C-17 Pilot Charged in Training Jump Death
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to Fifty-six & Two's topic in General Discussion
RAB-- I echo everyone else's condolences for your loss. I have no doubt that every single person on this forum views Sgt Campion's death as a tragedy; however, that does not mean that a crime was committed. I don't know Capt. Foley, but I can guarantee you that he wanted the drop to go without a single injury, let alone someone losing their lives. Unfortunately the business we are in (both the aircrew guys and the ground types) carries a certain level of inherent risk. We assume that risk every time we close the door/canopy on the jet, every time we pack our gear, and every time we execute our tasked mission. It is a sad reality that accidents occasionally happen. Accidents do not equate to crimes. If that were the case, every person who commits fratricide would face criminal prosecution. Sgt Campion's death was a tragedy, but not a crime. Capt Foley will have to live with the fact that one of the people he was responsible for did not get to go home. This does not mean that Capt Foley acted with malice or in any other way that could be considered criminal. This sounds like a clear cut case of a training accident. -
I sent an email to Jim. Hopefully he can help shelter some of the stuff. If any of you are able to spirit away memorabilia, Jim might be able to provide a home for it.

It's a shame to see that tradition gone to waste. I have a very close friend who is a self funded, self motivated, completely independent historian of USAF, and particularly UPT heritage. He has class patches from nearly every single class from every single UPT base dating back into the early 70s and earlier. Most of these patches are proudly shown on his website. He's always on the hunt for more stuff to add to his collection, and if anyone is interested I can put you in touch with him.

I heard they will be banning lotion sales at the Died

Don't you have a watch to shoot down?
-
I think they stopped issuing them around ~2008, though I could be wrong. I've got one on my watch that I don't even remember how to use. The "fuel burn" example used above is simple math anyone should be able to do either in their head or on a piece of scrap paper. Lessee...... I'm burning 12k/hour, that's 200lb/min. I've got to go another 690 miles, and I'm flying 5 miles per minute. That means that it will take me 138 minutes to get there, therefore I need a bit under 28K. Not difficult.

So how much longer until this thread needs to be merged into the WTF thread?

Cliffs: Elderly man chases off would-be robbers out of an internet cafe. Only downside is he didn't kill them. No mention if he is a vet or not, but it doesn't really matter. This dude earns BAOTW for sure.

Shutuuuuuuuup..... you dont know who's looking for the next "good" idea! Seriously though, what happened to "don't be an asshole" and its companion rule "don't let your buddy be an asshole"? Believe it or not it is entirely possible to go out, get drunk, have a great time and NOT cause an international incident.

Probably wasn't presented in a 69 slide brief and/or hasn't been reported in commercial news, so they're not sure about its classification.

Fucking THIS, but unfortunately in today's black and white AF, there is no such thing as a "time and place" for something. If there is EVER a time and place something is inappropriate, it seems to be inappropriate ALL THE TIME. I'm surprised they haven't started downloading CVR tapes from every sortie to see if I said any naughty words during the flight. This is the same kind of mentality as the jackass idiot who builds a house next to an airport or racetrack and then bitches about the noise. You can't pretend for a second you didn't expect what you got, at least not to some degree. What happened to being expected to conform to the society that YOU VOLUNTARILY CHOSE TO JOIN, instead of that society being expected to adapt to the lowest common denominator. I'm 100% with you that crimes are crimes and will not be tolerated, but shenanigans are a completely different thing, and serve a very important purpose for morale and tradition.

Not the link I thought I was going to see. I ran across an article a few weeks ago about a guy who hikes around Asia, in particular the Himalayas finding previously lost crash sites. If he finds remains he contacts JPRC. Always good to hear of a fellow aviator getting to come home, even if it is a bit late. Sounds like you're going easy on them. If you're going to assess fines for links to news articles, perhaps a tally of total uses in that article would be in order.... and double it if pictures are included. Nobody deserves that -
Generals perks exposed... Good read... Thought?

Might be because of privatization. I was at Laughlin when the base housing got privatized. Went from having to do your own lawn to only having to do anything that was inside a fence. Cutting grass, trimming trees/bushes, raking leaves was all done by a grounds team hired by the housing company. -

WTF is it with people over the past few years not being content with what they have, and being content with what others have, no matter what someone else might have? This whole "I'm doing poorly because you're doing well" and "you don't deserve that" mentality I find to be particularly toxic. If you want something, go out and WORK to earn it, don't get your undergarments constricted over what you feel you're entitled to, or your opinions of the possessions of others. -
I want to know what sane person loops that shit for 5 hours?

This complaint also highlights just how broken our EPR system is. I don't know her, she may have been a good troop (this passive aggressive grudge holding non-withstanding) but all the reports (and the official complaint) make her sound like some sort of super star based on her EPRs. If she was truly a shining star she would be at least a MSgt, if not a SMSgt by 17 years. But now the Air Force (particularly males in flying squadrons) look even worse for picking on such a spectacular troop.

I bought a Pop's jacket too, and caught a lot of shit from people for "buying something I get for free" until they see the jacket. A jacket from Pop's is worth every single penny. I've compared it to both old and new issued jackets and it puts them to shame.

Wow, that was fast! Oxygen system ruled out Sounds like it's still a sensitive subject

Too bad the manufacturer seems to have worked out a "in soviet russia" type warranty-- build a flawed O2 system, get cut an additional multi-billion dollar contract to fix your own design flaw. Kind of like Northrop-Grumman being able to tell the AF to pound sand when their depot workers blew up a perfectly good E-8.

Off the top of my head there have been production F-22 crashes at Nellis, Edwards, Alaska, and now Tyndall. That's four, unless I missed any.
