At the macro level, yes (high level of 11B/12B for example). The problem is Big Blue doesn't track K-prefix, which is what the ops squadrons need to get guys out of the FTU qualified, effective and safe (not to mention FTU/OT/WIC/etc). After a few 365s and homestation buffoonery, IPs generally pull the handles for a reserve+airline/FedEx job. IWSOs don't have the airline opportunity but only have a 6-year commitment after winging, so they tend to be out even earlier in their careers. Root cause is too many non-tactical taskings; a few ideas to reduce these (probably require DoD level attention if congressman is listening...) Do we really need a forward A-staff? Does the CAOC need to be forward (conduct most ops over BLOS comms/SIPR, with a small comm relay function at the forward base) Look at eliminating/combining some of the proliferation of joint task forces (each of which require their own staff) If we decide we need to continue training an Afghan air force, use contractors or bring them CONUS to a training course

And fuel spray looks like you're trying to AR in a hurricane if all 4 pumps are on since the receptacle is right in front of the windscreen- 53 replies

I think most folks would agree the DOD wastes a lot of money on the acquisitions/contracting side. The Pentagon is to blame for some of this, but some lies in the enormous infrastructure required to comply with the FARs. Simplify the FARs as much as possible (a quick initial fix, eliminate "preferred" vendors and set asides for XYZ owned businesses. Small businesses are awesome but too many get stood up deliberately to compete for contracts and end up not being able to follow through and cost more than if the product/service was purely competed in the first place). Similar to #1, let the DOD roll over money between FY. We don't usually have budgets anyway so it would increase capability and eliminate the flying around the flag pole/buying pallets of flat screen TVs that happens every September. Let DOD recolor money. When a MAJCOM is trying to sustain their aging aircraft, being able to pull in the flat screen or flying hour funds at the end of the year will help instead of waiting 3 years for a POM to kick in. Allow services to waive admin rules in the interest of personnel/mission accomplishment. A lot of the additional duties (records management, etc) or training (trafficking in persons) or X program of the day are impossible for the AF to get rid of because of an obscure congressional mandate tasking the DoD to do it.

Agree that an operational mindset is needed. However, except for specific operations where cyber could become the supported asset, the users are the "supported command". Otherwise if base comm pulls 30℅ of systems off the network while the CCRI inspectors are here, cyber defense wins but the rest of the AF can't execute their mission.

Military One Source doesn't keep records and will meet off base if needed; they are not 100℅ confidential in the sense they have to report if you are suicidal or threatening to harm others. However, they only have a limited number of sessions IIRC. If the concern with chaplains is the religious part, they will counsel without pushing religion if that's what you want; many have professional counseling training as well. Their perception of "scamming" BAH includes guys/gals with roommates, cheap places, etc who bank BAH. Dual mil couples were viewed in the debate a few months ago as "working the system" as well. The term housing allowance does obscure the fact that it's part of the pay package for each member - no matter how they choose to use it. All the BAH cut proponents forget that the DoD pays the same base pay wherever you live, unlike company X which has to offer significantly higher salary in Seattle vs Stillwater to be competitive.

I'm all for being skeptical of political decisions... but what do you want them to release? Should we release the target pack slides for every HVI or ISIL weapons factory that gets shwacked?

Maybe... and many pilots would be happy to go obliterate targets. This scenario relies on Mattis that he won't say "Mr. President we don't have enough pilots to be slide monkeys at CJTF-HQ" instead. -
Why not include getting all your required clearances and accounts on the inprocessing checklist? Kind of like having to be CMR or turn in your flight records before first flight.

My leadership told me I wasn't allowed to enroll in DL as a school select. I think some of the early DL enrollment was leadership trying to make guys IDE complete by their 2BTZ board.

Being TACON to the "varsity squad" is way different than working with the regular GFCs. The BLOS tie in to regular C2, ISRD, and the CAOC does make you a voice-directed RPA.

Sending country funded spin up course on tactics (crawl walk run approach). For example, academics on comm, training rules, 3.1-General Planning stuff. Then A-A only/SEAD only sorties, followed by small force exercises, etc. Would take longer but if the goal is to produce allies who are good at executing and integrating with us in X future conflict it will produce more reliable partners in the end. Similar to the mission/CC academics beforehand to ensure everyone is executing at the same level.

Follow 11-214 (i.e, don't add on to it) (e.g, dynamic weapon deconfliction and block adjustment for unexpected weather not allowed even though IAW 11-214) More training for white force. If you don't "have" some information and you are withholding it to drive a DLO, recognize when to end the tailspin of planners/intel trying to dig into it and tell them "I can't give you target composition for the airport at Hiway since we have escort DLOs for there", etc. Expand airspace access as much as DoE allows. No changes post - final coord unless necessary for safety of flight (don't change the deconfliction plan just to satisfy a VMC international player) Make the security paperwork more efficient - kills learning when 50% of your squadron can't go to some meetings and briefs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgCr8Ljb90g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ecq7kRmCho Plenty of things to do in a COIN fight with overwhelming force... Africa and Philippines, SOF support, agreed there is a place for ISR/fire support in a SOF only situation. If commanders are not executing IAW doctrine, at least an optimist can hope that they can debrief and change their ways appropriately without the shock of a near-peer taking out links/ISR. Thought there was a chance initially with OIR; unfortunately the Army was incorrectly left as JFC (JFC should have been the CFACC based on who was providing the preponderance of forces in OIR at the time) which resulted in a lot of the same practices being applied and a lost opportunity.

We gave the GFC and 3 letter agencies 15 years to try things their way, the only thing taking authority away from the Capt on the ground does is put him and his troops in danger. Japan was an insurgency in the making (ref. the guys who came out of the jungle in various SE asia countries 10 years later ready to die for the emperor); it could only be defeated with overwhelming force. Plus a lot of the "need" for ISR is someone just wanting video overhead without an op going on or even EEIs to look for. That's part of what's driven the explosion in RPA CAPs, etc. and created something similar to the CSI effect for leadership (just like juries want to see DNA/etc all the time, leadership will not approve anything without incontrovertible FMV).
-
OA-X would not be allowed to employ without the general or higher on the other end of the ISR tether approving it.

Fury 02 (B-1) crashed in 1997 with 4 fatalities. That callsign still flies regularly on B-1s.

SAC tactics didn't perform well in a real war: https://www.historynet.com/the-11-day-war.htm. All platforms (especially bombers) need the aggressiveness and skilled pushing up to the limits taught in tactical aviation. Even if your airplane only pulls 2 G, fly every threat reaction to 2.0 G. 1.7 isn't conservative, it's a debrief point. Finally, ACC uses failure to improve yourself and others in the debrief. AMC and AFGSC use it to generate Q-3s and FEBs.

Sure. How are the 4x stealthy fighters going to get to the target without a stealthy tanker? What about the ISR survivability? We aren't going to "carpet bomb" anything, guided weapons generally give better Pk. The Russian IADS has gotten much stronger since the Cold War, plus they like to sell it to other countries now too.

Dynamically target.. some cruise missiles have sensors but a human running radio, link, and a pod/radar still has an advantage. Otherwise how do you get the coords to shoot missiles at in the first place?
