AWACS Flight Deck Modernization
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to tkc10chief's topic in General Discussion
They were going to do this back around 2002 or so, but that got turned off because of funding. I saw a few pictures of the proposal, and it looked promising. Looked similar to the E-6B setup. The engineer's panel was going to remain more or less unchanged, but he was going to get a monitor on an arm (kind of like the FBCB2 displays in back) that he could access more parameters that aren't necessarily displayed on the flight deck normally. The WX radar we have right now was supposed to be the first step to it, and if you look in the -1 there is (or maybe WAS) verbiage about how "it provides building blocks for future expansion" or some shit. Notice how 69% of the buttons and knobs on the WX radar panel are non-functional. When I first got here we didn't even have TCAS, and the arc mode page didn't exist. The TA/VSI we have right now was an off-the-shelf solution when the glass upgrade got turned off. Europe was ready to BAN us until we got TCAS! -

Pentagon Ends Air Force Global Hawk

Lots of money spent on GARBAGE systems, but not a dime toward things like JSTARS engines-- a proven platform with paid-for results. Noted. Pork > capability. -
I think they TOTALLY get it (Suicides)
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to Napoleon_Tanerite's topic in General Discussion
Wow. I'm glad I'm not where you are. Morale certainly does matter. If morale wasn't in the shitter then all this resiliency BS wouldn't be necessary. High morale and suicide rates are inversely proportional. The happier someone is to come to work every day and do their job, the less likely they are to kill themselves, and it doesn't have anything to do with how many demands are being placed on them. The most satisfied I ever have been in my job is a period when I was flying 18 hour sorties with 24 hours between them. It was a kick in the face, but I couldn't wait to get up and do it again because I was enjoying what I was doing and felt that it was very rewarding and worthwhile. Leadership was singularly focused on getting the Job done (not "the mission" which has become a trophy word to hand out to EVERYONE). Queep was non existent because it didn't matter, and we were loving life. That's the kind of Air Force we should be fostering. A commander should never have to tell their troops to "suck it up." Continually putting troops in a situation where they must "suck it up" against their will is a sign of very poor leadership. We are often asked to do some very stressful, demanding and often dangerous things. When they are meaningful I can't think of a person alive who wouldn't gladly "suck it up" without ever having to be told to do so. It's when tasks become menial, degrading, or worthless while still being stressful, demanding and dangerous is when you run into a situation where people must be told to "suck it up" because leadership has failed to prioritize tasks and manage the important vs unimportant things, and the people suffer as a result. -

Still going strong. I think the most telling thing I've seen in my time at Shoe Flag has been just how much leadership doesn't get how broken the force is. To a person there has been a general impression that "nothing to see here, move along" when questioned about the real problems in the Air Force. -
Not Aviation related...but still epic story.

I love how the police say they will patrol the neighborhood--- it seems that the glitch has already been fixed, the right way. -
Bye bye demo teams (A-10, F-15E, F-16)
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to BattleRattle's topic in General Discussion
Disappointing. One air show demo does more than what a thousand cheezy sci-fi TV commercials can do in terms of getting people to notice the Air Force. -
Space & Missiles Flight Suits (GONE!)
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to letsgofast's topic in General Discussion
The comment was well intentioned, but poorly delivered. The truth is there is no "useless" job left in the Air force (though a substantial number of useless PEOPLE remain). Every useless position (and tons of useful ones) have been eliminated. I value my enlisted aircrew, as our mission would be impossible without them, and I have had an FE keep me out of a bad situation on more than one occasion, but I wouldn't go so far to say that I value them more than a career field that I admittedly know little to nothing about. -
Why didn't I think of that? That's brilliant!

Secret Service prostitution bust spreads to military
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to czecksikhs's topic in Squadron Bar
Expect a re-vamped "Trafficking in persons" CBT and a few strongly worded emails. That should fix the problem. -
Nice vid. Few things say "you're having a bad day" than a B-52 overhead.

Yes, Dan Clark was here last Fri.

Not sure I got my head wrapped completely around it, but it sounded like ITDYs were going to become more like a regular duty type thing, and once tasked you automatically incur the commitment. She said she goes through as many as 100 people to fill an ITDY sometimes due to people running for the hills.
-
No link, this was from a mass briefing at SOS by the Assignments O-6 from AFPC yesterday. Other gems: 1. Intel dude asked what was going to happen when the economy improved and retention dropped, thus causing an even larger exodus from intel. The answer was basically to rob peter to pay paul-- force crossflow people from other AFSCs to fill intel. 2. Coming soon: no more 3 day opt on ITDYs. You will go, and you will not have a say in the matter. Overall it was a good brief, but it's shocking with what is going on with some of the personnel stuff.
-
She still didn't even answer my question though-- is the Air Force doing ANYTHING to prevent it from happening again? It sounded like AFPC was shocked that so many people wanted to get out from under a crushing ADSC. The reason that retention is high among junior pilots is because we have no choice! When shown the door it should be no surprise how many people ran for it. I'm not saying I'm trying to get out, but I saw a LOT of dudes ride that roller coaster.

The verbiage in the TO? Or are you hoping it was written somewhere else as well?
-
I've seen people expected to return home on weekends to do work (3 hour drive one way). IMO that should be an IG issue
-
He seemed aware of that concern and said something like that wouldn't go live without some "Thou shalt not" type language from HQAF leadership, but even with that I'm not optimistic. I'm pretty sure there will always be pressure from home station leadership for guys to "voluntarily" do home station work. One good thing is you might be able to avoid going non-current while doing PME.
-
"In place" TDYs from home station (implying you wouldn't be tasked with anything else while home) as well as "one week per year" PME. Both ideas got a lot of murmurs in the crowd.

I'm at shoe flag right now, and it was mentioned by the General on Friday (with the beta group in the crowd). According to him it's still in the test phases, but he would like to see it rolled out wide spread soon. Had a few other "great" ideas, and I'm surprised the briefing didn't end with a rain of tomatoes flying toward the stage.

They actually opened the first briefing at shoe flag on friday with a tribute to piston. Simple but effective.
