  1. Wilco, M2: I contend that Gen Welsh needs to re-invigorate the "up-or-out" career path as the best for the USAF (NOT the friendliest for the individual). That he should do so by clearly establishing what the he, and thereby, the USAF believes is important for officer development, and rewarding such accomplishments by higher promotion rates for folks who accomplish those things. This ensures we have a steady stream of willing folks to take on the Air Force's toughest peacetime jobs. And it means those folks who find doing those things at odds with their desires should have a way to honorably exit post-ADSC, without breaking mission capability. So how do you create a sustainable active-duty system that rewards job performance and the 6-9 other factors he's bound to talk about? Should we tie that to increased pay and responsibility? How do you look a young 2Lt at UPT and explain that flying jets is cool, but he signed up to be an officer first, and after 6-9 years of flying, he'll be on staff/school/staff assignment rotation, if he's deemed "good", or he'll be asked to exit by getting passed over for promotion? Either way, he's not flying on active duty. Perhaps the current our org structure and C2 methods are to blame: that we need so many guys on staff with flying experience. Look at any MAJCOM or the HAF: where are the "sharp" guys now? A3/5/8 and the Joint/COCOM Staffs and the AFFORs and AOCs. That's tough work, and 96.9% of those jobs are non-flying gigs. How do we motivate those guys to want to do that work? We're all hopeful that Gen Welsh has some answers to balance personal desires and career goals and service requirements. I supppose the best place to start is "service requirements." We have long training pipelines, and limited training capability. 8 and 10 yr commitments mean we need a continuous influx of new guys in all MWSs to replenish those we send to school, staff, Palace Chase, civilian life and even the a-word. How would a Brit/Canadian system work with our current rated staff manning bill? What say you? Are these things even important to discuss? Or should we just cut TIB and call it good?
  2. Technically: AFI 11-301V1 2.17. Aircrew Members: 2.17.1. Obtain personal flying equipment (i.e., flight suits, boots, gloves, etc.) from assigned/attached squadron supply, maintain accountability and serviceability, and ensure availability for maintenance. and: 2.10.13.1. Flight Boots. The primary aircrew boots, as authorized in AS 016, are the FWU-3/P, FWU-8/P, and the lightweight model 700, 770, 790 and sage green 690 Belleville® Aircrew Boot. Lace-up zipper inserts may be used. Boots, flying, extreme cold, Sorrel Premium,Mukluks, as well as vapor barrier thermal are authorized for wear during winter flight operations at the discretion of unit commander. However...that said...no one I know gives any kind of rat's ass as long as its greenish suede-ish bootish footwear. YMMV in your unit, your unit's Chief-dom, MAJCOM supp, etc...

    Gun Talk

Was in the neighborhood gun store today with the family, doing a little post-chirstmas sale shopping, and the owner was arguing with a AR-15 seller: seller wanted $2000 cash, telling store owner they were "going like hotcakes and he could get $2500 easy!" Store owner said: "You want that much, sell it online" Seller: "I keep getting flagged on Craigslist!" Owner: "Use Gunbroker" Seller: "What?" It was laughable. Then store owner got my attention: "My customers know what they're buying and selling, they're responsible folks, I like selling and buying from them, and I do NOT gouge them or I'd be out of business tomorrow. So, I can offer you fair market for a used AR, which I will sell tomorrow for fair retail value, or you can sell it online." The gun owner left in a huff, angry he wasn't getting quick cash--in his mind double what he paid for it and what he thought it was worth.

    Gun Talk

$5 says there's a shit-ton of "unregistered" gun owners not on that map. Someone should overlay "gun crime" locations over the "lawful owners" map--another $5 says there will be very few dots that line up.
  5. LOL. "The impossibility of certainty". Shack. I'm out.
  6. I say again: rationalization of victimhood. We Americans are all born equal, with equal opportunity before us. Easier for some? Yes. Impossible for any? No. No American is predestined to crime, or poverty, or addiction. We are free to choose our path, choose our values, choose our behavior. Show me one "disenfranchised/disadvantaged" youth, and I'll show you the opportunity before him. ETA: BOTW: Iceal Hambleton

  8. Rationalization of Victimhood. Ugh. My reply: Booker T. Washington.
  9. Welcome and thank you.
  10. Only unprivileged info from SIB can be released to party in court action. Takes DUSD(I&E) to release privileged info. I doubt privileged info was released. Google DODI 6055.7 enclosure 5 for details on privilege... I suspect only the UN-privileged portions were released to the court. Lastly, if questioned by safety, ask for privilege. SE folks are being trained to NOT offer...whatever you tell them before getting an offer of confidentiality, is not privileged...including the AMC form 97. Glad Capt Foley beat the charges...hope he is able to set the rest of his record straight and continue to serve as he chooses.
  11. It's been said before... If I owe you $100,000...I have a problem If I owe you $6,000,000,000,000....YOU have a problem.
  12. I always told my guys "The AF will help you be present for EITHER conception OR delivery...and you get to choose half the time" They laughed until they realized the deployment schedule meant I was right... Consider: once you know the due date, get her mom or older sister, aunt, etc to arrive to be with her 1 week before due date, and then stay until your mom, sister, aunt etc arrives a week after delivery. She'll need the most help in the first two to three weeks after baby comes home. Good luck.
  13. Sorry, no it's not. I think it's still $150. Worth every penny, IMHBAO.

  15. Respect the threat. Counter appropriately.
  16. Yep. Done that.
  17. I heard that since companion trainers are so old and expensive, they'll just log currency recce hours in the co-located RQ-4.
  18. THAT'S the holiday spirit you're drinking...
  19. Are there any concerns if you access BO.net and FB via iPhone almost exclusively?
  20. Fixed. Simple answer. We could all tell you out personal stories, but you get the idea.
  21. +2: In the eighties, I went thru an AF-sponsored program where Uncle footed the bill...I was done in 41 hours. First flight: April 19th, check ride: May 13th. On nice days, we double-turned, having a quick sammich & an hour of pre-brief study between sorties. Get the syllabus, study for each flight, rehearse each major flight portion (preflight, cockpit checks, takeoff, air work, and arrival/landings). It can be done in 40--but budget for 50--as it's the instructor that determines when you're "ready" for your check ride, not the number of hours you've accumulated. Fly early in the morning, every day you can. As much as possible with the same instructor. Continuity and frequency are key. Good luck.
  22. How about Colonels and Chiefs? Do they "make enough" to "afford" mowing their own damn lawns? You gonna draw the line on acceptability? What's the standard? Envy...alive and well.
