I just drove by that neighborhood today. It's older, but doesn't have that unsafe gonna get shot due to any one of the 15 drug deals on the street going wrong feel. It looks like a 3-unit home that's been for sale for almost a year. Reselling may be hard, and I personally wouldn't want to run an apartment complex while doing my day job too. It's also in the Parkwood Elementary district which is considered very undesirable. My recommendation is no. Although I don't know anything about you or your situation, I will say that you can get a very nice home in the $200K-$250K range. This includes very nice established homes or custom builds that go up in about 75 days. I outlined the neighborhoods in a previous post, and I will stick to that assessment. I think you will be equally disappointed by living a two minute drive from anywhere in town or a five minute walk from the "economic center." If you absolutely have to live in walking distance from the few decent restaurants or a "bar", check into the houses off Marvin Hass or Sycamore north of 21st. Also check out the golf course houses north of Llano and between Prince and Norris. There's a really good sandwich shop called coffee bistro on the corner of Colonial and Prince.
  2. The only good BX's and Commissaries are in locations with a huge retiree population. It's all revenue based, not based on who could actually use it.

  4. I like it. Here's a few thoughts. 1. Give people already in the option of staying with the current system or converting to the new system up until retirement. 2. Make the new system 1.5% of average top three years times years of service with vestment at five years (because that makes it more fair). Begin paying immediately upon separation like retirement with eligibility for BX, commissary, etc... Also to incentivize the swap, offer TSP contribution matching up to 5% of base pay. TSP payout is at normal retirement age without penalty. Under this, let's assume Capt Snuffy does his 6 years and gets out. His pension would be about $466 per month. His total in TSP would be about $35K with half of that contributed by the govt. I think it may work, but they might have to delay paying of pension/TSP to 55 or 62.
  5. Probably the same way all those other PT6's do just fine in the dirt.
  6. Quote from page 2... That's right, because you'd have to be high to think this would work out like they want.
  7. This thread is delicious. It inspired me to fire up the Weber and grill two 18oz 1.5" thick boneless choice Black Angus ribeyes. Also, I can recommend the WeberQ 320 without reservation. I purchased it as a gift for a family member a few years back and have cooked on it a few times. It's lasted for a few years, and gets really hot. Even though you lose some flexibility of the giant genesis for indirect cooking, I think it may sear even better than mine. It also costs quite a bit less.
  8. Something from the Weber Genesis series. I've had mine since 2004 and used it hundreds of times. I replaced the steel grates with cast iron ones about two years ago. The thing is an extremely well engineered beast and makes great food. No complaints.

  10. Wonder if the pilot was Q3'd. Well, we got Bin Laden, but I have to requal/check next week.
  11. And here I thought they just existed to give the recorder something to do.
  12. I guess vipers are out for the AFSOC fighter. You've gotta have something that can land on dirt. (and then take off again)

  14. NO! But I don't agree with any Army FW other than RPA. Yes - key. Yes 100%
  15. I'm thinking "Vectored Radar Flight." You know, where the controller does most of the work for you.
  16. So, I guess with the upgraded vision he can be a pilot now (I'm sure that's what his recruiter told him). OR he could transfer to the navy and suck poop out of boats. I think that's what he's saying.
  17. This Person There is this drunk This one Finally this guy It's actually extremely disturbing how often this happens.

Don't know if anyone's in the market for an M11/Sig 229, but these are the best prices I've seen. Link ETA: I know the M11 is the 228, but they are essentially similar.

You'll be in training for a long time. If you make it through training, you'll PCA to the squadron and deploy a lot. Use AHRN to find rentals, focus on the northeast side of town (North of 14th and East of Prince you'll probably be fine.) For night life, there's karaoke at Apple-bees. Not sure what you mean by "local area/leave policy." Travel is common on the weekends and certainly on leave. Lubbock, Amarillo, and Roswell are just under 2 hours. Albuquerque and Santa Fe are just over 3 hours. Colorado Springs/Denver are just over 5 hours. Dallas is close to 7 hours. Phoenix is around 10 hours away. People go to those places. Lots of people own planes.
  22. So, if I'm reading this right, the directive from the White House is to reduce the $550B DOD budget by $400B? What am I missing? Are they talking FYDP reductions or annual?
