Airman dies during survival training in Pensacola Bay
nsplayr replied to czecksikhs's topic in General Discussion
Him Him... Wonder if he was doing ejection water survival (i.e. that would require the parasailing part) in order to fly in fighters at Eglin? Seems like as a previous HC/MC-130 and CV-22 guy he would have done the non-ejection course previously. I remember that course and they seemed to do a good job of keeping civilian boat traffic away from us. Either way it's a damn shame...too many Air Force brothers dying this year. -
People are starting to piece together other details based on what was released in No Easy Day. Almost done with the book finally, I enjoyed the writer's writing style and he did seem humble and straight-forward about everything. Much better written than Lone Survivor for a sorta comparison. https://openchannel.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/09/14323825-satellite-images-appear-to-reveal-cias-secret-bin-laden-training-ground?lite

Wow, poor form on her part. Allowed me to discover she was recently stationed with someone I knew from my Det (also a female finance officer). Maybe I should pass her the word for her pal to check herself before she wrecks herself...that may be futile at this point...

Stop liking your own posts. Know your audience...no one cares if your dick is longer than anyone else's WRT deploying. You are not helping your states cause to get ops people to "stop hating on support." And I think I found the problem with the AF Crimes' data: That's not going to be very friendly to the typical aircrew deployment cycle. Multiple shorter deployments (60-120 days at a go) per year. My community until very recently did 75-on, 75-off so everyone got multiple trips per year but it seems like the way that data is crunched, they'd show up once with 75 days as the "average deployment length" which ends up being meaningless.

Look, you came in here guns blazin' saying we should "stop bashing support" and that you and your fellow finance officers are the #1 deployed career field. If you'd stuck around a little while before opening up your pie hole, you'd have seen there are several members here from support career fields that provide good info and perspective to a mostly ops crowd. On your deployment claim, I provided a link that showed, with data straight from Big Blue, that the 65FX career field is nowhere near the most deployed career field. So not only are you barking up the wrong tree with a deployment dick measuring contest in a room full of frequent deployers, you were wrong. So here's some takeaways from this debrief: 1. Talk in complete, coherent sentences. 2. Know your audience. 3. Get the facts right. You and your briefcase are welcome back when you're digested those three lessons. It's not about being ops vs support or about your gender or your rank or your political beliefs or whatever...you came in here talking sh*t for no real good reason and couldn't back it up with the facts.
-
Are you a 65FX? If so, there are 525 of you in the air force, and you were deployed for an average of 65 days per year CAO FY2010. Not even close to the top of the list. And while it seems like you're a female, don't try the dick measuring thing around here, it rarely works out well.

Unless it's changed that's true for MC-130H Talon IIs but not for MC-130P Shadow. Should be a moot point once we have all MC-130J Commando IIs.

FG, You're right for that situation, but I think most people around here are A) deploying frequently enough that they're in as low of a tax bracket at they're gonna get and B) are not planning as if there will be no gains from market investments. Even if B was true you could invest in the G fund exclusively, which is another big advantage of TSP in general.

Interfund transfers. Question for the masses just to QC my thoughts...does it make sense that a person should strive to contribute all of the 17K they can put into roth TSP annually while in a CTZE area? My thought was to save up money in something fairly liquid (money market fund, savings account, etc.) while home and then make the entire 17K contribution while deployed to get both the initial contributions and earnings tax free. You're losing out on whatever interest that money could be earning in the funds while you're home (certainly would be a higher rate than a savings account right now) but the long-term tax benefits would be worth it vs contributing some of that 17K while home and the contributions being taxed up front. Make sense or off base?

Fair enough...I figured the correct term, "emoticon" sounded even gayer...

Mypay says, The way I read that it seems like if you want to put money from your ACP bonus into Roth TSP you have to do so at the finance office. Monthly incentive pay (i.e. flight pay) should be no problem since it's all from your paycheck and you just enter the dollar amount you want. Anyone have any insight why traditional TSP continues to use a % of pay where Roth uses a dollar amount? Seems unnecessarily complicated, why not just use one measure for both?

Definitely in jest...beer smiley thing after the original post generally means it's all in good fun. I think it's funny as hell...plus I highly enjoy that now that I'm in the other U-28 squadron I can give dudes in the 319th sh*t for it. The 319th UDM (and an extremely old-head gunship guy) has a demotivational poster hanging in his office that says, "We're basically like the 319th of the Ground" and has a pic of navy SEALs on it...makes me chuckle every time I'm over there.
-
I prefer to think of the SEALs as "The 319th of the Ground" rather than the other way around

AWACS not the same as JSTARS...what's with the title?

Well yea, you'll hear it here eventually, but if he wants to know now the answers are probably not gonna be found here. Not sure if they're taking any new folks for slick PC-12s (i.e. part of NSAV out at Cannon) anymore. What's leading you to ask, you headed there, want to head there, etc.?

Electronic flight bags could boost operational safety, effectiveness
nsplayr replied to ClearedHot's topic in Squadron Bar
The one I have has all my personal apps on it as well as the squadron-provided apps (phaero, good reader, etc.) that have out pubs, checklists, etc. Nothing locked down at all, no special software. They were locked down initially but that was lifted quickly. -

All of those things can be overcome man, keep pressing. Once you get a good system in place it's infinitely easier to update your personal pubs and the ipad has about 69 extra features that aren't included in a bag full of paper. And tell your comm folks they're full of sh*t, itunes can absolutely go on a stand-alone pub server from which all the squadron ipads get synced. -

We had a guy get his stolen out of his truck recently, not sure if he has to pay for a new one but he did have to give a brief on Training Day about the importance on not leaving things in your vehicle. SQ/CC definitely gave him some sh*t during the brief too, pretty funny. -
Investment showdown -- beyond the Roth, SDP, & TSP
nsplayr replied to Swizzle's topic in Squadron Bar
This. I don't actually have the card but am thinking about it considering how much we spend on groceries. $75 annual fee but I'd make back way more than that getting 6% on groceries, let alone 3% on gas + 1% on everything else.- 1,190 replies
