I don't think you can ever tell your boss "you're done" following some stupid AFI. I think it is silly that leadership at my base is very concerned with us wearing green socks under our flight suits because an AFI says so. Nobody has ever seen my socks and if I wear black socks not one person will know and the mission will not be harmed at all. However, this "issue" has been brought up multiple times and there is talk of implementing "sock checks." I think this is a perfect example of a dumb AFI that adds nothing to the mission. I wonder what would happen if I told my boss "Sir, this AFI is stupid and contributes nothing to the mission so therefore I'm not going to follow it." I would immediately get a LOC.

You are saying exactly what I've told them for the past few years. I've fought everybody along the way and had no luck, they won't budge. When you sign the agreement online, there is a check box that says "Revoking the benefit does not AUTOMATICALLY remove the ADSC". To me this implies that it can be removed but its not automatic, which I guess is not true. There is no higher authority you can take this to than the AFBCMR, which I did and lost. Another guy in my squadron did the same thing and lost. The paperwork said that we had not been "wronged by the AF". My commitment for the transfer is almost up now and I plan on getting out, but I'm still tempted to write a letter to Congress so other dudes don't get screwed by this. Also, I will have used 24 months of it to get my MBA and still have 12 left that I would love to give to my kid, but there is no way I'm taking the chance to "unrevoke" it as they would probably try to start the commitment over again.

Forgot to add that he left in the middle of the lease with no prior notice. It took me about a month to find another renter and cost me about $1400, which was partly factored into the repayment since I only took a $500 deposit from him. And that he paid me late 5 out of the 7 months he lived there and never paid the roughly $300 in late fees. I don't really think it was a dick move. It was dick of him to not take responsibility for ruining the carpet in a very nice house. We don't work at IBM and the AF expects us to be accountable for our actions outside of work also. If I wouldn't have threatened that I would likely be out the full amount. Lesson learned: next time I will run a credit check and take a full month's rent for deposit. I also wrongly assumed that I had to rent it to the first person that was interested in the house. Also, that was the cheapest carpet that Lowe's had, other than the industrial crap.

The guys above are correct. I ops tested it and revoked the transfer. The AF would not remove the committment no matter what. I even filed a complaint with the highest board in the AF, the Air Force Board of Corrections for Military Records on the basis that the ADSC is unfair because the AF hasn't spent any money yet and no benefits have been used. I waited one year for their response and I still ended up losing the case. The only way out of the committment is to Palace Chase.

There is a guy in my squadron that was twice passed over and separating in a few weeks. Great dude, multiple deployments, instructor in the B-1, teaching at the FTU, 1 year remote to Korea, with SOS in residence and correspondence, and a MASTERS degree at the time of his board. No negative paperwork. If this guy wasn't a good dude/hard worker I might understand, but he is one of the best guys in the squadron. He had a P.

I allowed them to have pets. I should have asked for a bigger deposit but it wouldn't have mattered since the carpet was $4000. It is very simple, I put in the lease that if any damage was done to the house they would be held responsible. There were never any pets in the house before he moved in and then there were piss stains everywhere when they moved out. I think that would have been a pretty easy case to win in small claims court. He signed a contract and he must abide by it. Why are you surprised that I got anything out of him? I asked the SNCO's in my squadron what they thought I should do and I did exactly what they recommended. They all told me he would be held accountable by his chain of command for the incident and I think he knew it.

I was selected for Major on AD. What happens if I leave for the Guard before I pin on? Do I get to pin on right away if I'm hired into a Major's billet? If I'm only a month or so away from pinning on in AD, should I just wait until then and then make the move or does it matter?

I recently had a TSgt and his family at Ellsworth that rented my house. When he moved out his dogs ruined my carpet with piss stains everywhere. I had two carpet cleaners come out and both said the carpet was ruined and took pictures for me. I got an estimate from Lowe's for the cost, which was $4000. I told him that I would pay $1000 of it since the carpet was 4 years old and he was going to pay the other $3000. He gave me a little trouble and tried to not pay it but I told him that I was going to take it to small claims court and email his CC and First Shirt. We eventually agreed that he would pay me $200 per month interest free for 15 months because there was no way he could pay me up front. It would have been very simple and cheap to take him to small claims court in South Dakota, you don't even need a lawyer. He has been paying me for a few months, and if he stops I will contact his chain of command and take him to court. If he is military, and you take him to court and win and he doesn't pay, it will likely affect his security clearance.

That plan will not work out well. They let you rank order which classes you would prefer to take and I always rank ordered the leadership classes at the bottom and the core classes at the top. They ended up giving me all the leadership courses as my first 5 courses. Not sure if switching is allowed but I think if you tried to do it that way you would waste a lot of time and effort on the leadership classes that wouldn't count for anything later.

I went through most of the process last year with Cameron Brooks. I filled out all the required paperwork and had my phone interview. The guy told me that I would be "accepted" into their program but wanted me to commit to living anywhere in the US. I am working on my MBA at UT Austin part-time and told him that I had to stay in Texas to finish the degree and that was a no-go for him. If you truly don't care where you will live after the AF it seems like a great option. But for us, one of the main reasons I'm getting out is to stay near family in Texas. The companies that recruit with them seem very good, mostly all Fortune 500. I think the pay is low $90's to start. Speaking of the GE JOLP, I put my resume on their website a few months back and got a call and email last week from a former USAF EC-130 pilot that works there now and he is looking to hire ASAP for positions in Houston. PM me if you want his name. Amazon is also really good about hiring former military officers and the pay is really good. When I finish my MBA, I'm going to try and break into Private Wealth Management at a top firm like Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan. If that doesn't happen, Amazon and USAA are also high on my list. If you get on www.linkedin.com you will find there are a ton of former military guys at all the top companies. Most of them are more than willing to help other military guys out.

It was flat out denied. Now I have to start over, do the SSS, etc...I guess I could just move the separation date up and be legal but I really don't want to get out until September so I have to wait til next month. What I'm worried about is now that they know I'm going to leave, they will frag me for a deployment, before I can redo the paperwork, because then it makes you ineligible to apply for Palace Chase. Just reread your comment. If they make me wait 120 days to apply again that will be the biggest load of BS the AF has ever done.

Mine got denied today because I requested a separation date that was more than 180 days in the future. The separation date has to be between 90-180 days from when you apply. Ridiculous that it didn't tell me that when I filled out the app. Now I have to start over and get the SQ/CC and the WG/CC to sign off on it again.

IMO, if you can't or don't want to fly for the airlines, getting an MBA from a top school is the best thing you can do for your career. I went to the Military Prospective Student Day at Harvard Business School last year and met a ton of great guys that were all headed to ridiculously good jobs. I can verify that these guys are in fact starting out at around $200,000. They didn't have any superstar stats. They were doing the same things that we do every day. It totally changed my perception of what it was like at a top school. The veterans clubs are pretty strong and it was pretty much like hanging out with guys from the squadron. I visited HBS, Wharton, Tuck, and Kellogg and all of them love military guys and are trying to recruit more of us. My original plan was to go to a top ten school full-time but I have an awesome SQ/CC who let me enroll at the University of Texas part-time. I have to drive from Abilene to Dallas every other weekend and have class on Fridays and Saturday's but it beats being jobless for two years.

I'm getting out later this year and plan to do on-campus recruiting to get a job. I made a trip to all the top business schools in the country last year and there are tons of military guys at all the top MBA programs, and the schools really want us there. Ok it sounds like that is correct in your situation. I had to get appraisals on both houses and the appraisal had to come in above what the new loan amount would be. USAA does not require an appraisal if you got your first loan through them. I rolled the dice with the $400 appraisal fee that NBOKC charges and it worked out. I had positive equity in both houses.

I originally closed both my loans with USAA but one of them was sold to PHH Mortgage and the other one to GMAC. It shouldn't matter who old the lender is. They are receiving a check from the new bank for the payoff amount and they really don't have a say in whether it gets done or not.

I wanted to give a huge thanks to this board and Dave Devine for saving me a ton of money with a VA refinance. I originally applied for a USAA refinance and did a search on here and found National Bank of Kansas City. I canceled my loan with USAA because NBOKC was over $5000 cheaper. I got my VA loan for 3.25% vs. my old rate of 5%, saving me about $200 per month. Nothing out of pocket at closing, got to skip two house payments, and get all my escrow (about $2000) back. From application to closing only took 3 weeks. USAA was going to take 3 months. I am refinancing my rental with him also and closing on Monday, 3.375% on that one. Thanks again guys!

To be fair, I think he liked to push the limits on the regs a lot. For example, he would wear a tan t-shirt and nike shorts to the gym instead of the official PT uniform. He did this for awhile until the OG/CD, another B-1 guy, saw him at the gym and asked him WTF? He made a name for himself then. He had a couple incidents like that so I don't think anybody found it unexpected when that happened at the chow hall.

He actually did not get sent home. He was only there to drop off a jet and bring another one back. He wasn't deployed there at the time. SF tried to file charges of Failure to Obey a Lawful Order on him for not surrendering his ID when a senior officer requested it. His punishment was to get taken off of evaluator orders back at home. He was also forbidden from going back to the Deid and did not go with us on the next deployment.
