How about instead of AUMF’s for Ukraine and sending them $33 billion more in aid, we knock that down to a piddly $23 billion and put that other 10 towards getting barracks and common spaces that aren’t infested with black mold?

Anyone seen “the Northman”?
-
We call that the Danger41 move.

Or how about the way NGAD was designed and prototyped quickly? I don’t know anything specific about that “digital engineering” but it seems pretty amazing compared to the old way of doing business.

I’d sign up for that.

Similar note I saw when I was DO at a deployed site and all we had at the time for precision recovery was a PAR. Nobody ever flew those and most guys would couple an ILS or at least fly with the aid of a flight director. Since that wasn’t an option, I directed the folks to fly those for practice (and for the PAR team to practice before it was needed). It was ugly. However, a couple reps and guys were right back in the groove. Flip side of that…I almost always fly precision approaches with no automation or flight director for practice. One time I made a series of idiotic choices before diverting to no shit mins and had one chance before emergency fuel and I’m hand flying it with no automation for no reason. Copilot asked if I’d like that and I sheepishly said that was probably a good idea. We hit mins and saw nothing…we got cleared the approach one minute before the field (Tallahassee) closed and went back to pilot controlled lighting (weren’t on tower yet to hear that). I probably set some kind of human performance record for most radio transmit actuations in 3 seconds but we got there thanks to the automation. Good times.

The preceding two posts sum up the entirety or retention problems to me. 1. Capitalism is the cornerstone of our society. Why would people with valuable skills not pursue more money? Especially if… 2. The AF values the wrong thing in the selection of its leadership. So much time and effort is put into making the next CSAF and glosses over on the interpersonal level that ultimately plays a huge role in retention. I don’t know a single person that has ever said “the boss really has impressive academic credentials, I’d follow him anywhere.” I know plenty that feel like they can’t relate to their boss and the guy doesn’t care about them so why try anymore.

Hopefully this Little Rock guy wasn’t quite that pathetic but I’d rather have a commander at least try to show people they’re valued instead of “let them go, we’ll just train more.”

Your guys squadrons actually honor PMCR?

Same. I ended up going to my congressman after 3 different FSDO’s all disagreed and were overruled by the FAA main office. Wrote up an MFR and attached all pertinent documents and regulations and got what I wanted (Renewal of expired CFI via mil comp). BL - Have your ducks in a row when you show up and BPT endure a headache.

I think if you take a 5 year, you get an extra $100k and $200k extra for the 7-9 but don’t quote me. No extra for the 3 year.

For the 767/other heavy drivers out there…is it possible to do it basically single pilot? You’ve got a copilot out to lunch…can you just tell him to sit on his hands and handle everything from the left seat?

It irks me to no end about the “just normal ops” line when looking at awarding medals to folks. By that logic, there should never be a medal awarded for any action short of self-sacrifice. Sal Giunta was just doing his job as an infantry NCO. Leo Thorsness just supported a rescue (that was unsuccessful and got an A-1 shot down). Tom Norris helped rescue some downed aircrew in a riverine environment well within a SEALs “normal ops”. Thomas Payne helped the core activity of Delta by doing a hostage rescue…pretty “normal ops”. See how monumentally stupid that sounds? I’m not saying the actions from various aircrew at HKIA are MOH worthy. What I am saying is that there was some serious gallantry, skill, bravery, and perseverance to make things happen. That deserves to be honored officially in the form of medal awards. I’ve got no connection to the C-17 community beyond riding as a pax a few times, but seeing what those guys did made me incredibly proud to be in the Air Force. Same goes for the Army helo guys, the Marines at the gates, etc. Massively proud of all these folks and their execution of “normal ops”.

There was discussions awhile back about pulling old S-3 Vikings out of the boneyard and turning them into an Armed Overwatch Concept. Obviously nothing came of that.

Here’s the full length interview. Simply incredible. “Wait until people see this interview. You’re going to get mail.” ”I might get some female.” JFC what a stud.
-
Part of me thinks that’s awesome but another part of me thinks JFC that’s stupid. Same as when the Polish, Slovenian, and Czech PM’s visited. Something happens and they get fragged and bam, Article 5.

Don’t know that but it does show on your SURF if that helps.

I just hope I can get some good, reliable information on Naval aviation from this upcoming documentary. Definitely don’t want to just go enjoy myself and get nostalgic.

The only advice I have for evaluators out there is to honor the booze bribe, you dumbasses. I was going to downgrade a dude one time (and I’m a huge Santa Claus evaluator so it was bad) and he produced a nice bottle of bourbon at the end. Q-1, no downgrades!

I always ensure that my collection of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps is prominently displayed in the background of my video conferences to flex on people.

This is why I don’t put a ton of stock into people talking about all the combat experience of our current military forces (myself included). This is a totally different animal in terms of combat from Iraq/Afghanistan. Also, April 15, 1953 is a long time ago and I hope people don’t think air dominance just happens in modern combat.

I’ve never understood the attempt to apples to apples AvFID to FID/ Special Forces to CAA. It’s a totally different animal to take some folks, hand them AK’s and tell them which way to shoot vice starting up an Air Force. I think FID is a great concept and definitely an area worth exploring and devoting resources to. I’m not sure about AvFID. Standing by the talking points about strategic effects and all that but I’d be more interested in seeing where AvFID led by the 6th SOS actually worked in the last 40 years.

Not that I want to engage with you but whenever I hear this type of attack I tell people to look up Chesty Puller and Tom Norris. Couple dudes that did alright even though they couldn’t hack it in pilot training.
