May be picking this up Friday (still haggling), a Gen 1 Ruger American in 7.62x39 with a 16.12" barrel, 3x9 Cabela's scope, slotted flash hider and 5 and 10 rd magazines (it uses Mini-30 mags).  Why?  Boatloads of AK ammo sitting around doing nothing since I got into ARs earlier this year.  Plus, it makes for a decent short-to-mid distance (<200 yds) lightweight deer rifle!

I already have a Ruger American in .22 and love it.  I expect my experience will be the same if I get this rifle.

Awesome.  I have several Ruger Americans and enjoy each one; my favorite is my .308.  About 9 months ago I also bought a Ruger Mini 30, love that gun.  Would highly recommend picking one up if you get the chance.

Can't get the local dealer to answer my e-mails/calls.  Looks to be a great suppressor.

It’s my 3rd DA suppressor. They’re all awesome and excellent customer support. Not the only great suppressor company out there, but definitely recommend.

We were still discussing a deal when the seller traded it.  Oh well, they are great rifles; but I already own a lot of great rifles!

I guess the money will go into my supressor fund!

Ruger is a great manufacturer. May have been discussed, but now that the rejuvenated Marlins by Ruger are going strong I can highly recommend them - well at least two of the series so far. Had enough of my standard AR types a decade ago, then moved on to 308/7.62 black rifles, some long range hammers as well as an AK variant = Arsenal. Turns out I’m stuck on these Marlins now. Initially brought on board the 1895 SBL 45/70 to modify it closely to a Mad Pig Thumper. Darn thing was an amazing piece of work in natural form and I just couldn’t do it; however, when the Marlin 1894 - 357 version showed up BAM!!! the Ranger Point Precision hand guard materialized along with the new Magpul stock/internal storage/side quiver, Inforce light and Red dot. Staying away from chaps, but I need a horse as these lever actions are crazy fun to shoot. 45/70 doesn’t kick as much as it’s a push and it’s a blast. Definitely legal in 48 states maybe 49 if the boogie man comes. That 357 rifle puts up some velocity numbers vs a wheel gun and twice as much impact power when relating to ft/lbs. Might over penetrate, but you can adjust with the correct ammunition for home defense. Would I trust it - yes, is it my first choice - not with what’s already in the stable.

Nice.  I don’t have any Marlins, will have to check them out.  I did buy a Henry .357 lever action last year and really like it.

I might go hog hunting in two weeks out in west Texas.  Thinking about taking my Springfield Saint Victor AR-10 for it.

Will you fuckers please stop talking about all the guns that I can't get out of my head once I've seen it? I'm still recovering from the Rattler.

I always toyed with the idea of getting a lever action, but it never even occurred to me that 357 Magnum was a good option. Since I'm not buying anything in a caliber I don't already own...

And they are threaded? Damn it.

And you can shoot .38 Special through it for the wife to practice.

Yup. And it'll be even quieter with a can.

The PTR Vent 1 is calling to me.

Don’t get a Remington-manufactured one (called “Remlins”), roughly 2007-2020 manufactured. Get a 2006 or earlier with a “JM” stamp…or get one of the new ones from Ruger.

Leverguns are awesome. 45-70 Marlin is my favorite, killed many things with that. Next project is a Winchester 1895 rebarreled to 35 Whelen - need a woods gun that I can still reach out 2-250 yds (45-70 is a great gun at 100 yds and in).

Also, I’m screwed in the old western movie reach back memorabilia watching these lever action movie heroes go to town. Even the opening of the series “The Rifleman” starts out just daring you to not buy one of these lever actions to include a live cocking plus stare down at the end. Unsure why he does it as he’s out of ammo, but undeniably cool. I dare you Lord Ratner to watch 30 secs of the opening scene. You will hunt me down with one.

Definitely placed a time stamp on myself and it was worth it.

First gun I bought was the Winchester 30.30. Going out of business sale in Columbus GA. $59.95 cash out the door with two boxes of shells. Still have it. This was in 1977 BTW. I like carrying it in the woods better than my Remington 700s.

I loved that opening scene, it was the main reason I bought a lever action rifle!

A gun I have always wanted and never purchased (going to fix that soon), is the Henry Golden Boy 22 MAG.  A buddy had one and it was a blast to shoot.  Something about the 22 Mag....hot little round.

Well well well... I might have just found the gun my kids will learn to shoot on... Very interesting, and a pretty good price too.

How much different is .22 Magnum compared to LR? I only have experience with the latter.

My sons first gun was a Henry 22 - I still grab it sometimes when I go for a walk and want a nice squirrel killer. Every kid should learn on one!

Did you just get the standard size, or their kid-sized rifle? How hold was your son when you got it for him?

The standard one (they call it the classic); he was almost 9. First squirrel he shot he had to rest the gun on my shoulder because he wasn’t strong enough to off hand it at the time. He could shoot it fine as long as there was something to rest the barrel on (or bench shooting). He got bigger/stronger and could off hand it a year later (he’s also not a big kid to begin with).

Gotcha. I'll probably buy one of the kid sized rifles, since I'd like to start them at around 6, and I can just cycle them through it until they are big enough for the grown up guns.

Got a few years before I need to worry about that. That Marlin 1894 though... That might be a more immediate concern

Yup, I agree. I did modify 357 version and it works well.

Now if Ammo prices will fall just a bit more I can finish filling the semi-truck trailer.

Dollar cost averaging - you should be buying ammo consistently!

Remember, the only part of an AR-15 that matters is the stripped lower receiver. You can regularly get those for $20. That's a cheap form of future gun-control insurance.

I’m still hoping that suppressors will be taken off the NFA list, but I definitely don’t think the GOP will due it via legislation…still a chance I guess with the courts, but I’m not holding my breath.
