  1. They still currently do this. We flew our OG on one of the MDSv1 required orientation flights for a convoy in marginal weather. He was flabbergasted that the flight lead briefed weather and for the inadvertent IMC procedures he briefed "standard." It's a different mindset. The good missileers get out or cross-train leaving the risk-adverse robots to rise to the top. //Slight Derail// Having helicopter units assigned to the missile operations groups is a huge clash of cultures. They see us as cowboys who take needless risk and spend all of their TDY money. We can't control our own budget and need to ask for OG permission to utilize FHP funds. Nearly every risk that they have in their job has been checklisted-out and everything is read-execute. Over the last three months here, the helo squadron has been one of the few islands of good PR, yet they still treat us like we are pariahs. We need OG/CC coordination to leave the missile complex for an instrument trainer even though the airport we are conducting approaches to is closer to base than some of the silos. Heaven forbid we go on an off station trainer or a fini-flight, those are verboten. The amount of scrutiny and agressive-oversight (its not micro-management), would make any MAF crew shake their heads in disbelief.

Same with all of the Peterson AFNET bases. Guess I'll just use my phone...
  3. Acting AF Secretary "Hard-pressed to imaging" CRH contract soon Welp, we're boned.
  4. They also used Helos in case the C-130's missed. The NRO just released a bunch on GAMBIT and HEXAGON as well. The Trieste II rescue of the third HEXAGON capsule was, at the time, the deepest undersea salvage operation.
  5. How would it work for the other half of the air force helo force? The army could probably take over the AFDW mission considering they are part out the same OPLANS but the icbm mission would be an exercise in bureaucracy. Army helos flying air force cops from an air force base securing air force missiles. Good luck getting anything done.
  6. With the Old Breed is outstanding. It was required reading for a college history class and I kept it for my personal library afterward.
  7. What's the difference between a Mercedes and a Porsche? Princess Diana wouldn't be caught dead in a Porsche. What did the egg say to the pot of boiling water? "I just got laid and you expect me to get hard in five minutes?"

    Gun Talk

I use a 7mm Rem Mag for my hunting. Ammo is readily available and it's a flat shooting long range round. It's a little much for a deer but a well placed shot won't waste too much meat.
  9. The only issue i see with that is some airframes that don't deploy (ie UH-1). If they do it may be a piecemeal selection of aircrew who do the Mi-17 gig, especially now with only a couple of pilot opportunities per year. We have pilots who are scrounging for MC-12 gig's but MAJCOM won't let them go.
  10. How much testing has been done to see if all of the extra gear installed on modern flight helmets reduces the margin for spinal injuries in an ejection? Having the extra weight of JHMCS and NVG's can't be good for your neck when riding the rocket.
  11. AIB's out. https://www.airforcetimes.com/article/20131030/NEWS/310300020/Investigation-Pilot-killed-while-ejecting-from-F-16
  12. I don't think that the Marines will give up their distinctive uniform without serious arm-twisting from the DoD. They wouldn't let the non-SOF Navy use the desert AOR-1 pattern because it was too close to MARPAT. Inter-service dick measuring is what caused this problem in the first place and it will continue until the all of the services stop caring about being different on the battlefield, that's what dress uniforms are for.
  13. I imagine most of the resistance is due to the ABU pattern that it was festooned with, not the two-piece concept.
  14. So after two years of research and testing of four separate camouflage patterns, the Army decides to say "no thanks" and choose multicam to replace the UCP. How long until the USAF adopts it to replace the ABU? Linky
  15. Thanks. Just what I was looking for.
  16. So I thought that this was the best place to put this. What reg or publication governs the releasing of pilot names in the event of Noise Complaint/Public Affairs incident? I know that the FAA does not release pilot names in accidents (ref Asiana) and the USAF doesn't release for accidents (unless the named dies), but where is this written? Couldn't find anything in the OPSEC regs or AIM.
  17. I also feel that the Hueys are holding up the Rescue numbers
  18. The Diner wins it.
  19. Indeed. Tough read.
  20. They have changed it in recent years. It's now "Option left, option right, draw, punt." Throw in a fumble every few series for good measure and you're golden
  21. They were in Allied Force. 2 of them were damaged.
  22. I highly doubt they'll fail the assessment. The -130's are quieter than the F-15's and nobody seems to care about them, plus there is broad public and political support for the ANG in Great Falls.
  23. It's more of a "the Air Force Academy has still has airplanes with engines on them" type of program
