  1. Here's another -worthy gem I found checking my webmail today...thank God I'm TDY. Emphasis and bracketed comments mine. So everywhere, all the time, indoors, outdoors, night and day. Hope the folks who live on base enjoy wearing their disco belts to sleep and in the shower. If I were back there I'd be choking myself...with my disco belt, of course. Oh wait, never mind, I wore mine to a rubiks cube party a little while back and traded it for a sweet orange sombrero.
  2. Appreciate the responses. Birdman, you know any reason why that house was on the market so long? HU&W, your advice is probably sage. I'd honestly like nothing more than a place to rent that's very similar to where I live now (2 br, 2 ba, great location, lots of amenities, $900/mo), but obviously, that doesn't exist in Clovis. Thus, I am trying to figure out some kind of palatable alternative, and at least being able to get around some by foot or bike is a plus. I take your gist to be that I will be disappointed no matter where in town I choose to live. Should I then look seriously at a place in Portales instead? I read your previous posts in this thread; if you posted anything about neighborhoods of Clovis somewhere else, please advise. I did just find one very reasonable rental, a sublet room in a new-ish (1994) place near the mall, available in Jan. Only roadblock to that is the owner is a Load (I'm a Nav; we won't be in the same sq). Overhead question--is this okay given the circumstances or just period-dot unacceptable? I would ask my boss-to-be as well, just wanted the BO opinion first.
  3. So the move is definitely happening, 2-3 months away, and I'm now looking at places to live in Clovis and/or Portales. As discussed before, the rental market isn't exactly stellar, but I found one interesting place which is now available both to rent and to buy. It's a multi-unit home divided up into 1-br, 2-br and 3-br pieces. Located at 1018 Fairmont Ct, close to the corner of Prince and 14th. I can rent the 3-br portion (1157 sq ft, 2-car garage, 2.5 ba I think, screen porch, fenced in backyard) for $1200/mo, or buy the whole thing (4455 sq ft, 6! br, 5.25? ba, lot size about 1/4 acre) for $275k. It seems there are already tenants in the smaller sections to whom I could presumably continue subletting. I got preapproved for a VA loan if I want to go that route. I have to move on this fairly quickly, so looking for inputs on how good/bad a deal either of these options really is, as well as the neighborhood and all that. I know it's not as far north as the "preferred" areas to live, but it is very close to many of Clovis' restaurants and a grocery store. Being used to the amenities and lifestyle of downtown Tucson, seems like this place may be as close to that (though obviously still a far cry) as I'll find over there. The house itself is 30 years old, looks decent in the pics on AHRN but I don't take those as gospel. I just found that it's also on Zillow but info there is incomplete and inaccurate. Anyone live close by and can offer an opinion? Selling price is about at the top of my range, especially as a first-time buyer, but price per square foot is very low and the place seems to have a big upside. Thanks for the help! RM
  4. Just received this morning... XXXXX, General ### has come out and publically stated we need to start complying completely with the New AFI 36-2903, Dress and Appearance of Air Force Personnel. He words are below: 1. We’ll have to follow the AFI… no morale shirts or morale patches … it’s the AFI, and doesn’t give us an out. (This Includes pen pouch patches) 2. ### is working internally to see if we can revise for the Fridays… but in meantime we have to follow the AFI. 3. This has been tradition for about 20 years… but most of the 3 and 4 stars said it wasn’t in existence when they started… started shortly after they came in… so not a real long tradition anyways. 4. We need to get right before Chief XXXX gets here… Thank you, XXXXXXXXX, Lt Col, USAF Commander, ### ### TAMInated, is it too late for me to get in on that 'NO MORALE' patch order?
  5. I'm in a very similar situation right now. Nav with 3+ years left on my initial ADSC, last month (after just over 2 years in my first assignment, not even close to VML) got notified that I'd be PCSing and cross-training, neither of which I particularly wanted to do in the short term. I went along--Service Before Self and all that--"knowing" that I could punch in 2014 if I didn't like the way things were going. Upon my return to the office this week, I found an email awaiting me with a Form 63 to sign which would incur an ADSC of 3 years from my grad date from training on the new platorm, taking me well into 2015 at the earliest. I'd rather not extend my commitment for an assigment I didn't want in the first place. A couple of questions: 1. Fine print on the form 63 seems to imply that I CAN'T decline the ADSC since I'm not eligible to 7-day opt. That's not correct, is it? 2. If I do check the "no" box, what happens then? Matmac and Hookemall are saying that I may or may not still PCS. I asked my functional (maybe a bad decision, "showing my cards" and what have you, but oh well) and he didn't know the answer himself but said he would find out. In the end it is his decision, right? Just trying to get as well-informed about this deal as possible before signing any more of my life away... Thanks, Rman
  6. All that is useful to know, thanks. Is the training done at Hurlburt? (Don't worry, I know better than to expect the answer to be yes.) I figured with the influx of people to town there might be a few bars or something opening up? Oh well. As for leave policy, I meant how far from Clovis you can go without taking leave--e.g. in my current unit, it's no more than a 6-hour drive.
  7. Trying this again, maybe I'll have better luck posting during the week... I'm very likely headed to Cannon in the Oct-Jan timeframe to be an AC-130H Nav. Looking for updates on the standard info--training, deployments, housing, nightlife (haha), etc. I'm single, late 20s, will be a junior Capt when I PCS. Not very interested in buying a house currently, would rather rent, and from what I've seen and heard the rental market around Clovis isn't the greatest. I'd at least like to find a place in a decent neighborhood and close to some of the folks I'll be working with. Also wondering what the local area/leave policy is and how people go about getting anywhere farther away than Albuquerque. Does everyone just drive to Lubbock or Amarillo and hop on a flight there? I know one guy on here has a couple of his own planes, have any others gone that route? Thanks in advance, Rman
  8. Just wow. I was in the son's original OTS class. His poor performance in UPT doesn't shock me, but I am curious as to the process of him (temporarily) failing out of OTS. Smalls0912 or anyone else there, did he just fail the Ad Brief and thus exceed his limit of busts (I don't remember how the OI read exactly), or were there other issues that led to his attempted removal? He seemed like a really decent guy and I don't enjoy seeing his name dragged through the mud, but apparently he wasn't above reproach in this matter either.
  9. Yep, floppies (of the 3.5-in variety) still play a big role in mission planning and operations in my community as well, though those days MAY be coming to an end soon. I'll believe that we're entering the 21st century when I see it.
  10. For what it's worth, I actually think REMF made good contributions in terms of explaining the leadership position, even if some are guaranteed to reject whatever reasons he offers. I agree with the above posters, however, in that he certainly hasn't "killed" this forum. Not having to deal with the Dumbness at the 'Deid myself, I anticipate reading the next story of superb shoe-manship with guilty pleasure.
  11. That plan does have some appeal. On the other hand, as a friend who's at D-M has pointed out, living with/near a bunch of college students may not result in great restful nights before your early morning flights... As ZB was kind of alluding to in his post, there are people out there who commute to D-M from downtown, right? It doesn't look like it's a bad drive (mostly a straight shot down Aviation Pkwy, against the normal rush hour flow). The Condos at Williams Centre looks decent; anyone have other apts/areas to suggest?
  12. I'm headed to D-M very soon (perhaps in just over a week). I've been looking at apartments there, haven't made any final decisions yet, but am strongly considering La Entrada downtown. Anyone on here live there or know someone who does? I'm mid-20s, single, making 2Lt pay and BAH (1Lt in a few months). I'm less concerned about being a stone's throw from base than about living in a non-crappy place in a neighborhood with some young people and some things to do nearby. La Entrada isn't right smack in the middle of anything in terms of culture or nightlife, but it is a few blocks from 4th street. The property has a lot more grass than the area in general, which is good because I've lived in green places all my life and the desert aspect of Tucson is not appealing. I'm also an amateur musician (keyboardist, rock/pop/oldies/country), so it'd be cool to hear about places where I could try to get gigs. Anyway, I know that was kind of dense. I'd just appreciate any thoughts on D-M and Tucson (especially from a CGO perspective), as well as on the EC-130 specifically. I've searched for 'EC-130' and 'Compass Call' and turned up little useful info. Thanks, "R-man" (!?)
  13. YES!!! When I started reading this thread about SF dumbness, I really hoped this guy would come up somewhere. Oh, he was also one of those aforementioned dweebs who got the SF beret and started showing it off long before he actually went through the training (he was still at Randolph, busy putting the casual Navs-to-be through full drill formation runs and open ranks inspections).
  14. I had been on the fence through most of this discussion, but the above information is sufficient for me to state: Don't join the AF. No physical contact and no situations which could even conceivably give rise to "forbidden...possibilities"? My experience in the service is limited, but I can tell you that sh...stuff ain't gonna fly.
  15. What about AF1 assignment as a Nav? I have heard that AF1 has at least one Nav, is this true? I'm sure one has to be a Maj/LtCol for that gig too, but was just curious to know.
  16. Yes, it is happening to at least one guy graduating Nav school with me--he's going to fly C-130's out of Cheyenne. There's also a guy who got Slicks to Pope, and I read not to long ago about the "last [AD?] C-130 departing Pope", so I assume that unit is also under Guard control now?
