Agreed on harbor freight. Their tools aren’t “the best of the best by the men’s room” for professionals that use them daily, but for that tool you need every now and then they have great products.

Ill say the same for PSA. They have good stuff for range fun at a decent price but I’ve had some minor  issues with their stuff, as well as several close friends. I wouldn’t bet my life on a harbor freight tool or a PSA gun/part, but they have good deals for “weekend warriors”.

Maybe we need a "tool talk" thread too.  Funny you say that about Harbor Freight, because a very good friend and his dad own a fairly decent sized mechanics shop and they have a decent number of HF tools.  The dad's advice: anything heavy with metal - shop crane, jack stands, etc  - or tools not used every day like impact sockets and special crows feet wrenches, they will buy HF tools.  He was actually ripping apart a customers engine with that new $99 12V Earthquake ratchet from HF.  The lifetime warranty on things like wrenches and sockets make it a no-brainer, even for two pros like them, as long as you are not exchanging stuff every week because it breaks.

I have a PSA 20" A2 clone that I built and couldn't be happier with it. The only malfunctions that I have had have been self-induced when learning to reload. It's currently shooting at 2-3 MOA and I can reliably hit steel out to 600m.

Not sure if it has been posted already, but I highly suggest everyone check out https://www.reddit.com/r/gundeals/new/

Basically, everyone posts the different gun related deals they find online. It's potentially terrible for your wallet, but I did find 10 PMAGs for less than 8 bucks with free shipping. Not bad!

Another great site for deals is this:  https://gun.deals

That's the old Slick Guns website.  Download their app and get online prices for firearms by scanning the UPC bar code.  The Exchange has a price match guarantee, so they have to match Bud's, Academy, etc.

Way to go, Ohio!  So happy you stuck it to this RINO!

https://www.mrpolitic.com/2018/12/27/ohio-legislature-defeats-kasichs-veto-on-gun-owner-rights-bill/

Essentially, the now approved bill makes it the State's burden to prove a self-defense shooting wasn't just that.  Previous law, and Kasich's preferred method, is that the individual had to prove innocence.

Fcuk him and his horse.

Just picked up a Sig P365. Looking for holster recommendations! I have a glock 19 with a crossbreed holster but I never really carry it because it’s bulky and hard to conceal.

Looking at the Stealthgear Mini Ventcore And also the Aliengear Shapeshifter kit. I’ve heard stealthgear is higher quality but I like the idea of 4 holsters for $100 with Aliengear, that way I can try out different things to figure out what works.

Also interested in appendix carry. Any recommendations or resources re: holsters or just carrying in general would be much appreciated! I’m trying to avoid spending hundreds of dollars to find something that works.

cheers!

I don't have any experience with Stealthgear/Aliengear, but look at a Vedder LightTuck, I really like mine (have multiple) and everyone else seems to only have great things to say about them.

Need some help here on legalities.  I’m inheriting a WW II era Japanese Type 99 rifle from my grandfather. He bought it in Japan while he was in the Navy (~1946).  It also has a bayonet attached.  He had a document at one time saying it was legal for him to own but that’s long gone.  I’ve never owned a gun before and I was hoping to just keep it on the wall for display (as he did with it for >60 years).  What kind of documents or safety devices do I need to make it legal?

My home of record is Illinois so I got an IL Firearm Owner ID.  Is there anything else?  Is it exempt from typical rules because of its age (it’s never been modified from its functioning state)?  Do I need to comply with local state rules as I PCS around as well?  Any extra gotchas for movers to be willing to move it?

Appreciate the help!

Home of record doesn't matter.  Where you have it does.  What state do you plan to store it in?

First off, that is a very cool piece of history to inherit!

You are over thinking this whole process of firearm ownership. With a few exceptions, like NYC and maybe DC, there aren’t really any restrictions on possessing a standard bolt action, centerfire rifle. Like nunya posted above, home of record means little to you right now, unless you’re storing or transporting it back to IL. According to Federal law for purpose of firearms, you are considered a resident of your PCS duty location. You didn’t say your current state, so hard to give correct info. That is where you’ll find any restrictions on storage requirements.

Generally, I’d say displaying it as a wall hangar should be fine. Just some common sense with not having ammo nearby if you have kids, etc. Also, be wary of strangers, such as repair or service workers, that have access to your house and can see it. Could potentionally lead to theft. Definitely don’t let any movers take the rifle, move it yourself. A $25 rifle case from Walmart wild work well, just get one long enough. Add a couple pad locks if that makes you feel better.

I am not sure of your exposure to guns in .mil, but remember it’s just a tool and mechanical device. People with limited exposure to guns often tend to assign more powers to them than those of us who use them all the time. Look up the rules of gun safety and stick to them. After all, it’s just some metal, wood, and maybe plastic designed to complete a task. I’d recommend buying yourself a decent .22 rifle like a Ruger 10/22. Learn to shoot it and have some fun!

Nice Arisaka Type 99!  They are not overly uncommon or expensive (you can pick them up for between $300-500 depending on condition.  Yours is probably in the $450-500 range), but given the history with your grandfather it's definitely something you want to cherish and pass on to your kids!

As nunya said, where you're from doesn't matter as much as where you are.   Your IP address shows you in Lexington, Kentucky which, if that is the case, you are golden as that state doesn't have any restrictive laws to owning that rifle.  There is no registration or any other kind of nonsense to deal with.  As such, display it and don't worry about it.

But if by chance you do go back to Illinois or anywhere else, be sure to research the  gun laws there.  Wikipedia has a decent overview for each state, and links for more info.  Try to stay in a free state if you can, while your military status may allow you to possess firearms in some of the more socialist states it will still be a giant pain in the ass (no STS, they will literally breechload you!).

By the way, that rifle is considered a Curio or Relic (C&R), i.e.  firearms classified by the ATF under 27 CFR §478.11 as special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons; but that deals more with the ability to purchase, own and transfer them under a special license (known as an 03 FFL).  Possession doesn't require an 03 FFL.   To be exempt from being considered a firearm, it would have to have been produced in or before 1898 (or a replica of such firearms) which then makes it a technically an "antique."

If you plan to shoot it (and you should!), and you don't know the last time it has been fired, it would be a good idea to get a gunsmith to check it over before doing so.  It is probably safe, but it's always better to be sure.  I've taken old Russian Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifles out and placed sandbags over them the first time I fired them, but I wouldn't recommend doing that!

Cheers!  M2

Thanks for the pointers.  Nebraska and North Dakota are where I’m concerned with.  So far, it looks like neither requires any FOID or permit since it’s a long gun.  Surprising to me, but I guess that’s because I grew up in Illinois.  After more research on the serial number, it’s a Type I (not 99).  Made in Italy after China stopped being a weapon source option for Japan.  Definitely more sentimental value than dollar value.  Thanks again.

Other than IL or some of the liberal coastal states, most don't have any kind of ownership permit or registration process.

Please don't think of IL gun laws as "normal," sensible, or effective.  They are none of the above.

I’ll share my new gun since M2 posted the you’ll shoot your eye kid. Picked up an M&P 15/22 at the end of Feb From PSA for a good deal.  Not as good as they where running over black fri with red dot and carrying case but still. Plus S&W is runnning. a $50 rebate on rifles fir mil folks. Always wanted a dedicated AR in 22 anyway. Plus the kids can step up to this one next.

Edit I’ll take it out to shoot it off the boat and hope it doesn’t get lost in the lake like the rest of mine.

^^This is a very fun gun - probably my favorite gun to shoot.  And yes, my 8 and 9 year olds have been shooting it too, as well as my wife (who is supposedly afraid of the AR-15.)

My 15/22 was having a FTE or two every single magazine.  I finally settled in on that special CCI "tactial" 40 grain ammo, which is specifically designed for this gun.  It looks very similar to the 40gr mini-mags, which is the only ammo that cleanly feeds my Savage 64 without jamming.  But I actually emailed CCI and asked the difference - they said the 40gr "tactical" has a slightly shorter nose compared to the standard 40gr mini-mag, thus optimized for the feed mechanism on the S&W 15/22.

Also, my gunsmith said these guns take a large amount of rounds to properly break in, due to the polymer parts having small burrs, etc.  Not sure how true this is, but after about 500 rounds - some with federal and some with CCI - mine doesn't jam any more and it is a ton of fun to shoot.  Suppressor should be here in about 2-3 more months to make it the ultimate backyard toy.

JS, thanks for the info. I’m going to try a few different rounds through it as I know it can be picky on ammo.  I love shooting my 10/22 that I have spent the time making it almost perfect for me. Eventually I’ll put some kind of optic on the 15/22 as well. Will post up my thoughts on it once I get out to the range/desert to shoot soon. First a good cleaning for it tonight.

Yeah, I think I put a $100 Holsun red dot on it, and I love it.

I also love the front MLOC - I found a $15 dollar bipod on amazon that is amazing quality for the price.  Figured I would experiment with bipods/red dots on this thing before altering my AR15s too much.  This thing looks, feels and operates a lot like the real thing - minus the lighter weight and lack of any kickback, it makes a great AR-15 trainer gun for 5 cents per round.

I think I tried the Federal copper tips, Federal "semi auto" rounds, that cheap thunderbolt crap, and a few CCIs.  Goes without saying that 22s are finicky on ammo, but that tactical CCI round was money.

Yeah that front MLOC panel is nice to have. I’ve got a cheapo  bipod, that works well also, I put on my 10/22 that I use on my AR as well so I can just swap parts from the AR to the rail.

I got one for a great deal last year. I love it as a plinking gun that’s cheap to shoot. I’ve also used it as a super cheap training gun for moving while firing and some other other drills. It’s a great 90% training solution/cheap to shoot. I probably average one or two misfires or failure to fully eject per mag, almost every time it’s when I am rapidly firing and I use what ever cheap crap ammo that’s in my stock pile. Might annoy some people but I look at it as good real life practice clearing the problem in my drills.

Just got back from the range with it. Put about 100 rounds through it with only 1 FTF and that was in the first few rounds. After that nothing else.  Ran CCI mini mags through it, bulk federal, and some 40 gr round nose Winchester designed for the MSR 22’s. I will say the trigger is really smooth for this gun, granted i haven’t shot any 2 stage triggers or some really fancy match triggers. For shooting iron sights at 50yrds the MBUS wasn’t bad. The adjustments on them are a little different but not bad. This one will definitely get regular rotation when I go out for sure.

@SpicoliHow do you like the P365? Just not happy with my XDS 45. Too much caliber in too small of a frame. Handled the 365 a few times and really like the way it feels better than every other compact 9 I've tried.
