  1. Disclaimer: I only know what is posted in the article. https://rt.com/news/meteorite-crash-urals-chelyabinsk-283/ The article claims that Russian air defenses shot down at least one meteor. If so, this would be impressive considering the speed the object was probably traveling at and the very short (presumably) window that would exist to identify, track, and engage it. The article doesn't say what weapon was used to hit it either. IF this proves to be true, this poses some interesting questions about Russian capability to destroy targets coming from space at high speeds (MIRVs).
  2. AMR, US Airways to merge. In a related matter, am I the only guy who hates the new AA livery? https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ap-sources-american-airlines-us-004018969.html
  3. HANS BRIX!! AWWW NAWWW!
  4. Altus and other FTUs? Perhaps they are talking about a freeze on upgrade TDYs? If they are trying to cut off "advanced" training to save "basic" pilot training, that is not really sustainable, unless they tell every single IP at DLF, CBM and END that they can't separate or PCS indefinitely. From a broader point of view it really seems like the AF is trying to do short-term triage to address something that could very well be the new reality for the foreseeable future. They are really assuming (I think) that this sequestration thing is temporary and will go away. They can't just TURN OFF schools permanently, at least not essential ones like pilot training. The pipeline needs to be necked down sure, but simply turning off the tap will have cascading effects for the entire service for exponentially longer than any "temporary" stand-down.
  5. No sense in doing it now, enjoy your time off while you have it. Wait until you're eligible for TA, because paying for one of these bullshit degrees out of pocket is a colossal waste. You'll have plenty of time while you are casual or deployed.
  6. Maybe they are popup/coloring books?
  7. I heard they are going to implement waist measurements for insurance applications
  8. I love a good nanny state. All my worries about the decisions I might have to make about my own well being are just melting away!
  9. I swear some guys are worse than women bitching about what other people wear. WHO CARES? There's enough stupidity that actually MATTERS that it's not worth the time and brain bites trying worrying about what some other person in some other career field gets to wear. Are you really that sensitive that someone else getting a badge that kinda looks like wings keeps you up at night?
  10. I'm just speaking for AMU, I have no experience with other "schools". I was an IP in the E-8 and it got me nothing. You're right that SOS via correspondence gets you nothing either, has to be in-res.
  11. Nothing for UPT or any flying related courses (unless you're an ABM). SOS will get you 3 credits (one elective class) at AMU.
  12. Not sure about the 190s, but I know that at Messerschmitt has issued at least three new "Werk Numbers" to new-production Me-262 airframes, picking up where WWII production left off, basically same production run with a 50 year gap. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Me_262
  13. Best piece of advice I got as a young LT: "Don't do blue". This was from one of my ROTC instructors who was a cop in his previous life. According to him, the relationships that senior leaders take part in get a lot of air time because of the high profile people involved, but this goes on up and down the whole force, and for every 20+ relationships he saw, MAYBE one out of those worked out well. Most of them end up with a messy breakup, and then every day at work is fun and awkward. That's even if you don't get busted for frat.
  14. So say they do pull up data plates from otherwise junk planes in Burma-- is it fraudulent to attach that to another airplane, or would the "new" airplane be considered a repaired version of the plane the plate came from? I don't really know a whole lot about the warbird market, so I'm ignorant as to what is considered "genuine". I know there's a difference between "genuine" and "original" but beyond that, I'm clueless.
  15. OOOOOOOOH boy I really want to say some shit I probably shouldn't!
  16. You've got it all wrong-- they will hire the civilians to fly so active duty guys can focus all their time on their ground jobs without having to worry about needing to fly!
  17. You're referring to Dynamic Aviation. One of our recently gray beards got a gig flying for them. Aside from the fact that they are civilians there is no difference in what they do vs other ISR assets.
  18. Don't be so sure. I researched this a bit at SOS. There has been a lot of thought about civilianizing a LOT of flying. UPT instruction, mobility, and ISR are all potential targets. Sims are already instructed by civilians, and as already highlighted, there are already civilians flying USAF training jets at P-cola.
  19. Interesting. I didn't even know about the data plate thing, but it makes sense.
  20. I might actually have to buy an HBO subscription. BoB and The Pacific were both outstanding. I can't wait for this one!
  21. It might prove they were right, but data plates don't pay the bills. This is a treasure hunt, not an archaeological dig.
  22. I coulda SWORE there was a thread on this topic already, but TFSF is coming up dry. Anyway, They've started digging in Burma, and the initial look isn't so good. I'm hoping they find something, but even IF there were airplanes buried out there, we all know how well the jungle tends to treat metal.
  23. The ones they sell in Chania?
