If everyone thought this way we wouldn't have ships, cars, airplanes, etc. Human destiny and human curiosity go hand in hand. Just because YOU can't see any tangible benefit doesn't mean there isn't one. Since you've worked with NASA, I would think the technologies created because of space travel would be more apparent to you... NASA Spinoff. Most of those are directly pulled from putting man into space.

I believe it is the muzzle brake. M14/M1A rifles usually have a flash hider on the barrel. CA and a few other states see this as an evil device so they require that you have a muzzle break on the weapon instead. Ironically, the muzzle brake works really well and helps you control the weapon better during rapid fire strings. I guess CA wants to see where you're shooting from but they don't care about how many people you gun down because you were so quick and accurate with that brake. Idiots... Everything else should be the same. There are some AR-15 compensators/brakes that also have flash suppression qualities, but are legally defined as a brake. The PWS 556 is a good example that works really well (watch the night fire comparison video). I'm sure there are others like it for the M1A and 7.62 varieties.

So I ordered a Nighthawk Custom Talon II yesterday. They said the wait will be 8-12 weeks. It's going to kill me...

Col Kittinger did not break the sound barrier. He achieved 614mph which is pretty damn close at those higher altitudes. EDIT: I hope this guy can pull it off, but Col Kittinger's jump 50 years prior is still more badass IMO.

+1 on Joseph Kittinger. Going through that website, though, sure has a ton of badasses.

Ever hear of air pirates? Maybe it's a new AFSC the Air Force is unveiling.

It's a hold over for those really long shots... EDIT: To add posters...

Kind of looks like he is resting his finger on the front of the trigger guard.

This. You're going to have much better luck with a pistol that was designed for the .22LR, and even then there are still some hiccups. The tactical ones are all based off of combat handguns using a more powerful, centerfire cartridge. That and combat handguns are designed to be recoil operated, while anything smaller than a 9mm is mostly some type of blowback operation. Designs like the SIG Mosquito, any other SIG .22 conversion, Walther P22, and .22 conversions for 1911s change the operation from recoil to blowback in order to function correctly with the .22LR; but there is something lost in the translation. If you're dead-set on getting a .22 pistol that looks like a "tacticool," combat handgun make sure you use high velocity, high quality ammo (like I said before). It's going to be a bit more expensive than buying a brick (ususally 550rds) at Walmart, but it will save you a lot of frustration. Plus it's still a lot cheaper than your regular fighting cartridges; buying a brick of Federal Premium .22LR is like $0.02-$0.04/rd and CCI Mini Mags are around $0.06-$0.07/rd. Try the CCI Mini Mags, as they usually do well in the tactical looking .22 pistols. If you don't want to spend $7 on 100rds of the CCI stuff the Federal Premium bricks could possibly work. They are billed as high velocity cartridges, but their reliability in those guns is hit or miss. Some have had good success with them, whereas others have not. YMMV So in short, get a .22 pistol designed to shoot .22s: Browning Buckmark, Beretta NEOS, and Smith & Wesson M22 are all good choices. If it were me, I'd get a Smith & Wesson Model 17 or 18, but that's because I love revolvers so much. EDIT: Forgot to mention that Ruger makes a good .22 as well.

I've heard some of the tactical ones you're looking at tend to have a problem cycling. Make sure you use high quality, high velocity .22 ammo.

God bless you, sir. You are a saint.

I don't know if any of you guys are aware of this website, as I just found it, but it gives you prices of ammo at several different websites. It isn't all inclusive but it has a ton of websites and ammo choices to choose from. If this has been posted before, my apologies. Ammo Engine

I like this idea. And everyone can watch the embarrassment of the person when they don't fit. Call me cruel.

I'm aware of the differences between the two frames. The slide sits on a commander frame, and the pistol works fine.
-
Yeah, I'm pretty stoked. I've always wanted an HP. I have a Colt Series 70 1911 and a pretty old Combat Commander slide assembly that my father gave me. I bought a steel frame and the rest of the parts for the frame and had a smith fit it. It runs pretty well. I didn't have the flats on the frame polished so there is contrast between the frame and slide that I like. I also have a Duotone Taurus PT1911 in .45 ACP and a Para 1911 LTC (their commander) in 9mm, both of which I'm trying to sell. ETA: The grips also came with the slide.

Thanks, guys. I just won a Browning Hi Power MkIII on GB and I'm using Patriot Gun Works. I talked to the guy there and he was real friendly. They charge a $20 transfer. Anyway, I should have the new handgun hopefully by the end of next week, but probably more like at the beginning of the following one. Is the Indoor Gun Range the only range around Abilene? Is there any public land to possibly shoot on?
-
I didn't even know GB had that feature. That's handy.
-
Anyone know of any good gun stores in Abilene as well as ones with inexpensive ffl transfers?
-
Nice gun, Freddie. Yeah, they don't make the 520 anymore, but that won't be an issue for buying grips. The L frame is their new K frame, just slightly beefier around the forcing cone. The one thing you'll have to figure out is if it's a square butt or round butt (sts). The square butt will have sharpish points where the grip terminates. The round butt will have rounded edges. The left is square and the right is round: Just make sure you buy the right frame grips. Like I said, they are both technically medium frame guns so S&W's grips are interchangeable. S&W even calls them K/L frame grips. S&W Grip Styles Hogue S&W K/L Grips

Good luck with your choice and the snow blower.

327PD is a large frame revolver, it's just light because its frame is scandium alloy. Aside from just barrel length, look at the frames and grips. They will affect the overall size just as much as barrel length. If you want a medium frame go with a used 19, 13, 65, 66 or get a new 386, 686, 620.

I love S&W revolvers. I have six of them in .38 SPC, .357 Mag, .45 ACP, and .44 Mag. Is this going to be a strictly home defense and plinking gun, or are you going to carry it? All three of those choices are based on their N frame .357, the Model 27, so they're all going to be large revolvers. I'd prefer the extra weight of an all steel frame over the scandium alloy that S&W uses on some of their guns (although I've heard great things about it's strength and durability). That being said, I'd go with the R8, if it's going to be a home defense and plinking gun. I kind of like it's looks, even though I prefer a classic blued with wood grips wheelgun. If you're going to be using full power loads you're going to appreciate the extra weight. The benefit of all three of your choices is that they have 8 round capacities. If you're thinking about also carrying the revolver I'd get a something in the K or L frame, one of their 386 or 686 with a 2.5in barrel. They have seven round capacities, steel frames and they're smaller than the N frames. This is a 686 Plus, 2.5in bbl, 7 shot Like I said, I prefer an old fashion look. One of my .357s is a blued S&W Model 19 w/2.5in bbl. Unfortunately S&W doesn't make the model 19 anymore (you can find used ones on GunBroker), but on occasion I carry mine instead of my P220 Carry.

I'm partial to BCM, but I haven't heard anything bad about CMMG. In fact, the link I posted earlier with the former cop describing desirable features in a "combat" AR-15 has him recommending them. Let me know how everything works out. Midlength is definitely the way to go for a 16" barrel, and the fact that it comes with a free Troy rail is even sweeter. Within the next year I am planning to build a M16A4 type AR but with an A1 stock vice the A2 (I like the shorter LOP). I already have a Spike's stripped lower, Colt LPK, and Knight's M5 RAS. I'll be buying the 20" upper from BCM pretty soon, but I'll have to save my pennies for the ACOG, those things are expensive.

Heh, nice. I guess I didn't read the date on the post. My bad. Good luck with the rifle build.
