this is the root cause of our disagreement. putin is VERY rational. he's been telling the west since 2008 what would happen if we seduce ukraine into nato. the CIA forcasted exactly what he'd do in the leaked mid 2010 "no means no" memo. if he wasn't rational then that CIA analysis wouldn't have come true.
