  1. I like the idea but I doubt they'll rename any bases. You could always petition to rename the airfields which would be a bigger honor in my mind anyhow. That's how the Army does it and the AF is all about trying to be like the Army nowadays... BF

I've got a 9mm and I LOVE it. Great gun. The real advantage to me is that it fits my hand very well and I shoot it better than any other gun right out of the box. I've got 2500 rounds through mine with no malfunctions. The prices are going up and mags are more than Glock but less than HK. BF
  3. I see that now! Looks good.
  4. If you end up transitioning to fixed wing the AF will make you got through the fixed-wing qual course. That will eat up about a year of your life before you even get to the ANG unit's aircraft. And passing FWQ is not guaranteed either - there is a definite difference in Army and Air Force flying. BF

Nice! I've got a DI MRP and it has served me well. BF

The paperwork isn't bad, your .mil ID will get you all your citizenship, affiliate, and training requirements. Print out the forms, take them to JA and go to Anniston! Don't forget the ammo while you're there. BF

I'd grab one now if you're interested. The wait is fairly long at the present time and there are rumors that they are starting to run out of the "good" condition rifles. Now, all you really need is your .mil ID and it covers a huge amount of the paperwork. The first one I got I "had to" go out with a local club and shoot their M1s. That's all it took to make me really WANT one! Go to the local JA and have the front desk notarize your forms and you'll be set. Grab some of the Greek ammo too - it is stupid cheap and is great quality. BF

Too bad all my stuff is worth a lot more than $200. I was thinking about buying a Lorcin - I would end up spending about $100 to buy it, $25 to ship it to me, then $25 to ship it to Sig. I would end up saving $50 with a huge paperwork pain to make it work. BF

I found a new program from Sig this morning... Cash for Clunkers - Sig Style! Trade in an old handgun and get $200 back from your new Sig purchase... Klunker You need to submit a sales receipt and a 4473, the gun must also be at least a .38 or 9mm to qualify. Sounds reasonable but who has a copy of their 4473 unless you go to the dealer you bought it from... Combine this with a mil discount and a Sig is a no-brainer... BF

7mm Rem Mag is a great round - assume you're not looking at the 7mm Weatherby Mag. I initially thought it was a little weak until I watched 5 moose get killed with it. If you were stepping into bear hunting in Alaska I'd look for a .30 caliber round or even a .338 for the extra bullet mass. Weatherby has a great reputation but if you want the "universal" hunting rifle I would look into the Remington 700. There are parts and pieces for that rifle everywhere and it is a solid rifle. Before you start shooting animals at 400 yards make sure you are capable of making good hits - it is sad to see animals wounded by folks shooting beyond their capabilities. I've been thinking about building a rifle up in .260 Remington - great round for distance shooting and based in a short action it would be a lot of fun... BF
  12. History Friday has sort of faded here... I found this today and it is some interesting reading: B-17F log from World War II. B17 Log Quick overview: Written by the navigator Flew 21 missions before shot down in Feb '45 Lots of hairy missions where they fought off the fighters, braved the flak, and survived the weather A huge number of accidents ranging from gunners shooting mechanics with the .50 guns to multiple bombers colliding while in formation killing all hands... Those guys were amazing to do what they did... BF

Nice! How did the mil discount work with SIG? My wife has actually said she's thinking of getting me a 229 for Christmas - she loves "sales" and discounts! A little .357 like that would probably melt the bad guy you're shooting at! The local gun shop has S&W show up a couple times a year with all their goodies. Pay their range fee and buy the ammo and you can shoot all their guns. I was interested in the 329PD which is an airweight .44 Mag. That was the only gun they didn't have - they even had the .500SW. They said the super light .44 was worse to shoot than the .500 - so much people were dropping the .44! BF

And the group of Glocks in the article above have been linked to bad ammunition. The agency had the first issue a few years before and the ammunition company took it all back but apparently some was still floating around in the agency's storage facility. Used the ammo again, gun blow up again. I personally think the 9mm Glocks (17/19) are the best 9mms on the planet - they are to 9mm pistols what AKs are to "assault" rifles. If I were shooting .40S&W I would buy a Smith and Wesson M&P. If I were shooting .45ACP I would think hard about the HK45 and M&P 45. BF
  15. Excellent book. One of my best friends from high school went through advanced SEAL training with him. When I read this book I called my buddy to see if it was legit. He assures me it is and that when Luttrell was the only one left alive all the SEALs he knew said that he'd be the one to survive something like that. He also said he had an identical twin brother and they would often skip out on BUD/S training by having the other one take their place. You can find a lot of YouTube videos with Luttrell talking about his experiences. And if you want the AF side of the story: https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/av/lectures.asp - you can get the HH-60 pilot's view of the recovery here. BF

I'd buy the Colt for a little more money. You will have to find a transfer dealer but you can use Gunbroker to find one pretty easily. Another reason to go with Colt is the future resell value - they will hold their value a lot better than pretty much any other gun out there. Also realize that Colt seems to build their rifles in batches through out the year. At times (like now) the market is flooded and the prices are very, very competitive with other makers. When they start to dry up the prices start soaring. Only a couple months ago they cost $1500-$1800 pretty easily. If you want to "build" a rifle do what timbonez said - buy BCM parts through bravocompanyusa.com - it is nice going that route as well since it spreads the cost out over time as well. BF

No one I know working for Uncle Sugar has a big enough pay check to destroy a .45 by shooting +P ammo. Ammo is so darn expensive and +P is even worse... BF

Beware border residents... ATF is out in full force looking at guns on the border. I guess the Mexican government is getting their wish. I got a call this AM from the ATF regarding some receivers and an FN PS90 I purchased through an FFL while stationed in Texas (Laughlin). They wanted to see the receivers and the PS90. I've since sold some of the receivers I had built into rifles to friends in the AF and ditched the PS90 after discovering it was much more fun as a full-auto gun and less as an expensive peashooter I had to pay the ammo bill for. I called the FFL I did the transfer with and he said he and all the other gun sellers in the area have been visited multiple times in the last month to six weeks... They also reminded me nicely that if I did not have an FFL I could not simply flip guns - buy a bunch and sell them for a profit - I could however sell them later when I got tired of them. This would be hard to enforce and even harded to prove - especially with today's economy... BF
  20. I've seen a OG/CC removed from his position for banging the head of OGV on base - both were married and not to each other... Same thing - those above lost faith in their ability to command. Maybe our leaders should be screened more closely if guys like this are making it that far... Dang - I'll have the months and hours to be a command pilot by the time I leave this job... But I'll have to wait 5 or 6 more years to get to 15 total rated... Spooky

By the time I went from here back to their site it was gone... Apparently you aren't the only one looking for .380 ammo... Maybe next time I'll snag a box or two and send it your way... Reloading is a whole other hobby! It is crazy the stuff you can get into with reloading. I use to do it to get high quality hunting rounds at a reasonable cost. Now I do it for accurate .308 ammo. If I were to do it for quantity a nice Dillon set up would be the ticket... BF

www.aimsurplus.com has .380 and .38 Special ammo. $17/50 of 94gr FMJ .380s and $14/50 of 158gr .38 Special. They are good folks to deal with and I buy a lot of my ammo through them... BF

Good to see folks getting some guns again! Even if they are old - my oldest is a 1917 Eddystone in .30-06 from the WWI era. Neat old thing! Sell that ammo! I'm sure someone would take it off your hands for a decent price. BF
  24. Information from the grapevine - please post if you get any better info... His Wake will be on 8 and 9 June (Long Island)and the funeral will be on 10 June same location. His final resting place/burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery with a burial date unknown at this time, and will more than likely be late June. BF
