Don't forget to add 16% 401k company contributions from your base pay for PAX carriers. That's an extra $23k on top of the number you provided. These numbers are all minimums. Additionally, you have to approach the income situation holistically. How much money are you making with the AF per hour if you're working at least 40-60 hours per week? At the airlines you might be gone 10-14 days per month, but actual time working (excluding if you're on reserve), is going to be around that 75 hour number you quoted. That's 75 hours of labor for the entire month or an average of 18.75 hours per week based on a 4 week month. You also need to assess career earnings. Yes, maybe at the beginning of your airline career you would have been making more on AD, but once you're a senior FO or junior captain, your income will drastically eclipse AD pay. Particularly if you do an apples to apples comparison on hourly rate.

Conspiracy by Ryan Holiday is a great book that explores this topic. The MSM is a dying hag grasping at relevance. I think there's going to be a day we look back at it collectively as a less credible version of the National Enquirer.

That's a severe problem; particularly for California. That old adage about 10% of the people pay 90% of the taxes (or whatever the exact figures are, it varies by state) is going to come to a head. It's conceivable that one day the last guy/gal that was helping generate solvency for the state eventually leaves...Then they raise taxes to compensate for the loss...Then more people leave...Then...Profit?

This raises a few questions that I don't know the answer to: What percentage of boomers' 401k's tied up in equities? The common school of thought is that as you get nearer retirement age, you blend in "safer" investments, typically in the form of bonds. Next, what percentage of boomers are passing away with a substantial sum still in their retirement accounts? If it's high, what are their kids doing with it? Next, what percentage of 401k's have bonds in them and how much? Another theory getting floated is that equities are being driven up because there's nowhere else great to park your liquidity. Interest rates have been so low for so long that the bond market makes hardly any sense to the average investor. If memory serves, even bond funds weren't great during March 2020. There was a big sell off and if you needed the cash in that time frame, you would've taken a haircut (though not as bad as the S&P). Where's @MilitaryToFinance? He's probably got some insight into all this.

Clark, with the yields so low, the formula for inflation outmoded (in my opinion), and the fact that you owe taxes on the return, I'm not sure how useful TIPS are. There's a school of thought that Market and real estate are the best inflationary hedge...Time will tell; let us know what you decide to do.

Anyone have intel on the latest contract proposals from the Big 3?

Pretty hilarious that Delta Airlines took such a hardline stance on it. Especially considering you've got to have an ID to get through security to get on one of their planes; you also have to have a ticket and an ID (in the form of a credit card) to get into their lounges. That's racist.

Anyone have recommendations for books about the history of Ukrainian/Russian relations and/or the Balkans? I'm ignorant on the topic.

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up elsewhere, or maybe I just missed it...Seems incongruent coming from the guy that is preaching "agility." There's nothing agile about the acquisition process; what are the odds we even see a basic design of said aircraft before his tenure ends? I want to give Brown the benefit of the doubt; I really do. Just like I wanted to for Goldfein...and Welsh...

Not sure; might be that even prisoners, illegal immigrants, and homeless people don't trust the government/pharma.

California has 3 million doses sitting on the shelf doing nothing. Vaccinate people that want it; the end.

The math checks. This should be a reminder to everyone: Have your financial house in order in perpetuity. The people that will come out ahead will be the ones that can take risks and absorb several months without steady income. Delta is set to ramp up operations and have been rumored to be placing deposit on simulator slots across the country and possibly the globe...Vote with your feet if you want to send a strong message.

This would've been the perfect opportunity for the AF to prove that people are its most valuable asset. Not only that, they could have doubled down and bridged the gap on retention until UPT output gets fixed by bumping the bonus. What's everyone's guess on how much higher the take rate would've been if they offered $50k/yr? A number which is actually cheap when compared to the cost of training another pilot; not to mention the most important aspect: A dude that has 8-12 years' worth of experience is literally irreplaceable for 8-12 years and has a non-linear impact because that person can train/mentor dozens of fellow squad members.

Can't; they're already collecting $10k/mo in retirement pay while sitting on the boards of Raytheon/Boeing/Lockheed for $1 million per year. You know, when they're not on the lecture circuit making $100,000 for talking to organizations about "leadership" and "efficiency." -
Appreciate the insight, dude; the Decathlon would probably be a good choice...I've had my eye on RV-8s too.

Meant to address that: Almost exclusively VFR fun flying with occasionally a passenger. Hauling very little weight, but might want the option to take some camping gear if I get into the back country thing. I've seen some excellent -180s for sale, but the S21 looks hard to beat.

Regardless of whether or not it will happen, there should be a mechanism to reduce the likelihood of false accusations. -
Boys, I'm looking to get into GA sometime in the future. I've had my eye on high wing tail wheels. An S-21 would be awesome, but they seem to be rare on the used market. Any pitfalls or things you wish you would've known before getting into something like a 180, Cub, or Maule?

I'm baffled that there's virtually no cost to filing a false report. If during the course of the investigation there's incontrovertible evidence the accusation was contrived, the legal consequences of the original accusation should be transferred to the person who falsely brought up the claim. -
Bode, Sorry if you answered this already, but what are the potential options if you just turn down IDE? Can you go hang out at a SQ for a year or two? Do you need to get formally requal'd in a jet or just an in-house?

It's certainly a complicated issue, Clark. The only definitive conclusion I've been able to come up with is that every single congressman and senator that votes for war, war spending, or any form of military intervention should be obligated to send one of their family members into the fray. It's easy to ship someone else's kid to the front line when yours is doing coke at a frat house at an Ivy League school; a little skin in the game would go a long way.

A couple good articles by a disproportionately smart guy that's in the sector: https://davidsacks.medium.com/the-speech-cartel-b3f5555f7787 https://medium.com/craft-ventures/section-230-mend-it-dont-end-it-e33799a43a5f Sacks argues that speech, particularly at scale, has been almost completely digitized. Thus, the first amendment takes precedence over all else. Social media is effectively a utility at this point; imagine not being able to get power or water turned on at your house due to the way you voted. Running a business without social media is impossible in the year 2021. Additionally, as CH pointed out, this cartel can't have their cake and eat it too with regard to 230. This very well could be the most important legal and Constitutional discussion of the 21st century.
