USAF Finally found a way to get rid of the A-10
di1630 replied to ClearedHot's topic in General Discussion
I’m not so sure. If I were doing MCO CAS in a hog/viper, I’d want F-35’s helping let me know if anything was out there so I could avoid or egress the AO. The ALR-69 is about 35 yrs past it’s prime. -

I’d tell the army to just write off the F-35 and use arty based on what I see. There is so much USAF pro F-35 fanboy bad info out there such as “well in a high threat environment only an F-35 would be able to do CAS” spread by inept generals. That’s crap. If it’s a high threat environment the F-35 will be doing SEAD until it’s low threat enough to do CAS…at which the F-35 sucks balls with wall to wall beast mode GBU-12s. I’d much rather have block 30 vipers and A-10Cs doing the CAS with F-35s in support doing what it was designed to do well…SEAD. I don’t want to be anywhere close to the passive AAA/Manpad CAS threat in the F-35. I’d rather stand-off and use sensors and help other survivable platforms hit targets. -

Yeah, I’ll need to disagree with you here. IMO the F-35 is sh-t at CAS. Is it the poor CAS weapons choices? Is it the pilot vehicle interface? Is it the community not having a good understanding of CAS? It’s all of the above. I can’t think of really any CAS scenario I’d rather be in an F-35 vs an A-10 unless the CAS was specifically taking out air defenses which would make it more SEAD. -
The article says 98% of cases are admitted dude on dude contact.
-
Would be horrid but for those of you who didn’t know, they don’t count a non-taker as: -Anyone who separated in ‘22 -Anyone who set a separation date So basically it no longer accounts for a bunch of people who might have otherwise stayed meaning these stats are complete sh-t.

Careful on listening too closely to “experts”. They do things like put B-1s in CAS stacks and say F-35s are just fantastic at CAS. I can saying having flown 3 types of A/G fighters, the A-10 is hands down the most suitable to support ground forces. That’s only if the pilots are well trained. Ukraine probably needs artillery more than anything else. -

I haven’t heard how well the Ukrainian AF is doing but there is no better platform for doing all of the above than the hog which can survive the low alt man pad/aaa threat and go low to mask (ie what it was designed to do) 500+ knots is rarely any more survivable than 325 knots (that’s the real level A/S when loaded down) vs a Mach 3+ missile. And at sone point to deliver weapons, the jet needs to unmask again, speed and hot exhaust is not helpful here -

Yeah sure, outdated mig 29s slinging dumb bombs would be much better. Hogs would probably be better than anything they have but like 99% of air forces out there, they want fast/loud jets vs the MQ-9s and light attack they truly need. -
I was at Nellis last week at a ceremony. Mask nazis out in full force including a fat shoe clerk that went out of her way to complain to management at the class six that I wasn’t masked when I walked in not knowing I needed one. Just insane. No mandates at Luke except in med group. If I need to wear a mask to work, I’ll work from home when not flying = pool day like all the shoe clerks during the pandemic.

Investment showdown -- beyond the Roth, SDP, & TSP
di1630 replied to Swizzle's topic in Squadron Bar
I bought 5k in crypto when it went down in Feb…watched it go to 8.5, now it’s at 3.2. Just play money but I’m not sure it’ll ever reach predicted peaks. It’s funny the people at the sq bar who lived talking about all their gains when they bought at 30 and it shot up to 60 are silent.- 1,190 replies

SOS is where pilots learn how inept *most* of the AF really is and why everything outside a flying sq is a dysfunctional sh-tshow.

Don’t you have TSA pre check?

Anyone ever fly vr-1355 the top gun low level? Specifically looking for where the steep mountain climb was filmed on it.

Anyone here have usaa funds with Schwab and now can’t access the non-usaa account summary on their website?

If the USAF can train a pilot out of a person they had to CONVINCE at the USAFA to go to UPT because they met min quals, then the USAF can train up someone motivated to be there. People all up in arms because it’s not how it “always was”

When someone drops mil leave say 6 months into their airline career then joins the airline 2 years later…are they still on first year pay or do they move up the scale with seniority? I know guys who drop mil leave after 1 week and I’m curious how that goes.
-
When going from AD to a TR in the reserves, what options do you gave with accrued leave? Sell or use terminal? Also, do you accrue the 2.5 days per month leave while you are on terminal leave?
-
Heads up to all thinking of retiring and joining the reserves: the current 10 AF CC 2-star is throwing a wrench in plans. No reason given, but as of now the packages are being stopped from even reaching the approval authority because the 2-star in non-concurring (again no reason given). One guy was hired so after 20+ yrs his last flight was a full up checkride and he didn’t do a retirement ceremony because he’d save it for his last reserve flight….now he’s being told no by the 2-star, no reason given to the hiring unit leadership. So TR soots are going unfilled l, USAF mussing out on cheap experienced labor. Another great example of our management in action,

About 30 min into top gun I thought it was going to end up overhyped but damn, the end was awesome. Great flying scenes throughout. My wife, 9yr old daughter and 12yr old son all really liked it. Def see it in theater preferably a imax or Dolby.

I agree in some cases Air under your ass is needed. I can’t teach BFM or air refueling in a sim. I can teach better tactics in many cases. I’ve never flown a heavy/crew aircraft but if the airlines can train someone to fly a 767 in a sim…why can’t we make a KC-46 pilot in the sim?
-
I disagree, we need to modernize training and sims are a great way to do it. I’d rather do many FTU scenarios in a sim than airspace. And yes, I survived the great “how can they fly a jet if we don’t make them do fix to fixes” and “no formation landings? We are all gonna be speaking mandarin”
-
Anyone hear they are thinking of raising airline retirement age to 67/68?
-
Correct…but because people are afraid of him they will not push it further because he “non-concurred”
-
The esteemed person who is respectfully against retaining current qualified 11Fs during a retention crisis is Maj Gen Radliff, the 10th AF commander. I do not know the official reasoning why he is willing to drive out 20+ year experienced pilots who are volunteering to work for almost free and fill available TR spots. I’m sure like everything big blue does, there is a good reason.

Oh it’s been researched. Literally hired under the program then as the package was being routed, a 2 star that doesn’t think retirees should be hired has staff stop the packages before they ever got to the approval authority. One guy hired was so sure it’d happen that he didn’t even have a retirement ceremony or fini flight. And today I just heard how bad my base/airframe are hurting for IPs. UFB
