Mass Casualty Situation at Reno Air Races
Napoleon_Tanerite replied to LockheedFix's topic in General Discussion
According to the story I read it was Jimmy Leeward of Ocala FL flying the P-51 "Galloping Ghost" him -
If you're not ready for a checkride EVERY time you step, you probably shouldn't step in the first place. I don't get these guys who have to feverishly prepare for a checkride... isn't it your JOB to be as goos as you can be at all times?

BX renovations.....a waste or worth it

My point is if you CHOOSE to have kids, don't expect me (or anyone else) to subsidize your financial choice. That's like saying we should add a basic allowance for a new car to the paycheck. The return on investment may be different, but having a kid is no less of a financial choice than buying a car, and the same considerations should apply, chief among them being "CAN I AFFORD TO MAKE THIS CHOICE?" Unfortunately people have this blinding desire to have a few kids, and then walk around hat in hand expecting everyone else to cover them. -

Same kind of hostility as when the slug in front of you at walmart buys a bunch of groceries with a food stamp card, and once that transaction is complete loads up the checkout belt with xbox games, beer, and various other stuff that should be a VERY low priority when you're on food stamps. Do I equate junior Es with welfare leeches? Of course not, they actually work (damn hard most of the time) for the peanuts they earn; however, if they're going to cry poor and expect me (and other Os and senior Es) to subsidize them, they most likely shouldn't be driving their brand new car with custom wheels and $5000 stereo to work. -

That's fine, and I am not an idiot-- I know that a guy is going to be NMC if he's worried about his kids; however, I think the daycare should be self sufficient. One person's financial choice (and anyone who doesn't think having kids is a financial choice probably should not be reproducing in the first place) is not my financial burden. If they're going to blow smoke in our direction with regard to where the profits from the BX go to, they should at least make it fair. I understand that only a small percentage of base residents use the hunting area, probably a smaller percentage that who use the daycare, but I know a LOT more people use other outdoor rec services, and would probably appreciate some better equipment from time to time if the funding were ever there. A 99%/1% disbursement plan where the daycare gets almost every penny of available funds isn't right either. -
THERE'S the perfect response. If he decides he wants to stand you up and quiz you on that shit, step 1 is actually recite the creed (beat him at his own game) and then waste 20 minutes of his time quizzing him on EVERY airplane on the ramp, its mission, its history, its crew composition and its use as a weapon.

I couldn't agree more. I hate when people try to use kids as leverage to try to pry money out of my wallet either directly or indirectly. If I liked kids, I would have some. Unfortunately, the only thing I like less than the prospect of my own kids is YOUR kids. How's about instead of pumping more money into the daycare, they roll up a few pennies and fix the bridge to the hunting area on base that has been washed out for several years, with no funds to fix it? -
Masters is the new bachelors... you need a doctorate to really be competitive for major these days.

My understanding is that RECEIVERS are permitted; however, anything that re-transmits a signal is not. As far as what works best, most boosters are specifically made for windows anyway, so pick whatever you want it seems.

The BX and commissary are the epitome of DOD mismanagement of a potential revenue source. The fact that there are two separate structures for the BX/commissary is absolutely LAUGHABLE (yes, i realize that the commissary is DECA and the BX is AAFES). If they were smart they would employ the walmart model. Consolidate everything into one structure. If DECA absolutely insists on having their own separate world, make a closeable gate to their part of the building so when they are closed on Mondays for no explanable reason, then close the gate. Same goes for the class 6, Burger King, and any other retail outlet on the base.... one building, one (massive) parking lot, one checkout (don't tell me computers can't keep sales records separate at the register). The reason I don't shop at the BX and commissary isn't so much that it's not a bargain, it's that it is an epic pain in the ass. -
You really, REALLY should consider checking yourself. You may not realize how many people know people who know people who post on this site. Off the top of my head I can name half a dozen guys from work who PID'd me here, and I have done the same to them without too much effort. You REALLY don't want to create some sort of internet persona that you are not comfortable with ALL your coworkers (and presumably your boss) knowing about. Your assertion that "You have no clue as to how I conduct myself and are not in a position to assume such." may be applicable now, but I guarantee that if you stick around here or the Air Force long that will not last, especially in the pilot world. Everyone knows everyone else, and your reputation can precede you more than you may ever imagine, for good or for bad. Getting a bad reputation is kind of like eating tuna in the flight room-- it's a stink that doesn't go away quickly, and you're going to spend a LOT of time and effort trying to live it down.

Watch the video. You can see them moving in a way that corresponds with the direction the nose moves. I'd venture to say they function more like canards than anything else. I know they're all the rage on a lot of new-fangled fighters (Rafale, Eurofighter, JAS-39). To me this looks a LOT like an Su-37 and a YF-23 had an abomination of a child.

I love it when a thread goes in an unintended direction

If you're getting butthurt about getting made fun of for tuna jokes, you have a long and painful career ahead of you. I strongly suggest you grow a thicker skin. Also the fact that you allegedly "rocked" your solo doesn't count for shit. Not in UPT, not ever. You are EXPECTED to be a good pilot, I don't care if you're a UPT stud or a gray beard IP. If you fall short of the excellence that is expected of you that's a whole different matter, but "rocking" a flight is never a good defense against buffoonery and clownism. Carry your tool with pride. Display it when it is appropriate, conceal it when necessary. Don't assume everyone wants to see it, but don't be shy to wave it around either. Wait.... wat?

I would agree, too bad it costs $rape.

Got this one at Academy a few months ago. They had one with a few dents on it from shipping and I got it for $150 out the door. Very happy with it. It's nice to have the gas side for when I want to cook up something quick like a steak for breakfast, and still have the charcoal side for when it's time to take pride in a meal.

Seriously... these non-news stories really need to go.

I know it's been a while. Anthony was a friend of a friend, and that friend knows I keep current on this site and asked me if I had any new words on this mishap. I didn't, but I figured I'd ask you guys if there was ever a causal determination for this?

I almost got deported/black listed for something that was 100% not my fault. Was ALMOST the best day of my life. "You mean I can't come back? Ever?"

Completely, 100%, unsubstantiated rumor

That doesn't pass a reality check for a couple reasons. 1. You can't just "transfer" iron out of the guard to active duty. It's a bit of a one way street there. Those airplanes were released by the federal government and are off their books. They are officially property of their respective states. They can be federalized during a mobilization, and fall under federal CONTROL; however, the iron remains property of the state. Are there ways around it? Sure, but see point 2. 2. In many/most cases the active force doesn't WANT that iron back. A big reason that the guard has a mission in the first place is money. Since the assets are guard, the state foots the bill for upkeep and non-federalized operation. I seriously doubt that there's room in the DoD budget to absorb even a PORTION of the cost that the Guard pays for with regard to upkeep and maintaining their assets. 3. The guard is one big jobs program. Elected reps tend to be VERY protective of their guard jobs in their states too. If you delete a guard unit, you have just deleted hundreds, if not thousands of jobs in that state. That tends to make elected reps uneasy, and is something they will fight on capitol hill. It's not something the SECDEF or even POTUS can simply mandate. I think you titled the thread properly. The sky isn't falling here. If anything I wouldn't be surprised to see a bigger push to move assets to the guard to get them off the DoD's books, but the states might not want them on the basis that they can't afford them either. Who knows, but rest assured the Guard isn't going anywhere.... at least I don't think so. -
no way that's for realz.

Did anyone else catch the price tag she quoted? $100m seems a bit low for a decked out brand new 757, but then again I haven't been plane shopping lately. If asked to guess what that airplane cost as shown I would guess more in the $300m range, but again, my experience is limited.

Anyone looked at the Boneyard on Google Maps lately?
