual assault.
  23. Yup. And apparently, despite setting aside the entire day, it still won't fulfill the annual training requirement.
  24. That's what we're doing. Several attached flyers are now unqualified, but we've managed to stay ahead on checkrides within the squadron. The real fun will be spinning up 15 MQTs before the next deployment.
  25. Well, when the selection rates are really high, then sometimes you can get through without the AAD. I'm guessing you got one before O-5, though.
