  1. I could post a long and boring comment about other historical police organizations who, at the time, were acting within their authority and jurisdiction according to the laws of their government. But I will summarize the potential TL;DR with "Godwin's Law." We're obviously not there, but we, as a nation, have to be very careful about how we define our own future.
  2. From the AFI: In my opinion, any focus we put on unimportant differences that make us diverse like race, religion, etc, artificially creates barriers to mission accomplishment.
  3. I wonder how much money and how many manhours were poured into that AFI and website. It seems not even sequestration can get us to focus our limited resources on our actual mission.

Eighth grader arrested, suspended, and brought up on charges of "Disturbing the Education Process" for refusing to remove his NRA shirt when ordered to by his teacher.
  6. By having them EAD 1 week prior to starting their training.
  7. I was a little disturbed by the interview on the news today with the rep from the US Attorney's Office. In summary, they haven't charged him yet (which I assume includes the reading of rights) because they don't want to charge him if they're not certain he did it. They want to talk to him first to find out if he did it, and they can't get a good confession yet since he's still in serious condition. Because of his condition, they don't need to charge him to 'detain' him as he can't leave the hospital anyway. They do plan to charge him, regardless, before he leaves the hospital though. ETA: As much of a dirtbag as he probably is, and as much as I've already given whomever is proven to have done the bombing the death penalty in my own mind, if the guy is a US Citizen, he has the right to due process once captured.

I've been thinking of the 32x24x60, fire lined with the 10ga steel liner and the stainless torch plate, manual lock, side shelves, and the safe-in-a-safe.
  10. I've flown with the CA in some pretty noisy GA planes. It actually blocks out the noise really well. I like the ANR my Bose a little better, but the nice thing about the CA is that it's light and very easy to wear for a long time. Until I got the Oregon Aero comfort kit for the Bose it started to hurt after a few hours. Still don't like it much after 8-9 hours, but it is much better now.

Exactly why I've been shopping the Sturdy website for the last few weeks. Your comment about the pry bar immediately reminded me of the marketing video from sturdy where they show it not getting broken in to. That video (along with the crazy forklift one) are a few of the factors that have moved sturdy to the top of my list with Amsec BF as a close second. I'd love a Graffunder, but I'd rather spend the extra $5000 vs the Sturdy on guns to fill it with.

Like this pry bar? Or this one? Also, Smokin, I think this is what you're looking for at the entrance to your saferoom.
  13. Copy. Didn't see it there at around midnight last night when I posted. I can delete from here if you want to consolidate there.
  14. Extreme drunkenness and being asleep at the time of the thing you are witnessing are major credibility issues.
  15. This is more of a HOLY CRAP! than a WTF, but I couldn't find a better thread for it. The attached video is a first-hand recording of the explosion today in West, TX. A guy pulled his truck over to iPhone record a building that was on fire. Then it explodes. On a side note, West, TX is a favorite little town for my family. Any time we're driving from Dallas to Austin on I35, we stop at the Czech Stop there for Kolaches. Some of the nicest people and wonderful food. The families of that small town who were affected by this tragedy are in my prayers tonight.

New Superman trailer. A-10's vs Superman @ 2:20. Superman runs away.
  18. Sometimes I wish the menus at the bowling alley, golf course, and every other food establishment on base were still on traditional signs. They were so much easier to read than the flat screens that continuously display exactly the same information. Edit: and probably generated a lower electricity bill too.
  19. Back on topic... Images of a bomb fragment and the duffel bag that was used to carry/hide the bomb.
  20. They are all in the USA. They all have populations over 100,000. They each have close to a 50/50 ratio of males to females. They've each been in the news at some point. Finally and most compelling: Waco is in the same state as Austin, a university near Oklahoma City plays football against a team from Austin, and Boston rhymes with Austin. Strange how all these seemingly innocuous factors line up. There's only one logical conclusion. Osama bin Laden is having dinner right now with George Soros and Glenn Beck.
  21. Thanks for the reminder. I forgot it was doomsday preppers night... My 1.269 cents. There's nothing wrong with investing in gold as long as it is part of your planned diversified portfolio. I've made and lost money in the gold market just like any other investment. Admittedly, it is historically low risk as a long-term hedge against inflation. I don't personally see its usefulness as a bartering tool. In terms of economic disruptions, I doubt the likelihood of government meltdown, and if it happens we have bigger problems than obtaining useful currency. I have, however, seen minor temporary disruptions happen in peoples' ability to make electronic purchases during localized disasters. I've also personally experienced temporary financial issues due to bank errors and one instance of credit card skimming/theft. Because of these experiences I choose to keep a very modest physical cash reserve. I understand the cost of devaluation through inflation for that cash, but view it in a way similar to buying insurance.
  22. A buddy of mine just pointed out the dude that appears to be watching from the top of the tall building on the left. Could just be a race watcher observing the people that are finishing 3 hours after the winners, but certainly raised the hair on the back of my neck.
  23. Info about how the bombs were constructed. More info.
  24. Here's one of the best summaries of the day's events that I've read. A couple of initial observations. 1. When hidden behind the anonymity of the internet, people become stupid, heartless, know-it-alls. Perhaps being snarky or political is a way to create distance from the pain for those who can't handle it, but sometimes we need to step back and let the professionals develop the facts before we jump to conclusions. I really appreciated the example Bill O'Reilly provided today when he offered rare praise of President Obama's metered somber remarks following the attack. 2. Everybody wants to blame the person they hate. The most prevalent question seems to revolve around the color of skin, religion, or accent of whomever did this. One of the more compelling images of the aftermath was a middle-eastern man using his own shirt to treat the wounds of a victim. 3. There are still examples of everyday heroes. Not just people in public service, but selfless souls who will run toward the sound of danger, whether it be gunfire, explosions, or screams of horror, to see if there is anything they can do to help. There are also those who will merely gossip, cringe, or run the other direction. Both were present today in Boston. 4. Part of our nation's culture is glorifying violence in entertainment, but shunning it in real life, especially when we can personally relate to the victims.
  25. Another explosion confirmed by Boston FD at JFK library in Dorchester. FD also confirms that EOD is performing controlled detonations of devices along route of Marathon. Another IED found in nearby church.
