ACSC complete, only negative indicator is that I've never left the community to do staff, never did instructor duty at PCola, never went ALO, and I didn't DG from SOS. I even did a Master's, before they were masked on the board.
No LORs, no failed PT tests, no Q-2 or Q-3 check rides.
"Combat medals, only man to shoot down 3 enemy aircraft in 40 years, yet you can't get a promotion"...sounds like the Navy has about as much use for combat experience as the Air Force when it comes to promotion boards.
We've got a couple from the B-1 community that volunteered. They were excited to be picked up for the program. From the breakout, I would guess they'd promote in the same category as 11X, 12X and 13L.
We've got our fair share of Iron Majors in the B-1. I'd say 95% are highly respected instructors, with years of experience. Almost all are in the same boat as me...too valuable to let out of the community, not valuable enough to promote. Almost every Lt Col in our community is someone who left the community in one capacity or another. Maybe I should have volunteered for an ALO slot instead of notching it.
Not much I could have done to increase the number of IPZ. If the WG/CC had enough officers IPZ to give #1 a DP before the MLR, maybe I would have got one at the MLR. Hard to say.
One was my 2017 OPR, one was 2018 OPR. I guess that means I can give up all hope of APZ, because I'm not going to go back in time to get CGO or Maj strats from those years.
Back to work on Monday. I've got nothing to hide, especially if it helps others avoid my fate.
I don't know if they're just pretending to care or if they actually care, but I have more leadership calling and texting me about my career now that I've been passed over than I ever did leading into my 2 BPZ/1 BPZ/IPZ boards. Maybe if they'd shown that level of care and interest in my plans, my next duty title, next assignment a couple years ago, I'd be a Lt Col select now.
This is something I'll never understand. If 85% get a MAJCOM push, and we're promoting 75% of folks, how can it be seen as such a negative sign by the board? Surely the guys in that top 15% got a DP and a school slot, right?
I've tried to move up to other levels. I was told I was too critical to PCS to a non-flying job.
I am currently in a wing staff job, but clearly that didn't help.
Because I didn't have a different strat to put there. I'll post it when I'm back from leave, but I had the standard C format with strats straight down the left side. I didn't have enough captain/CGO strats to put one on every line.
Now, if there was guidance about which ones could and couldn't be used, I never got it, and the WG/CC never said anything about it. If that turns out to be the case, I'll be even more pissed, because I had other bullets that could have gone there even if they weren't strats.
I agree. My WG/CC agreed too. But it is what it is, and I can't go back in time and get those strats now.
I can't really tell if it was a lack of knowledge, or if it was a result of the standard "the Air Force sucks at feedback". Who knows, maybe I got a #2/23 shop chiefs because the WG/CC didn't want to write #37/60 captains. Maybe all the supervisors and commanders who told me I was doing a great job just didn't want to deliver bad news face to face.
I usually see that one on group and wing leadership in my community. If you already know the squadron, get their colors. You might call ahead and see if they already have tags for you... The B-1 FTU orders the blue and white ones for our students.
After commissioning and before getting wings, I had a black leather one with the Air Force emblem where the wings normally go.
No matter what kind of plane you fly, or what kind of job you have...you'll be going to work pretty much every weekday, with a few weekends sprinkled in.
Bingo. I knew a guy who was selected to teach ACSC for three years. But because he wasn't a school select, they wouldn't give him in-residence credit for the year he did ACSC in order to prep him for the job of teaching the class.
Counter-arguement - there are a LOT more people who get picked up for IDE in residence than get picked up for an FAO Fellowship.
