Black boots and under shirts looked cooler. Retention for pilots is more about money than anything else. AF problems solved.

Just a data point for guys that may be looking to go U-28’s after departure from an FTU (usually fighter guys). If you were having problems multi-tasking/decision making/dealing with complex situations, don’t go to the U-28. It’s a very complicated mission and requires you to be able to think on your feet. Not saying other aircraft don’t require that, but the U-28 is pretty high up there on that scale.

Honestly, if you primarily want to be a squadron commander, don’t go to WIC. The other routes will set you up better with a more reliable outcome. If you want to be a Patch and everything that comes along with that, including possible command opportunities but by no means guaranteed, try for WIC. I want people to pursue their ambitions and hopefully be successful. I don’t say this as a backhanded slight to guys that don’t go to WIC and go down the exec/ADC path to become a commander. There’s been great CC’s that aren’t Patches. There’s been shit CC’s that are Patches. BL: WIC won’t guarantee you are a good leader. It guarantees you’ll be exposed to integrating and being an expert in your MWS.

Damn, that’s pretty cool.

In theory, shouldn’t old guys like you be able to regain proficiency quicker than a new guy? Not hating, genuinely asking.

Basic AFSOC C-130 game plan. Big Blue buys them, and AFSOC slaps all the fancy stuff on them. Exact same for Light Attack.

He also didn’t just brow beat people because he was a fighter pilot and therefore better than them. He got the people working for him to buy into the mission and find importance and honor in their little piece of the pie. Aka, he led. I’m assuming you guys are referring to his time leading the Wolfpack and the famous story about getting the SSgt maintainer paid. That’s a good story. Other ones that don’t make Olds look so great are his alcoholism, extramarital affairs, and poor flight discipline that got people killed. That, to me, is the true story of Robin Olds. A phenomenal leader with some pretty serious blemishes on his record but was able to put his immense martial talents to use and leave behind an amazing legacy. Unfortunately, I really don’t think he would’ve been able to make it nearly as far as he did in today’s climate. I wonder how many potential Robin Olds are sitting in the front of a Fed Ex/Airline X due to the myriad problems listed on this and other sites. It’s pretty sad, honestly.

I can’t believe a superior intellect like his is having trouble getting promoted.

With Amazon Prime, how do you guys get audiobooks? I can’t figure it out.

I’ll tell you that being a Patch should not mean you just PA to O-5. I’ll also tell you that you do not have to be a Patch to be a shit hot tactician. Some of the most lethal aviators I know are not Patches and some of the most garbage officers I know are Patches. Don’t let labels define who you are in the AF.

Isn’t it joinT spouse? And the unwashed masses want pics. If your future wife is a 0, they’ll say dump her. If she’s a 10, they’ll say dump her and fly what you want.

CSAR to AFSOC? What do the customers think?
Danger41 replied to SCRIMP's topic in General Discussion
If you think SOF is some great panacea to CSAR, ask the Strike Eagle crews that flew in Desert Storm about that subject. I can history too! -
CSAR to AFSOC? What do the customers think?
Danger41 replied to SCRIMP's topic in General Discussion
Other side of the river would’ve started the invasion of Mosul early by some SOF guys and helos. -
I wonder what the report/fallout would’ve been if this was an AMC crew, lol.

CSAR to AFSOC? What do the customers think?
Danger41 replied to SCRIMP's topic in General Discussion
I don’t think CSAR should go to AFSOC simply for the fact that if they came over, I can see CJSOAC’s and other SOF entities hijacking them to do more of an assault role and not protect their rescue role. -
What the hell is going on with the SEALs?
Danger41 replied to Sua Sponte's topic in General Discussion
Personal opinion is that SEALs look for and value different traits than Army SF. Army SF requires a much more intellectual approach and the members reflect that. SEALs have much more of a macho, insular culture from what I’ve seen. MARSOC are great and it’s pretty obvious working with them that they are more in line with Army SF mentality than SEALs. I suppose it comes down to mission with the UW of SF, AFO of MARSOC, and mass literary publication of the SEALs. -
This is where the military worship throughout the nation has unintended consequences. We should’ve gone hard with the diplomatic solution over a decade ago and doing the FID type missions to augment it*. The government doesn’t want to ever just tell DoD “no”. Problem is that the military is a hammer but we need to paint a portrait. You can use a hammer to construct the picture frame, but at some point you need to use a brush. *If you want to kill your way out of it, commit to that. I personally don’t think that’ll work but have a clear end state and put resources towards achieving it. An interesting book on the subject is “War on Peace” by Ronan Farrow. The book worships diplomacy a bit too much in my opinion, but it’s very interesting.

How do you feel about your airframe and mission?
Danger41 replied to innovator's topic in General Discussion
On what airframe? I’d say what you see is pretty accurate. -

For the CV-22, their ops tempo is very high. They’re great at certain things, not so much at others. Their SOF specific mission is very important, but it’s pretty different from the CAF 60’s. For the rescue side, there will be plenty of “sitting around waiting for the call”. I hope those dudes never have to do their jobs, but I will name my subsequent children after them if they after have to come pick me up. *Not a helo guy, just a big fan.

But she was trying to recover from her mistake that she made after being in the AF for 6 months! The General who had served over 2 decades maybe embarrassed her! He deserves to be fired! /sarcasm The suicide thing is definitely odd. But in today’s culture, I would almost guarantee it was the “sexual harassment” that got him fired. -
This is a great thread to emphasize the importance of delivering actual feedback. Most dirt bags in your squadrons probably think they’re doing a good job. People don’t earn wings (or become 14N’s, etc) and get operational without wanting to do well at stuff. Not everyone has enough self SA to realize when they’re missing the mark. I love this quote attributed to Nick Saban (not sure he said it). “If you want to make everybody happy, don’t be a leader. Sell ice cream.” You think passed over good dudes would rather be casual acquaintances with you or have you tell them what they’re doing wrong and give them a productive way forward?
