  1. Sweet. That may have changed recently because all of the ATP school sites that I found on google had the unaided requirement listed. Another question: does "Sim Inst" time count towards the "75 hours of instrument flight time in actual or simulated IMC?" Legitimately I only have a little over two hours of actual IMC in a helo and that was on a X/C flight. The icing levels here are such that whenever we have good instrument IMC weather, we'd ice up into a brick in about 5 minutes and VRD use are not my idea of a DLO.
  2. Anybody have any experience with a helicopter ATP? The requirements don't seem that bad except for the 100 unaided night hours. I haven't done anything unaided over an odd 0.1 or 2 here and there since UPT.
  3. We have CF-19s that we use as well. The iPads are only for FLIP and pubs. Its about 30% bigger than an approach plate.
  4. In addition the autorotations that are flown in the aircraft are nothing like the real thing that was performed by the Minot crew. All of our autos are to a power recovery and, IMHO, the hardest part of an auto is the final flare and touchdown. Once a helo pilot leaves Ft. Rucker, they will never accomplish another touchdown auto unless they go back as a SUPT-H instructor or have a malfunction that requires one.
  5. That must be how all of those gate guards use the nomex flight gloves to check id's. It's pretty fiery environment defending the base from the retirees hair spray and cigarette infused identification.
  6. Slight thread derail: Malmstrom and FE Warren are the only two heliports in the Air Force but there is nothing in the airfield management regs concerning heliports, only runways. Our OSS does nothing for airfield management (or anything flying related) and this falls as an additional duty to one of our pilots. This becomes a problem when MAJCOM comes in for an inspection and hammers us with all of these downgrades for our heliport management (no FOD program, improper lights, taxi lines wrong, etc). This was never an issue in AFSPC and the helo squadrons did whatever was required to suit their needs, not necessarily within the airfield UFCs. Most of our wing doesn't even believe that we have a flying mission and CE has been unwilling to provide support for the airfield maintenance since the runway was BRAC'd in 98. Luckily we had an airfield management MSgt from the ANG that came in and wrecked shop in the MSG and the OG that helped sort some things out. Since the Montana ANG is transitioning to C-130s they're looking at using part of the shutdown runway as an assault strip and opening an old DZ on base. Needless to say the OG is not happy but they can't do anything about it. I can't wait for them to be doing NVG assault landings and the base populous bitching about the four fans of freedom interrupting their Wheel of Fortune. Even better if one breaks down and they have do do engine runs for hours on end. Edit: Too many fishbowls at the Sip N' Dip?
  7. I believe that the Scott C-21 unit is the only one testing the mini's as of now. Something about a waiver to not have the approach plate displayed in full size.
  8. So they continue to exert their control over every aspect of flying ops. FE Warrens OG/CC thought that a Huey performing 180 autorotations (required to log an EP sortie) with the doors open was incredibly unsafe and wanted them to KIO. Transient rotorcraft need Wg/CC coord to file a PPR and PA wants to do a news blurb on them. This has happened twice so far. The populous of missile bases have no idea how real AF bases work. We get noise complaints from people on base for flying Trans/EP sorties. FE Warren gets noise complaints from people living in base housing that was built underneath the APZ for their slide lanes. No joke, we've had people say that Malmstrom is the loudest AFB that they've ever been stationed at even though we only have Hueys and fly a few lines per day. And you guys think that AMC is bad...
  9. AFGSC is testing the iPads in the CTP T-38's at Whiteman. Those things are too big for our cockpit, I can't imagine how unwieldy they are in a Talon cockpit.
  10. Airport code for FE Warren AFB.
  11. Because we are run by missileers and they want to micromanage every part of flying ops. FEW is required to brief the OG/CC for every flights risk assessment. We need OG/CC coord to fly 45 minutes away to do instruments Welcome to Global Strike
  12. AIB is released (Link to Report)
  13. Strategic would be not getting your Masters done by your second year as a Lt. Tactical would be puking in the Wg/CCs shrubbery the day before your PRF is evaluated.
  14. It's in the JFTR under "refusal of gov't quarters" I actually had to show the reg reference to finance here when I PCSd in after initial qual. They initially didn't reimburse me because I didn't have a non-A and I lived off base. Always know what you're entitled to and be prepared to fight for it against dimwits.
  15. IG report is out, Some highlights:
  16. MAJCOMs can certify other boots "safe to fly". I know Rocky's are certified by ACC and AFGSC.
  17. FY14 Programs Announced
  18. How is that even a thing?
  19. There are UH-1's at Yokota, not 60's
  20. Well Santa might have to fly through the Chinese ADIZ depending on the results of his second list check.
  21. The IG or ADC really isn't part of the "Right Start" briefing on inprocessing day.
  22. As much as I hate to perpetuate the division of the athlete vs. normal cadet, there is something to be said of the potential decrease in quality of cadet that comes from trying to win NCAA games. This link from the Denver Post reports on discussions at USAFA on making it a 5 year college for some cases. It's easy to read between the lines and see that they are talking about athletes, otherwise they wouldn't have interviewed the AD or football coach. So many things at that place revolve around athletics. The place now has three gyms, one for normal cadets, one for intercollegiates, and a separate one for football players. If they would donate the money to support actual military training (shooting, field craft, flying training) then the cynicism and suck factor of that place would decrease by 69%. Football makes money and it's all that the leadership sees. The physical, fiscal, and time requirements to be a NCAA D-1 football athlete are so high now that the service academies should not be investing the amount of time or money in. Devote it to the other 70% of cadets and make it a better institution, not a better show of ESPN Ocho. Rant off
  23. The fact that OSI has to resort to these techniques is ridiculous. Every bad bit of press that happens, it turns into a witch hunt to show that they are doing something productive (gee where have I heard that before). It happened with the 2007 Honor "scandal" and with the recent sexual assault problems.
