Currently you're looking at 200-300 hours for a new guy. If it's your squad's turn to hit one of the deployed stages for 120, then you can add another 200 hours to that number. Right now the C-5s and the KC-10s are getting more hours than we are, and that's only from hearing from friends who are flying those airframes. The ops tempo is never exactly where you want it - and it never will be. My advice? Pick your airframe on the type of flying that you'll be doing. I know I'm biased, but you can't go wrong with the 17.

FYI - for those coming out to a certain Air Force facility in SW Asia; the nazi's have struck again. Now you are no longer allowed to wear any type of open toe footwear in the chow hall (regardless of ankle strap). So to sum up these idiotic footwear rules: - flip flops only to pool/shower - other sandals WITH a heel strap around CC only - shoes/boots only to the chow hall - if wearing boots with shorts, must have white socks.

Caught a ride over to OPS the other day with a Comm NCO who said the one guy who is charge of that project went home for a wedding for FIVE WEEKS. He left roughly two weeks ago, which would bring WI-FI to the Bra area around mid-May. He's the only guy who can install it. And I'm sure you guys caught this one, but the day of the pool's "grand opening"? It was closed for cleaning. Peace.

If you can make it, Mall of America at Minn/St Paul. Also Chennault, LA if they'll still ask your food order on downwind - $1 crawfish etouffe that was just amazing...(the FBO kicks back some dough to the restaurant). There was a great little restaurant up in Hutchison, KS (if I remember correctly). There's your standard burritos at Freebirds at College Station, TX...there's the steak place at Amarillo, TX where if you can eat this enormous steak with all the fixings in 30 minutes or something it'll be free. Ellington Field in Houston rocks... and that's about all the penguins on that iceberg. Peace.

Toro, I thought you were making some insightful comments on this until you had to throw in some heavy bashing. Just for the record, the only "kids" who log A->B as training are UPT studs doing cross countries... Us "fat kids" in AMC don't log training from A->B around OIF/OEF. We DO log combat time.

Being a SELO nowadays around AMC does not hold the esteem that you described back in SAC. It's just another job to stick a LT. I know many a SELO that aren't squared away to say the least.

I wish I could remember the exact details as it was told to me - this was told to me by a wizened old instructor of mine in the C-17 at CHS who used to fly the KC-10. Flying home from Europe talking to Boston center, this 10 pilot responds to a female controller check-in and then not realizing that the mic is still keyed indicates something like "with a voice like that I'll bet she'd like me to " etc...so of course the controller asks "Calling Boston say again"...and this retard instead of keeping his mouth shut actually says his callsign and "disregard". Long story short, Boston ATC called his unit on the west coast, and shortly after he arrived back home the wing/cc ordered him to fly on his own dime commercially to Boston and apologize in person to the controller. -

Whatever bro...my wife likes the show and we usually have a good time laughing at all these people who should never get near a microphone. Plus it was in Charleston - how cool was that to see my town on national TV. The singer in question is a reservist...probably explains why she has the time to try out for idol. And I don't believe she was an AFA grad - just attended for a year or two. And the previous post nailed why she got tossed...decent singer but pretty slim shod vibratro. I did kind of lose a little respect for myself as a C-17 pilot though hearing her description of our mission.

My wife and I promised each other that we would NEVER travel with an infant...whenever we do have kids. A recent USAir flight from CLT to SFO with like 14 separate wailing little gremlins, including one that wouldn't stop kicking my f'ing seat, convinced us that common courtesy to other human beings would preclude us from subjecting others to one of the worst flights I've ever sat through. (And I've been on a KC-135 rotator for 12+ hours!!) Thankfully I've never had to share my seat with an obese passengers. Ick. And my opinion of TSA? Don't get me started.

The air force will pay $250 per semester hour. A normal grad course is 3 semester hours. Hence, USAF tuition assistance will pay $750 a course. I've found most MBA degrees price one business course around $1100-1800. If you have the GI Bill, then you are most likely eligible to use it to pay the rest of the required amount, I believe it's called "top up". Once you're accepted to a school, they will give you an academic plan for your major - once you get this academic plan to the education office, they can begin your TA. The GI "top up" is paid by you - you are then reimbursed by the VA. FWIW, I've looked at a ton of schools and looked through a good "Consumer's Guide" to online education (Bears Guide to Correspondence Learning). I don't think much of Tauro, Univ of Phoenix (sp?), ERAU, etc. The guys in my squad who are doing Tauro write a paper every two weeks and after a measly 18 months of that (no exams and no thesis) they get a master's in "Leadership Studies" or some other BS. I'm thinking of University of Southern New Hampshire...14 classes at @$1400 a class. Having gone to undergrad in the area, I know it's a real school with a real reputation. (I sound like an advertisement! :) I figure that yes I'll spend more time and money, but in the end, I will have still checked the box if I decide to stay in, and if I get out, I have a degree that employers will recognize/respect.

Which begs the question...is the white sock/short sock actually written anywhere? And granted, I ask the question instead of looking it up, but ultimately it's such a silly issue to begin with. If the base appointed first shirt (or representative) walks over and I do have my sunglasses on my head in the chow hall... then I suppose it IS his job to tell me that I'm not in regs...but he'd better know the reg to back it up. It's all so f'n Wouldn't it make a great Bud Light Real Men of Genius Commerical though? The current C-17 exchange pilot up in Canada was an Altus guy...and we just sent our wing chief of stan eval up on a 179 to Canada. We did the math and it's somewhere in the neighborhood of $22,000 in per diem.

Whatever it is that you were fearing is here at CHS. We have little local reports that we have to fill in at Base Ops upon landing including starting fuel, ending fuel, and time spent training. I'm not sure if someone is actually scrutinizing the reports in order to accuse Capt Gas Guzzler of landing with too much fuel, but I think they are moving in that general direction. I believe that we will have to start using CFPS to calculate fuel required the day prior and then order up that fuel for the tail to even get it that much closer.

You shouldn't experience any discrimination/ostracization...however, I would recommend still going to the club with your bros on the Friday afternoons at UPT...order up a soda or whatever, but that was a great time for talking about flying and unwinding every week. However, after having unwound, nothing says you have to follow the crowd to Scooters (or whatever redneck bar your UPT base patronizes).
