Effect of simulator use on Pilot/Nav Training
moosepileit replied to abmwaldo's topic in General Discussion
You don't need to fly everything in the jet. You can't build a pilot in a simulator. -
OKC getting hammered again now.

Butters, GNEs come from manual input/edit mistakes crossing clearance changes, also. Yes, if uplinked, fewer of those errors should happen. In my present experience, few changes near coast out are uplinked, so far. Ops procedures and training should prevent all of the GNEs. IF the USAF was the "company" then all of us in all airframes and commands would have been using the same procedures over the years. It's gotten better in the last 6-9 years. Flying it both civilian and military were eye opening differences, regardless of the technology installed and used. Any pilot union that hasn't inked 2 pilots now, when it's cheaper and easier than it will be when the aircraft are for sale are missing out. I don't see the benefit with aging aircrew and lots of paying passengers and customers, myself. You don't gain payload, you just cut overhead. But, once you can balance paying for the technology, game on. With the growth in technology, I bet the same, "on the drawing board" single pilot jets can flip a switch and become UAVs. May just need a pilot to handle the taxiing for a while longer than the flying. Doesn't the 777 already have the deadman installed? on the ND there will be a pop up saying "Pilot Response" and to make that go away the pilots usually twist the heading bug a few degrees. If there is no response a loud alarm is set off. Even on data link, South Africa had me checking in every 30 minutes or so via voice last year, seeming just to prove we were awake.

At least "Moose" should know the route. Our radios and interphone are ok, not great. Real problem is the upgrade process (MPD) that watered down traditional OTJ co-pilot seasoning. IFM vs. old school charts and cfp planning didn't help either. Go into Hong Kong for the 169th time with your day job company, then watch the Reach crew melt down trying the arrival that you briefed them, including the R/T isms...

Former USAF pilot impersonates airline pilot
moosepileit replied to Steve Davies's topic in Squadron Bar
For a second I thought this was going the direction of a civilian-only pilot vs. military only pilot fight, ala every other flight forum on the interwebs. Thank god it's just a good, though maybe too soon, "my MDS is cooler than yours, hence I'm cooler than you" quibble. -
Surf70, guess the airshow sequester has freed up your weekends to post here rather than bug pilots in public.

Trying to flare into the zone? That's a joke, right? Your aft mains should touch down where your proper HUD picture had your sightline at 50' when you started to flare with power. Works 3/4 or full flap, but full flap is easier- you get 50% more spoilers biased up to help use enough power to have a stable powered lift setting with pitch hold for your airspeed. Weak pilots aim at the front of the landing zone because they are not confident in an accurate flare without floating out the back of the zone. Since an under flare with not enough power added fast enough can lose over 100' from where you thought you would touchdown, you can be short. 3/4 flap has a flare distance, and does not require a HUD. Full flap assaults need only the 500' zone plus ground roll. No HUD should be no big deal, still a big jet to fly backside.

1000' short isn't likely a case of the sucks. But, you knew that... Bet it will read as a chain of unbroken events. "Love", oh, that's awesome of you. PM me for some letters of rec. Always need more bulletproof types around.

Wonder if the crew's last sim instructors are surprised or not. Can't tell the time from the notam to even guess if wx was a factor. My only CAT IIs to mins that looked just like the sim set to mins were Rwy 1 at Dover. You can hate on the stereotypes all you'd like, but some kids are pretty quick with the stones. Go ahead, you missed a few.

Android? Avare. TFRs and Free. Fltplan.com. Good catch all. AOPA? FlyQ Weather? NOAA/ADDS and Duats Quick pattern flight? FAA notam site Radius tool. All on my Atrix2. Tablets have better battery life than phones with heavy use. Edit to add- want to geek out? NGA Phaero has a droid app. An old sectional still helps to find a freq to see if the MOA or other airspace is hot or cold if you don't want to intrude or get violated. Of course, the basic stuff browse through BODN.

We cannot at this point know who knew what and when. What we seem to know is the fugitive was found by someone that took care of and looked after their property. They noticed something different about their boat, and walla. Says a lot about how much $ and energy you can waste vs. people just being smart about how they go about their day. You have one survivor tag the perp from a picture, and one property owner see something change after a day sheltering in place. Armchair- I can see the door to door including clearing in hot pursuit, but even the best of intentions will get a deserved scrutiny. Glad to see they read a citizen their rights. Not glad to see it's not a death-sentence state. Doubt gun laws would have mattered to the pair. Smells like big fish to fry and lots of fingers to cross-point in the coming weeks. It didn't take a hail of bullets from MRAPs, helos and UAVs to catch the guy- did it? Whatever the security before hand, it didn't stop the act.

Man Sentenced to 30 Months for Lasing Aircraft
moosepileit replied to GovernmentMan's topic in General Discussion
Having been lased twice in the military world and another time in civilian int'l flying- make an example of those caught. It is the same as trying to open a door of an airliner in flight or trying to get into the cockpit- You are diverting the entire attention of the flight crew. Would you point a laser dot at a police officer? You are starting what can be a fatal chain of events with your interruption. The flight crew can't know if that is a key chain toy or a weapon. We have had folks injured, knowing that makes for doubt on whether to just duck inside and press or react otherwise. LEPs are not the solution, but one way to get free sunglasses again, I guess.- 28 replies

C-17 burns the better part 3000 gallons/hour for it's lifetime. That is most all of the OPR-type "cost" that I've seen, and wondered where the markup was for the labor involved keeping the lights on back home. I know what gets charged to the customers, it is no where near the number in the article. I assume someone took base budgets, divided by airframe type and flying hours, and came up with some palatable number- which makes us laugh. Not as much as the new Vance SUPT patch, but it was nice to laugh twice in the same browse of BODN.

There are always 1 or 2 of the ns "role" players on active boards. They serve a purpose, in a way. My free rights lose some freedom when they interfere with yours. How does owning any firearm interfere with you, unless it is used in a criminal act? Is there a simple majority of firearms or their owners doing so? Have 51% of any type of legal weapon assaulted someone? If so, a vote might be in order. If not, our voted representatives have bigger fish left unfried. I'd worry more about voting, as stated. There are lots of funny quotes on legalized theft of your hard earned money, when your side has the loss. Registration begins a historically bad slippery slope. Doesn't mean the NICS can't be improved, for those that chose that route of purchase through an FFL dealer. I guess you could tatoo some number on my arm showing anyone that needs to see it that I am "registered" properly.

Each FSDO seems to have at least 1 mil-competent inspector. If you can handle the paperwork and match schedules, it is low-pain for active mil IPs to redo their 2 year CFI. Free. 2 hour roundtrip vs. many more online, for me.

Being a group or wing exec would show you the inner workings of the life of an O-6 up. Including the impacts with their families. Since it is no longer acceptable to have a goal of maxing out as an O-5 Sq/CC any longer, seeing behind the curtain for more than a glance is a good thing. When I started 20 years ago, that was a fine goal- whether shoe or wearing wings. That has changed. My .02. I was a Group exec as an O-3, right when the Comm Officers' career field lost their traditional broadening exec assignments/PCAs. It would be interesting to see what folks do AFTER having been an exec above the Sq level. I bet they rocket up or rocket out with few between.
