  1. I second that that's just an old urban legend. I used to do backshop mx on the buff's strat radar. Those test sets are NOT leak free, and I'm certain I got exposed more than once, and I now have 2 boys.
  2. For the record, you guys are right... Definentally study for Staff and take care of what you got now, because if you don't make it for one reason or another, you won't have burned any bridges. It's certainly not impossible to study for both. I did, and I made both, so if my dumb redneck ass from Arkansas can do it, so can you guys. Vice, your CDCs are very important, but once you're done with them, they may help you make SrA BTZ, and then nobody will ever care ever again what your scores were. Unless you fail them.
  3. Hey dude, relax. I did exactly the same thing you're doing about 5-6 years ago, and now I'm a pilot. I didn't go to the academy and I didn't have 99s in everything. In fact, ROTC is the easiest route to getting you a pilot slot. True, the academy grads get top choice on getting the slots, but if you work hard enough, it's pretty easy to get one out of ROTC. You pretty much just have to be qualified and not an idiot. Here's what I did: I took the AFOQT, did mediocre 50's to 60's, had a decent gpa from going to school part time while enlisted (Avionics on B-52's at Barksdale), I applied for ASCP (I have a good friend who's doing the exact same thing right now) and was accepted. I chose my school, worked my ass off there and got good grades (the most important factor out of ROTC getting a pilot slot, BTW, and I say that because that'll also affect your commander's ranking) retook the AFOQT after studying pretty hard the first summer I was there for it, and did much better since I knew what to expect and all. In hind sight, the AFOQT is only a small part of getting your slot anyway. Tried hard in ROTC at my school, and then started all over working for what I wanted when I got to UPT. It's a long hard process, but it's totally worth it. Here's my advice: Don't listen to whoever has been telling you that crap. They're probably from the academy, and have no idea how the ROTC program even works. Call an ROTC detachment and talk to one of the officers there and they can (or at least should) tell you exactly how the pilot selection process works for ROTC cadets, if you want to know. Also, ROTC's pretty gay, so is any other AETC training you'll do, so keep that in mind when you get there. If you have any more questions, send me a private message, or whatever they call it here.   7. I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about the systems, but couldn't one manpad or RPG take out one of these Cessnas? What's to keep the enemy ground troops from just shooting them down? I can't imagine they're very maneuverable.
  8. I agree with brabus. I was enlisted and am now in pilot training. It's a long road and a lot of work, but it's definentally doable. Go ROTC and you'll have a better shot if you keep a good GPA and don't be a douche. It's possible out of OTS, but there you'll be competing with guys with lots of previous flying experience, and the competition is stiff. Also, you don't have to do a full 4 years in ROTC, if you can graduate in 3, or 2, you can still go through the program. I had my associates and finished ROTC in 2 and a half years. Good Luck
  9. I was in my 5th week of basic. We were out at medina annex of Lackland doing the whole warrior week thing. I remember we had JUST got out of the anti-terrorism brief and started that stupid 3 mile march where they pop smoke and you're supposed to duck for cover and all that mess... Funny thing was, when they had us run back to the flagpole and told us what happened, everybody thought they were f*cking with us. It didn't occur to me that it was for real until they evacuated us back to our dorms. Still hard to believe that happened. What an act of cowardice, makes me mad to this day... That's part of the reason I decided to stay in the AF and become an officer.
  10. I don't see what the big deal is... is it annoying? yes. Is it going to keep me from doing my job? No. Is it going to ruin my day? No. Is it likely to make me try to fly more often on mondays? Absolutely. Do I think wearing blues once a week is going to fix all the problems in the AF? No, and I doubt that is intention. Oh, and it's spelled WEAR! not were or where.... you do not "where" or "were" a uniform.
  11. I am going to be at Laughlin starting UPT at the beginning of August too, and my wife and I just had our first baby. He's 8 weeks old now. maybe you and my wife can hang out. She'll be needing some help and support, as will all of the wives i'm sure.
  12. To answer your origional question: What your major is, really isn't taken into account for the pilot selection process (Unfortunately). It plays 0 points into the equation that they use. The most important thing is your GPA. I know several guys who started in engineering, changed majors to business, or something easier, boosted their GPA's and are now in pilot training or are already done. So... If you're worried that ME won't count as much as CE, it doesn't matter (for pilot). I think what they meant by they're looking for Civil Engineers, probably means to take up the job as a Civil Engineer in the Air Force... I hope that helps.
