C-130 AMP (Avionics Modernization Program)

Dusting off an old threat to highlight some journalism excellence.

My favorite:

Quote

As a propeller-driven aircraft, the C-130s are able to fly at low altitudes, land in more rugged conditions and withstand harsh weather such as obscurants. The propellers make the aircraft’s engines less susceptible to debris flying in and causing operational problems for the engines.

An Air Force C-17, by contrast, needs to operate in more defined conditions, such as areas with longer, separated or unobstructed runways. Flying debris or uneven terrain could of course present complications for C-17 engines, whereas the C-130 is specifically designed for low-altitude, high risk combat zones with uneven terrain – scenarios requiring both durability and maneuverability. In fact, in so-called “hot” or active combat zones, C-130s often airdrop weapons, supplies and even troops when called upon by Commanders.

Apparently C-17 engines are vulnerable to flying debris and uneven terrain, which highlights why C-130's are good at low level and propellers are somehow good at FOD reduction.

Someone get that guy a Pulitzer.

Outstanding journalism aside.  It's good to see the H's get a solid upgrade.

Well, it IS a herk, although the norm is one shutdown. But two is something. The AMP birds didn't fly for quite some time at LRF.

They'll never make the NexGen deadline.  Gonna be an interesting standoff considering "no waivers" is the phrase of choice.

#4 fire, #2 throttle stuck at 12k in/lbs.

Damn! Was is a binding of the #2 throttle, i.e. jammed or unresponsive engine?

Maybe?

https://docs.house.gov/meetings/AS/AS28/20180928/108703/HHRG-115-AS28-Wstate-HarrisJ-20180928.pdf

The FAA’s deadline for compliance is January 1, 2020; the C-130H fleet will meet the deadline via the C-130H Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) Increment 1, and the C-130J will be compliant via the 4 accelerated Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) out program.  Third, both the legacy C-130H and the C-130J fleets require avionics, communications and electrical upgrades to maintain their warfighting capability and improve maintainability and reliability ;these upgrades are in addition to the aforementioned compliance driven upgrades.

Why don’t units just buy the J? Eventually Lockheed is going to refuse to support MX for the H.

We don't have enough in squadron funds here in the Texas ANG to buy new J's.  We are trying to sell some heritage patches to make up the difference but that is taking longer than we expected.

You need to sell incentive rides to aviation enthusiasts and to lonely old women.

Because all the 12Ms won't have jobs anymore. There's a lot of legacy herk navs in pilot training due to their units transitioning to something that doesn't need a nav.

We're keeping legacies around so navs can keep a job?  What will State Farm do without their steady flow of new salesmen?

The military is the biggest jobs program we've got!

I don't think AMC realizes that getting rid of 12Ms will eventually result in a massive shortage of rated dudes on staff. There are a lot of 12Ms working staff, AMLO, CRG, etc right now. But they can't stay in those jobs forever.

Good thing we have plenty of MAF pilots to flow into staff billets.

What percentage of nav’s took the bonus? Oh yeah....

Maybe not FOREVER but have fun sitting sideways pushing paper to 22 YOS.

Are the Hs only in the Guard and Reserve or are there active units with them?

If they’re sold online and you have a link share it and I’ll buy a few as I’m a collector.

They can always just make another career field "rated" like they did with ABMs.
