  3. We moved here in February. It is a good time to buy. We bought our house for what it was valued ten years ago. I see a lot of nice new houses south of Tampa. That also puts you about 15 minutes away from Sarasota beach. Only thing I don't like about those houses (looking down from 1000') is like most new neighborhoods, they are clear cut. If you try to live across a bridge into St Pete, be prepared to pay a lot of insurance. Think about whether you want to keep the house or not. Someone asked us if we're going to have to move again one day. My wife replied "I am not, I don't know about him". My kids have also been happier here than anyplace we have ever lived.

  6. We got the call over here at KPIE that there was a touchdown on the airport so we all go huddle up in the harden facility. In the middle of it all, up drives the mailman. Jumps out and runs up the mail. Sleet nor hail or airplanes being tossed like toys will stop the US Mail.

  8. Back in Apaches, I used to do lots of fly bys that were at 500' AGL and were perfectly legal. Now I am just trying to send one of or HH60's to do a static at Tropicana stadium for the Big Dill AFB birthday, and it takes involvement from every GO in the chain. One big event changed fly by's for big green. A fly by in downtown Houston. I had done that actually fly by for that even several times. The promoters would always try to get us to fly between the buildings. Me thinking that not such great idea, opted for 800' and clearing the buildings. When I left, they did it. 3 aircraft, 50' off of the deck between the high rises (even came around for a second pass). I was going through a aircraft quail at Rucker when it got splattered all over YouTube (damn those people). We ran over to see the videos and I was reading the post. It was then I recognized the Johnny Bravo language of one the pilots who posted the blog, as my own brother. That prompted a quick phone lessons in deniability. I phones and YouTube have changed a lot. You can't get away with anything anymore. And for buzzing the (fill in the blank), who hasn't. I want pilots to follow the rules sure, but I want them to be some ballsy bastards also.

  16. When we started using the BF EDM in Iraq(think Falcon View Kneeboard with blue force tracker), my front seaters wouldn't use them. So I made it mandatory for all flights. By the end of the year, I couldn't yank them out of their hands. As with all things new, there is curve where some are used to what they know and don't want more. I can remember reading a story about repeating rifles being introduced in the Civil War and how some Generals turned them down. Devices like this will find their way in the cockpit on a permanent basis. But, I do think it be highly dependent on the mission you are doing as to what or how much information you want. We are having issues with our Longbow guys already because there is so much to look at inside the aircraft, they lose sight of looking outside sometimes.
  17. I am currently in a MEDEVAC unit and I am trying to get IPads for my medics. They use protocol (think check lists) in treating patients. They are saying they have much greater access to information and protocols with a device like this. I am just learning the MEDEVAC stuff but it seems very reasonable. As for the cockpit. I would never want it flying guns. We already have BFT and that is enough. Too much already to keep you gaze inside. For flying FW or lift, I would like the use of one but not the full IPad size. I would like one like the Galaxy TAB. One that is about kneeboard size.

  19. I have read this long enough. Guys, quite giving advice that you are recalling from "experience" or what you know. What you are saying is generally correct. However, not as 100% as you keep saying. Fartman, always look up things for up yourself rather than take the word (of often well meaning people). Don't go to a forum to find out. There are very few people here that actually do a job that would put them in the know. PM me and I will put you in contact with someone who can give you the options.

  21. Sad truth is, despite your choice, much of your career is going to be under the control of timing. Think about where you want to be in 20 years. You may think flying is all you want to do now, but one day you will most likely be married with kids. Only wanting to be a pilot is great if all you want to be is a MAJ or W4. However, there is point at which you become a proficient pilot and may seek more challenge. Not to mention the pay raises (and the retirement pay raises that brings) that comes with promotion. I don't have any problem with doing staff work and being a pilot in command. As such, I get pretty much all the flight time I want. You may fly several aircraft over a career. Keep in consideration that times change. The wars of today may not be the wars of tomorrow. But in the end remember, you will be serving your country either way while getting fly. That is all that really matters.
  22. After working assignments for two years I have come to the conclusion that pilots are a different variety of whores. That may be disrespectful to the working ladies but there are not too many pilots who would not go fly something else for somebody else given the chance. There is a large group of pilots who always think somebody else has it better or is making more money. My thoughts are if you are happy and all systems are in the green, don't pulling off the throttles or seeing what "this switch" will do.
