  1. If that was anyone other than Don Draper, that would be so incredibly gay. Instead, it borders on epic.
  2. How useful is it without a data connection (in flight I mean)? How much space does it take up on the device?
  3. Has anyone tried this? Looks to be an Android equivalent of Foreflight. Is it worth a download?
  4. The sad thing is this is the first hack job I have ever seen where the victim was truly a good man. I had hopes he would make a run for president in 2016. I think this story will develop further before it is over, but I hope Gen Petraeus comes out ahead. It figures that one of the best leaders of our generation (regardless of your stand on the war) would fall victim to something like this, while scum sucking shit bags continue to endure at all levels.
  5. Shenanigans. While it is 100% believable that Petraeus would have the character to step down for something he felt harmed his credibility and the credibility of the organization he led; I also believe he has the character to not engage in something like this in the first place. Either the man has been running a decade long snow job, or someone showed him the door.
  6. We should definitely borrow a few trillion more from them, that'll slow em down!
  7. Count me as another vote for getting it done on paper, and not necessarily coincident with a full on "wedding". It is impossible to account for your time post-UPT. Even IF you're able to get something seemingly nailed down prior to graduation (i.e. have a class date for SERE/school) that is always subject to change with little to no notice. Your gaining SQ/CC will have a LOT more flexibility to grant you time off. I presume the desire to get the wedding done shortly after UPT is to have the AF pay to move your new spouse in the upcoming post-UPT PCS? If so, all you need is the legal documentation and to be married "on paper".
  8. https://mashable.com/2012/10/30/sandy-space-shuttle-enterprise/ Of all the places we could have put a shuttle (Houston, anyone?) they leave Enterprise outside to ROT on the deck of the Intrepid. Less than six months later it is damaged by severe weather. Disgusting. Enterprise should be re-located indoors immediately.
  9. You DO know there are such things as airplanes capable of operating in conditions other than day VMC without declaring an emergency, right?
  10. Don't think of this as a pushover or a pull, I really wish I could see the ADI tapes from this, but I bet you could achieve such a VVI change at a relatively low perceived G loading. Ten seconds is a LONG time when it comes to something like this.
  11. Just a guess, but going from a shallow turn to inverted with a steep downward vector can be accomplished in less than 10 seconds. I haven't seen the SIB/AIB, so I'm not sure about aircraft attitude during the mishap, but going from ~3000 FPS to ~11000 FPS is certainly feasible if you've lost aircraft control. I used this mishap a few months ago to argue against taking away more flying hours in exchange for increased sim hours. You can't sim fatigue and spatial D, no matter how fancy the sim is.
  12. Very doubtful. Every career field is supposed to have at least some representation on the board proportionate to the percentage that career field makes of the records to be evaluated; however, that does not guarantee that someone with your background will be the person to score your record. Unless you're just trolling, in which case carry on.
  13. I disagree with that advice. Again, you will have plenty of time to learn while you're there. Unless you can get your hand on the CURRENT checklist (unlikely, controlled document) you are taking your chances with gouge. Seriously, don't sweat trying to learn stuff early.
  14. I asked this question at SOS when we were doing one of the few valuable classes there-- the promotion board exercise. I noticed on one of the records that the person in question had started but not completed UPT, and became a nav instead. This is clearly visible to the board on your SURF (or whatever the "proper" term is). It will probably cause increased scrutiny on that 475. If the 475 tells the board that you are a turd and were washed out for being a turd, it will hurt you; however, it is understood that pilot training (or any other training for that matter) isn't for everyone, so even an SIE isn't automatically a deal breaker, so long as you do well where you end up.
  15. I wouldn't bother with anything before I showed up if I were you, ESPECIALLY T-6 specific stuff. You will not be expected to know anything when you start UPT, and everything you need to know will be provided to you. The other thing to consider is that there is a LOT of bad gouge out there. Pubs change ALL THE TIME, and most third party gouge does not keep up, nor does it usually reflect a "current as of" date. Enjoy your free time while it lasts. UPT is a 52 week kick in the junk. You will have plenty of time to study and learn at UPT, but it is substantially harder to un-learn bad info than it is to initially learn something.
  16. Fair enough (though sad these days). I guess what I meant to say was he shouldn't expect to be actively fighting for his life like someone who actually flunks out of UPT.
  17. Unless your medical problems were self induced, your process will be far different than someone being eliminated "for cause". You're not being flunked out of pilot training. Your situation sounds unfortunate, but I expect your leadership will take care of you to the max extent possible.
  18. The problem with "typical" leadership is two fold. First is the aforementioned aversion to giving criticism when its due, but the other part is FAR more dangerous. A truly bad leader (and I've seen more of these than any other kind) creates an environment where people are fearful of admitting mistakes because they know that "leader" will not have their back, and will actively pursue punishment against the individual. I'm not saying that people who commit crimes (I'm talking true criminal acts here) shouldn't be dealt with properly, but when you are scared to tell the boss you screwed up in the jet because you know he'll insta-Q3 you and probably cut you an LOR it creates a strong motivation to keep things quiet. Best case scenario is it prevents others from learning from your mistakes, and worst case it can lead to a mishap.
  19. Well, aside from being the cover sheet of the right side of your official record that meets a board, but... you know... nothing too official
  20. I think he was playing a role there. We are getting all wound up about stuff that a lot of us take for granted. See my drown out post from page 7
  21. I heard that you need to have a doctorate to be competitive for O-3 these days
  22. Your SURF still reflects Non-Res or Res, but you are right there is no identification as to which version of Non-Res you do. In theory it shouldn't matter Non-Res vs Res, but unfortunately it does.
  23. Wow. You clearly are not in the flying world, nor know anything about it. If you want to know anything about ANY weapon system in the Air Force, you go to the squadron and find the crustiest gray beard O-5 in the building. This person will almost always NOT be the SQ/CC or DO. It will be the crusty passed over O-5 who has no prospect of promotion. Usually this person will hold no "real" job in the unit, but will be the person that every CP, AC, and even IPs come to for answers. They have more time in the jet than most guys have on active duty. They have every applicable TO and AFI memorized, not through study but through experience. These are the guys I seek out when I need answers to life's questions. By you disregarding and seeking to discredit one of these individuals it speaks volumes about both your character and your experience.
