  1. A lot has already been posted, but I wanted reply as well - I do want to hear the CVR recordings... What information did get out and how could it have been communicated better? I would love the 72 hour and 7 day look back histories! Do any of those factors also apply to me? Can they apply to me in the future? How about my crew members? Are there common characteristics that caused maybe, a lack of sleep contributing to the fatigue, say perhaps arguing with the wife? Details matter in aviation. The accident about memorizing checklist items has explicitly contributed to me becoming more mechanical with my checklists. The C-17 is an example about adherence to TO parameters, even when you know the aircraft can do more. I can go on and on about how every accident has lessons learned. I was flying with a student last night, at night, in the weather, who looked up and said "Woah, I had no idea we were in a turn still." We had a great discussion on how every pilot is vulnerable, and then tied it into the F-16 crash that was just released. Thanks for preaching the HHQ line, but it's bunk. The "I have a secret" game is robbing us fantastic airmanship education tools, which the consequences could be dire. I agree the system won't work if privilege fails, but I have a TS/SCI clearance, wings on my chest, and fly long days full of fatigue and/or with unqualified crew members. The system is there to be safer, let it be used.
  2. Good luck! I'd definitely go if I was in the area... And nice, conveniently fitting username!
  3. Have to disagree and say this is the root of the problem. We do need to know, and half assing the report and giving AIB info is next to useless. Case in point, the C-17 crash in Alaska. Safety's response was "we don't do airshows, that accident does not apply to us." BS! There are so many CRM examples, Halo effect, expectation analysis, etc etc (I don't want to get in specifics, mods feel free to edit) that it is obvious the SE office was wrong. While I wouldn't mind Safety School, not all pilots want to go that route - yet they still have perfectly valid reasons to wanting to know the causal factors and how they can apply to their flying. Did you never do Lessons Learned at the end of every formal brief in pilot training? Edit: Thank you Liquid, glad to hear you share the same views as the majority of us here on this issue.
  4. I know it's against popular opinion, but I really appreciate hearing Liquid's thoughts on these items. It's already been quoted, but saying you ordered the removal of that specific nose art will make it a lot easier for an internet detective with a grudge to vet you out - FYI.
  5. Historically, after wars wind down, the military downsizses. We're in the midst of ending a second war. Of course the military is going to be unhappy any time cuts come our way. A significant number of people I know still haven't forgiven Clinton for his military cuts... but honestly, we could have a trillion dollar budget and 1) we'd still be asking for more 2) we'd still be bitching if anything was cut. edit: Onto the article... losing the desire to win? Yeah right- but of course Generals get fired when they publicly disagree with the policy, same as in the civilian world when you go against your boss. I just don't see or agree with what he's saying in the article.
  6. I am kinda relieved that it's not just my safety office (two bases) that are full of this bafoonery - but it definitely indicates a larger issue at hand. It's something that the infrastructure is fully set up for, and nothing but bad leadership is keeping us from becoming better, safer, more informed Aviators.
  7. I asked, was told it didn't apply to the kind of flying we do in AETC and thus would be unable to get a copy. Haven't seen, no briefing, and we could but about two years ago Safety went into a shut in with a major need to know justification thus inhibiting the ability to get safety reports. However,I believe this is leadership dependent, just very frustrating - not sure what HHQ guidance they were given (after the F-22 crash, was SIB was leaked which led to the settlement?)
  8. On a more hilarious note, this happened: https://www.vance.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123368125 Next up, SFS leaving black bags around base to see who calls in a bomb threat.
  9. It's colloquial, everyone knows the term Gucci relates to the KC-10 here -
  10. Fortunately, you won't need twice the -135s to replace the KC-10 capability. The limit is more booms in the air, not total offload capability - IIRC the average offload for tankers is around 80k worth of gas. While I admit I love refueling from KC-10s A LOT more then KC-135s, we will eventually adapt as we always have. Here is a great article on future tanker needs. The -10 excels at strategic bombing support and airlift+tanker combinations, but it can be replaced. https://www.lexingtoninstitute.org/library/resources/documents/Defense/modernizing-aerial-refueling-fleet.pdf edit: We would be MUCH better keeping KC-10s, don't get me wrong, but if the budget cuts force extreme measures, especially with the war draw downs, I could see the -10 going by the wayside.
  11. Anything happen to the crew?
  12. Is it ever viable to not talk to the SIB (or anyone) until the CDI/AIB has concluded?
  13. Yeah, we showed up Tuesday morning for the Commendants Challenge (was really hoping that was canceled) and told we were graduating the next day. The SECAF gubment shutdown memo was briefed as the validating reason (no TDYs other then war or to protect life/property) so we all went home Wednesday. We were supposed to graduate Friday, so it was only 2 days earlier, and we all got credit.
  14. I remember reading somewhere the desired take rate was 65%, on the surface level 62% doesn't seem that bad. Wonder what the desired/planned was for each community?
  15. As of tonight, I'm getting these two pages when I try to go to the forums main page. I'm using Firefox 23.0.1 on OS X 10.6.8 And when I click "Why was this page blocked?"
  16. We won't go, and Obama saves face that he wanted to act, but Congress wouldn't let him.
  17. Ok I'll repost it. Currently at SOS, briefed by the AU/CC 3 star... he gave us a preview and told us it's coming. The whole system is changing, not simply a masking of whatever, but from my memory: 1) SOS being shortened to 5 weeks because of the 100% requirement 2) SOS Correspondence eligibility potentially moving until after in residence criteria has passed (have heard this one for a while) 3) Promotion boards will require a certain amount of credits instead of mandatory PME completion. PME in res will fulfill required credits for that perspective board, however if you got a Masters in say, International Security Studies, and a PME class is International Security, you will get PME credit hours for taking that Masters class 4) He said a lot of the senior leaders think the AAD should be masked until the O-6 board, however gave no indication on how Gen Welsh thought about that or what direction they were going, but hinted at changes for it. That's all I can remember right now...
  18. edit out
  19. Enlisted creativity while flying isn't fun until they tell you "Don't mind the burning smell, we're soldering back here."
  20. This!
  21. I'm voting presidential pardon of him and Snowden in 10-15 years. Old Lead Gitmo prosecutor says 8-8.5 years before parole. https://twitter.com/...188695833280512
  22. ^I have no idea what you're actually criticizing... slackline? Dems? The media? ...colored fellas?
  23. I'm agreeing with slackline on this. I care as much about this picture as I do the Mission Accomplished GWB picture. Next.
  24. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Saeed_al-Sahhaf#Post-war_life Seems to be doing alright
  25. I think it's funnier when people don't realize it, a la https://literallyunbelievable.org/
