Every emerging community has a few new guys who don't understand their overall place in the puzzle and get a little over motivated. It's fine. I'd always rather deal with the guy who needs to be pulled back a bit than the ones who aren't aggressive, have no pride or mission ownership or care too much about your snickering. Bottom line, young guys proud of what they do and leaning forward frequently make asses of themselves. No big deal. The onus lies on older IP's to temper that passion with maturity and grow a seasoned force, something the U28's are actually doing very well right now.

Why don't you go to HRT and ask them?

The Passing of Rich Hauben, Founder of Baseops.net

Taking donations for flowers to the funeral or anything like that? -
Eh, I'll probably grab a copy just because I read a lot. One thing stood out in the trailer though, the part where the retired flag is talking about how scared people are in the crew bus enroute to a mission. WTF? Does that seem odd to anyone else? If I saw a dude nervously looking at pictures of his wife before we flew in combat I'd have him stay on the ground.

I saw that kind of thing all the time in AMC, the majority there really has no idea what C130's actually do.

Have read most of it now. Entertaining, yes. But I'll hold to my original impression that this was a mega-douch move.

I think they TOTALLY get it (Suicides)

I think you guys are losing the forest through the trees. Grossman an is an engaging speaker with relevant ideas who has helped people. He has at least 2 excellent & thought provoking books to his name. If you're missing his overall point because you disagree with the way he's phrased his opening salvo, that's valid feedback, but relatively minor and certainly tangential. -
Wait, what?

Another shooting - In front of Empire State Building
tac airlifter replied to spaceman's topic in Squadron Bar
The guy had a pistol, not a rifle. He shot one person & walked away; cops then shot him plus 9 bystanders hitting the gunman 10 times. Police shot a total of 16 rounds (neither officer "emptied his clip"). Heres a link: https://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/08/25/nypd-shooting-bystander-victims-hit-by-police-gunfire/ Hardly a mass shooting. -
I can't even comprehend the level of douche bag it takes for a guy totally read in on Tier 1 programs to get out of AD & write a book detailing any part of those programs without allowing your former boss (SOCOM) to have a look first. Writing a book about yourself is corny enough, this just adds a potentially criminal breach of current TTPs on top, with some broken trust between your former comrades/commanders mixed in for good measure. My take (taking the news story at face value & assuming there aren't other machinations at work): this guy is a dick.

I have high praise for the SCAR 16 and have been told the 17 surpasses in quality. Truly innovative design. That said, I don't have a high round count so I can't speak to how the stock will be 3 k rounds from now. I don't care for the trigger and I wish aftermarket AR grips installed. I just put a MIAD on my LMT, it makes a difference to me. I also don't really care about the folding option, just not something I can see myself ever caring about. Neither do I really need the cheek riser, although it works better than I'd expected. Bottom line, amazing weapon with some things I don't need but were well executed. I made a mistake several years ago purchasing a Robinson XCR because i was sold by the description on the Internet & I was reluctant to make a similar mistake with the FN. not the case here at all, this weapon is GTG. The 17 is getting better reports from gov users, although I've not even handled one myself.

Va. guardsman faces terrorism charge in W.Va. The Associated Press Posted : Tuesday Aug 21, 2012 19:29:11 EDT MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A West Virginia man arrested while running in desert camouflage with an AR-15 training rifle is a member of the Virginia National Guard who served a tour of duty in Iraq, and his father says he’s not a terrorist. Stephen Alemar tells The Hagerstown Herald-Mail that he believes his 23-year-old son, William Alemar, was just trying to stay in shape for his next military assignment when he was arrested near two Martinsburg schools on Monday. Related reading Police: W.Va. man found armed near schools (Aug. 20) William Alemar was charged with committing a terrorist act after police found him carrying two knives and ammunition clips, and wearing a bulletproof vest. Alemar remained in the Eastern Regional Jail on Tuesday on $50,000 bond. Defense attorney Kevin Mills said his team is currently evaluating whether Alemar may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and it’s requested records from his service overseas. Alemar’s father, meanwhile, said his son didn’t mean any harm. “He’s not a terrorist,” he said. “He’s not a bad kid.” Stephen Alemar said his son graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va., and joined the National Guard after he failed to get into the U.S. Naval Academy. Army spokesman Ray Gall said records confirm that Alemar enlisted in January 2007. William Alemar is assigned to the Virginia National Guard’s Company B, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Woodstock, Va., according to West Virginia National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. David Lester. Alemar deployed to Iraq from July 1 to Dec. 6, 2011, Lester said, and was assigned to Task Force 183 for convoy security duty. Martinsburg police discovered after they arrested Alemar that the gun he was carrying fires pellets, not live rounds. A search of Alemar’s home found additional military equipment, which police seized as evidence. I see guys running in full IBA daily + weapon daily, never occured to me it was terrorism.

Marines think? And I don't know anyone who has yet bitched out when asked to fight in the last decade. If guys leave after honorable combat service, I say thank you, and I wish them success at whatever is next.

Online classes for MBA/other Masters Program

I got a CFII & MEI through the mil comp as a multi-engine IP. When I became a single engine IP I got my CFI added when I renewed my ticket & didn't have to pay extra or take any additional tests. Lesson learned though: I had a multi engine commercial ticket & the FAA returned my paperwork; make sure you get single engine commercial added before you apply for the CFI. Same FSDO re-did mine for free. FWIW, I recommend you use the money from TA for an ATP instead of CFI, I think it's more useful. Just my .02, good luck. -
Interesting work, thanks for collecting and posting. That said, that AF will survive. They'll simply upgrade more people who aren't ready and magically replace the EPs who leave. And those new people will mostly do fine. And everything will continue on.

I read up on stagg, I don't know how I can enjoy a 73% 145 proof drink.

Speaking of bourbon, I'm about to drop 120$ on some pappy van winkle 20 year based on word of mouth alone. Anyone actually tried it? I'm not normally into aged bourbon but I have some Jefferson 18 year which is amazing so I know it's possible to have an older bourbon without the tannins destroying the flavor.

No. Good luck with that though, people who buy into that logic always agree it was worth it in the end.

AFSOC is in a time of transition WRT deployment tempo, but i've not yet had less than a 1:1, and usually been around a 1:2.

Exactly what game changing capabilities does it bring to the fight?
-
Shack. I'm constantly struck by people who forget the human element and continuously double down on the idea that if we just get the right equipment everything else will be successful. Philosophically it's akin to the E-8 who thinks enforcing uniform standards is corollary to mission success. The AF love affair with technology is closer to religious zealotry than military strategy. I could do succssful ISR with binoculars, strike with hand grenades or airdrop with a a sectional (while VFR!) and so could anyone who is a reasonably competent aviator filled with a burning desire to win. The great AF fail, which this author can't see, is the total mismanagement of and inability to identify the handful of people in every career who passionately want to win. I love my gadgetry, but it reaches a point where the time spent troubleshooting exceeds the time saved. At that point, it takes leadership and experience and drive to win the fight regardless. The AF continues to attract people who are capable of exactly that, I work with them and have been fighting with them for a decade. Unfortunately over time the system rewards the risk adverse and administratively minded instead of the warrior. I don't know how to change it, but i know it can be changed.

There might be a few other aircraft out there....

Heard today from the guys at Eglin Range that the F-35 isn't certified to fly in IMC. That can't be true, right?

Sweet deal for them, AZ is beautiful & I wish I could be stationed there.
