  1. Sure, 1 or 2 may not join because of your/our bitching. Probably your stories will steer your own son away. But most wannabes don't have personal access to a disgruntled military pilot or are so enamored that they don't care, so they run blindly to the bright blue light. Once again, we overestimate the impact of our disgruntlement. The Pentagon just doesn't care.
  2. Wait, wut?
  3. That's what I think is being missed. They don't care about optics or messaging. They care about manning metrics. They've given up trying to keep you in. Those that want to do 20 and school and CC and NAF and 365s and XYZ will - raise or no raise. Those that don't, won't. They decided they can't buy retention so they're not trying very hard. If Maj Twelve Years is pissed and bails over $100, they don't care. They had already written him off anyway. They'll replace him with Lt Lost Way. Whether it's a suitable replacement in the real world is also not their concern. The sooner we realize how they view their Majs, the less offended you'll be at the slights. No well run business would think they can replace their middle managers with hourly unskilled labor, but Uncle Sugar is no well run business.
  4. And then they apply to be an Academy Liaison so they don't miss premium pay trips.
  5. Optics only matter if you care about second and third order effects.
  6. $100/mo taxable raise isn't going to change anyone's calculus. They know this. They've already made it abundantly clear that their plan is recruiting, not retention.
  7. Not calling out Tank, but a word of caution. USERRA is not the get out of jail free card that many profess it to be. There are requirements placed on the member (i.e. advance notice) and if the company can prove that you didn't comply with those requirements, you don't have a legal leg to stand on. I'm not a stranger to mil leave. I dropped probably half of my trips in my probationary year. Nobody said a word to me, and they won't to you either as long as you're honest about it. Don't be a douche, don't try to cheat the protections that are in place for us, and you'll love your new airline life.
  8. But you're another body that filled a seat in indoc that could have gone to somebody that would produce for them, and now they're paying into your 401K for 3 years for 0 return on their investment. I'm not arguing for the company, but the dude that could have been in your seat might be your bro that just retired and needs that job.
  9. If you fully intend to bail before you even get off probation, I think you're not ready to switch. Guys do it, the companies can't stop you, but IMHO it's sketchy and makes it harder for those that follow you. Edit: I say they can't stop you but that's only true to an extent. Urban legend has stories of D firing guys that dropped long term mil right after indoc. You sign something before class saying you have no long term mil orders planned for 90 days or something.

  11. Barring some crazy circumstance, the fact that any CC wouldn't call you in on Day 1 is absurd. But I also know some CC somewhere will play I have a secret to avoid giving you bad news face to face. Easier to hide in their office and let you check your email.
  12. "Flesh peddling process" didn't have quite the same OPR-bullet ring to it. I'm glad they're getting some make-work done, but nothing in that email sounds like they have a clue how to fix retention.
  13. Yep. VA can be a pain in the ass for a seller, especially if the appraiser screws them with a low ball appraisal.
  14. Well, you give a guy an ATP, another type rating, 800 hours of multi-turbine-PIC, send him to a shithole country for 8 months with plenty of time for networking, and expect him to hang around when he's done?
  15. I heard they're going to unmask PhD for Capt, so... chop chop.
  16. While an O-5 pension would be nice and I hope to get one, 10% of an 0-5 RESERVE pension is not life-changing money. $300-500/mo difference when you turn 60 in today's dollars. $23,000 (which is low anyway) left to grow from age 32 to 60 is $153K. So the comparison if you assume that dude goes ARC is $153K lump sum vs $550-$850/mo, accounting for 2% inflation adjustments in base salaries. An immediate annuity can rival that.
  17. That would be a different ballgame. And with your savings plan, your options are endless.
  18. You gotta spend something man! Go to Europe for 2 weeks!
  19. Yes. No effect on terminal leave. I chose to sell back the maximum because you can't double dip the way you could going to a civilian job and I wanted to maximize my savings as I jumped into unknown expenses and job prospects.
  20. I'm too old to have a choice, but I think if I had started off with the BRS, I almost certainly wouldn't still have a CAC in my wallet! The ARC will be the ones most hurt by this in 10-15 years.
  21. No full time requirement. It was triple what you owed as a part timer. Probably still is.
  22. While you're ARC, pay a little bit for TRS/Standard. It's good coverage. Between ARC retirement and 60, you'll have to use your employer plan.
  23. First problem is that the reserve pension won't give you 50% or 40% of your base pay, because you won't have 7200 points. You'll have somewhere around 5,000, so your pension will be around 34% or 27% of your base pay. As to your main question, you'll just have to model all of your assumptions in Excel. PV, FV, N, etc. https://www.tvmcalcs.com/index.php/calculators/excel_tvm_functions/excel_tvm_functions_page1 Don't forget to model healthcare expenses in your comparisons. Tricare at 60 is nice; make sure you have some plan between 38 and 60.
  24. ALPA is not immune from letting management slip in clownish contract clauses!
  25. Not necessarily. The reg says "commercial" flying. Mil flying generally does not count as commercial flying. Not withstanding a furlough, most airline guys won't do it because it's not worth their time. Those that want to do it already are as reservists.
