  1. I'm not super-familiar with the details but it's my understanding that it's radically cheaper to move to e-FLIP no matter what e-Reader or tablet you choose. That's what sold it to AFSOC leadership, let alone the increased usability or the weight savings on the airplanes. A buddy in my squadron is intimately familiar with the numbers and did a lot of the analysis personally, PM me if you really want to get the full-up report and I'm sure I can get him to send it to ya on .mil.
  2. VPN for ipad = access U.S.-only media sites from overseas
  3. Your peace of mind costs you at least $75 per $7,500 you spend, even with a very conservative cash-back card that gives 1% across the board. That might be worth it to you but it is a real cost. There's only risk if you suddenly go against you're pre-determined spending and budgeting ROEs, which is possible but unlikely if you are principled and even that risk exists paying cash-only because you could suddenly change your mind about that and run up credit card debt almost as easily. Anyways, agreed it's not really a debate, just technique only. I do enjoy spending 5% less at Target instantly and getting 6% cash-back at the grocery store and 3% cash-back at the pump, who wouldn't?
  4. We have otter containers issued with out ipads but most people took them off because they more than double the bulk. I have an apple smart cover on mine and it covers the screen and that's it. We've yet to have anyone hurt or break their ipads, and like I said, it's cheaper for the command to by every flyer a new ipad every single year than it is to continue getting paper FLIP.
  5. ::facepalm:: on this entire part of the conversation, I regret and disavow my own involvement and encourage everyone else to STFU. edit to add: scoobs, you forgot the Spec Ops Fighter Pilots...highly selective, extremely secretive.
  6. I know what you were talking about, my statement that SF was not involved. No need for a pissing contest, you know what you know and I know what I know and that's all that needs to be said about it. Whether I'm right about it or not, it's imaterial and I shouldn't have said anything about who or what was involved at all, it's unnecessary. The reason I even touched on the topic of SF in the first place was to point out to the OP that SF does not equal to SOF.
  7. Yep, sure does. Generally what people say is a reflection of what they know. Pissing contest aside, the original point was that using SF and SOF interchangeably is incorrect and if you're in the military you should strive to know your own trade well enough to get it right.
  8. As you rightly pointed out, the Army played a role in the raid as well but I highly, highly doubt SF was involved. Those dudes are bad ass as well but what they do best isn't quite the best fit for what took place.
  9. Yep, just like Quantico is about that close to New York. I was mostly critiquing the idea that the op took place near the boarder, which it didn't, and that A-bad's location lends even more potence to the fact that these guys were pretty damn bold in flying all the way in there to give bin Laden the good news.
  10. So the approx. $400 I got in cash back from my credit card last year wasn't "contributing to my wealth?" I paid exactly $0 in interest, so no money was "put into the hands of credit card companies." Am I missing something here? And for those who haven't fully chugged the Dave Ramsey cash-only no-debt Kool Aid a good credit score helps you secure the best rates for mortgages and other lines of credit you may choose to take down the road. Not sure what's wrong with planning ahead for known factors...if you know you will at some point take a mortgage/car loan/personal loan, etc. it behoves you to ensure your credit score as high as possible.
  11. Abbatobad where the op when down is neither near the boarder with Pakistan nor close whatsoever to Kabul as a point of reference. Referencing the location of Abbatobad based off of Kabul is like referencing the location of Quantico, VA based off of New York City. Anything in the world on the same latitude of Kabul is east if you go far enough I guess...
  12. I wonder how they, with a straight face, entered the DTS statement about how the purpose of the TDY could not be accomplished via secure VTC or other similar means? This to me seems like the perfect thing to be accomplished via VTC if it needs to be accomplished at all.
  13. Friendly forces identification fail. SF not the same as SOF and SF did not play a role in the raid. To be fair the media and civilians make this error all the time (Biden did in his DNC speech) but I'm assuming you're military so don't make the same mistake. Geography fail. Yea, I definitely think going on the news as soon as it happened and was confirmed was the right call. Hiding things or manipulating the timing other than to ensure it was a success and the troops were on the deck safely would have smelled funny no matter what the reason. To me, the initial disclosure was as it should be other than messing up some of the details, but further leaks, books, etc. etc. are not needed.
  14. I thought one of the advantages of TSP (Roth or otherwise) was that it had the lowest fees period, even lower than Vanguard. I agree with some above on credit and use of credit...if you pay off your credit card (or cards) each month without fail they're a useful tool for building your credit score and either getting cash back (free money if you're never charged interest) or discounts (ie. instant 5% off at target where we shop a lot).
  15. That may be true. Legitimate questions, do you think there's any harm in telling the uncensored truth about an operation like this so soon after it happened? On the one hand there's been a lot of rightful criticism of the administration for leaking details to benefit them politically, but then shouldn't this guy leaking many more details also be bad? Would there be a reason to keep it on the DL if they just went in there and killed him on sight if the orders were in fact "capture/kill" and to follow standard ROE?
  16. I know absolutely nothing about stocks but did have a buddy in the squadron invest 30K in Apple about 4 years ago and has continued buying shares during the time period since then...needless to say he's done well for himself! Good thread BTW.
  17. Dude, that's a very legit drop, congrats to all.
  18. "The Brass are pretty hard-up about it" I think is an understatement. Apparently McRaven recently talked with some of the team guys who are still active duty to confirm the details of the raid were since the book contradicts the official story in some ways. Source.
  19. I wonder if that fact sheet is still accurate given that it made sense before that you couldn't roll in Roth IRA to TSP because TSP had no Roth option...just wondering if that will maybe change with the implementation of Roth TSP.
  20. I think you need to go out and use an ipad once or twice...like others have said, I'm not sure how you can "wear one out." On the other hand, our squadron crunched some numbers and it would literally be cheaper to issue each aircrew member a new top-end ipad each year than to continue to get paper FLIP. A new ipad every single year and that was the cheaper option! Obviously that's not needed, so there is significant cost savings going to the EFB concept and that's ultimately what sold the idea to leadership. The fact that the ipad is infinitely more capable at pre-mission planning and ease of use was not nearly as persuasive to the money men as it was to the day to day crew dawgs. Depends on what program your EFBs are under.
  21. Wow, I guess man. I had no qualms with their airport at all, I've seen worse/dirtier in the U.S. let alone in 3rd world countries. Not that I would choose to live there, but I've been to a several significantly crappier cities in the world and that's just scratching the surface.
  22. See Party, Democratic and their plans to raise capital gains taxes for wealthy people.
  23. Excepts are widely available online as well as the statements of the leaders I mentioned. What I said is that I can clearly see why the Pentagon et. al. are pissed, not that there definitely was classified published or whatever other accusations are being thrown around. Frankly I hope not since I don't want our enemies getting any sensitive info and I don't want to see this badass guy thrown in jail.
  24. Well as long as he had some guy of his own choosing look at it ahead of time...really? I can 100% see why the Pentagon, Adm. McRaven, Adm. Pybus, etc. are pissed because the book was written outside the bounds of the established way to write this type of book and reveals some pretty close-hold details of what happened, etc. Can't wait to read it though, it's next on my list and big picture, good on him for being one of the badasses who gave bin Laden a lead sandwich.
  25. ...or when you don't fully zip your flight cap pocket when you take your hat out. There's no reason for doing this other than pure laziness (and because it's a trivial and non-sensical rule anyways) yet every single flyer I know does it. What say you to that?
