  1. Letters to the board must be written by the member being considered for promotion. However, they can include a letter you write as an attachment to their letter to the board if they choose to write one. Mypers has a a pretty good section about what is/is not allowed on this subject.
  2. I originally posted this in the military cuts thread, but the tanker clown music overshadowed it. Anybody have insight into this verbiage from the NDAA? Posted Sunday at 8:28 AM From the text: REPORT.—Not later than February 1, 2016, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to the congressional defense committees a report setting forth the empirical case for an increase in special and incentive pay for aviation officers in order to address a specific, statistically-based retention problem with respect to such officers. The report shall include the results of a study, conducted by the Secretary in connection with the case, on a market-based compensa-tion approach to the retention of such officers that considers the pay and allowances offered by commercial airlines to pilots and the propensity of pilots to leave the Air Force to become commercial airline pilots. 1
  3. 3yr. ADSC IIRC... The application PDSM will have all of that info. I can't speak for AFSOC, but I can tell you that overall patch wearers are in high demand both in the traditional tactics role and elsewhere. Being a WO will open more doors for you than it will close. However, if you are worried about what opportunities you will have upon graduation you may be interested in WIC for the wrong reasons. I'm not saying this is the case, but that type of question would certainly raise suspicion in my community. Apply if you want to be the best leader you can be in and out of the airplane. Don't apply if you are only interested in the benefit you/your career might get out of it. Edited to correct years.
  4. A few friends of mine stayed at the Taylor Oak apartments off exit 9. Furnished and not too bad for the short time you are there.
  5. Yes, I've canceled a few trips using the trip insurance that usaa offers. Depending on the level of protection you purchased it can be as simple as sending proof that you did cancel your reservation to getting a memo signed by someone you work with citing a military requirement. Very little push back each time and funds were delivered quickly.
  6. The AMEX platinum is great for the benefits; but if you are looking to rack up extra points their Everyday Preferred card is better. 2-3x points per dollar at grocery stores and gas stations plus 50% bonus if you have more than 30 transactions per month. It is now my day to day card and the platinum card gets little use except for the benefits.
  7. I'd like to see the 130j watch as well. Still taking orders?
  8. This is a pretty simplistic view IMHO. We all know not all schools are created equal. Someone who is going to school is viewed as in the top X% of their peers. Within that group there is still a difference in quality between #1 and #69+. The quality of school that someone gets picked for is obviously going to correlate to their ranking among their peers. Should the last candidate selected really be the one to represent the AF in the joint environment or with our allies? Or should a "better" (for lack of a better word) officer fill that role, someone who will likely spend more of their career operating in that environment?
  9. Very niche market at best. If you are worried about the hr or so to get a photo taken, do you even have time to run a business?
  10. I wouldn't make that bet.
  11. Now you'll get to deal with gateway's terrible radio. Your 20 min out call will only be heard once you are in the chocks. Enjoy.
  12. Sounds like a great idea, ETAR has plenty of ramp space and a wide open pattern to support a tanker sq. /s
  13. I saw this floating around FB the other day, lots of bitter individuals posting about getting screwed over and having to live in [insert terrible base]. Most of the arguments this guy makes are very abstract or big picture ideas (service before self, population growth of a city) that he tries to tie directly to individual behavior across the service. This makes his arguments invalid in my opinion. Trying to say Airmen should/will put service before self and choose a "bad" assignment sounds like a ridiculous ROTC case study that shoes think has a black/white answer. We can certainly do better at matching talent with the right jobs. I think that starts at the SQ/CC level. These are the folks that (should) know their people the best and be best equipped to find the correct next assignment for them. But giving commanders the ability to hire subordinates (outside of BNR billets) or officers the opportunity to hand pick their assignments will certainly creat a whole new batch of favoritism issues and bitter underperformed who post on FB because they don't get to homestead at Eglin. In the end, the assignment system would be significantly better if leaders would simply lead more and worry about what their boss would think less. I guess the same thing can be said about all issues in the AF.
  14. I think you're doing it wrong.
  15. Another happy NBoKC customer. First time home buyer, just closed with Trevor Campbell from overseas. He was easy to work with and we closed within 30 days. Couldn't recommend him and NBoKC enough.
  16. ALWAYS. A relative newbie at 3yrs/1200 hrs. The herk has taken me to some if the best and most of worst places this world has to offer. I wouldn't have it any other way. Cheers to herk drivin'!
  17. Clouseau, better give your sarcasm detector the ole Lockheed fix.
  18. Yup another AC.
  19. That's what I got out of it.
  20. What are you new? What about the entire mx supply chain? That goes away. I'm sure the behind the scenes footprint (mx, FTU courseware, etc) of the -10 is smaller than other a/c but there are notable savings associated with cutting an entire airframe that surpass the hourly operational cost. Again, nobody here is saying that losing the jet will be easy and that we won't take a hit in operational capability. Times are tough, we just have to get used to some lean times.
  21. 2 Though I will say that the patch that I most respect is currently an EP in my sq and he is 100% able to balance the two hats. He makes it very clear that his primary job as an IP, EP, and WIC grad is to make people better aviators.
  22. I always laugh at this one.... Santa Claus, like all pilots, gets regular visits from the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA examiner arrived for the pre-Christmas flight check. In preparation, Santa had the elves wash the sled and bathe all the reindeer. Santa got his logbook out and made sure all his paperwork was in order. He knew they would examine all his equipment and put his flying skills to the test. The examiner walked slowly around the sled. He checked the reindeer harnesses, the landing gear, and Rudolf's nose. He painstakingly reviewed Santa's weight and balance calculations for sled's enormous payload. Finally, they were ready for the checkride. Santa got in and fastened his seatbelt and shoulder harness and checked the compass. Then the examiner hopped in carrying, to Santa's surprise, a shotgun. “What's that for?” asked Santa incredulously. The examiner winked and said, “I'm not supposed to tell you this ahead of time,” as he leaned over to whisper in Santa's ear, “but you're gonna lose an engine on takeoff.”
  23. Shhhh. Those Missions pay the bills.
  24. Let me guess... Out of smash at the top, tried to light the wicks and 2x compressor stall? I climbed out of -38 and tried to unhook my leg straps on the chute and realized I never hooked them around my legs....
