M2 Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Nice report. How about the size of the grip? With a .45, my thought would be that if you can't get all fingers on it, it will be awkward/uncomfortable to shoot? That's my complaint about a PPK or the Taurus PT series. With the shorter clip, I have to curl my pinkie under it and I don't much care for that. Is it big enough and if not, does or will Springfield make an extended magazine? Had no problem whatsoever. To be honest, I am not even sure if my ring finger was on the grip or under it, but the recoil was so nominal that it didn't matter. It was easy to keep on target. I didn't over-think it, I just shot it the same as I would any pistol of its size and give how well it performed, no adjustment was necessary. But Springfield does off a 7-round magazine. I just don't feel it's necessary given what I'll be using this particular pistol for. Cheers! M2
bagasticks Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Nice! How much does it weight? My M1A loaded with Sadlak gucci parts got sub MOA but it weights a metric shit ton. .648 MOA 100 yard 3 shot group. oh... it's light.. just under 14 pounds lol..
Smokin Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 oh... it's light.. just under 14 pounds lol.. Sweet rifle. If you don't mind me asking, how much were all the parts and how long did the build take?
bagasticks Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Sage EBR chassis is 700 bucks from Sage, mine was 350 from craiglist, i assume it was a bringback, that was common early when units mod'd their own m14's they would put wood furniture back on them when they turned them in post deployment. I paid 1500 for the rifle, the Aimpoint Pro Patrol i got at cost for 325.00. Vortex hider was 130, buttsctock was 60, grip was 20. Probably 3 hour of labor as you have to take the entire rifle apart to include the gas system and some of that was a pain (factory op rod block). not cheap, but i think the springfield platform is the best battle rifle on the planet. If i was on a budget i would do an AK like Shotgun News did few months ago.. I like AR's for plinking but i wouldn't settle for less than a .30 cal off the range.

I didn't like the small grip of the subcompact XD, so I'm looking forward to this one. Have you heard if Springfield will be offering mag extenders to allow use of the normal mags from the XD in the XDs like Glock does? Or are the mag wells of different size?

Have you heard if Springfield will be offering mag extenders to allow use of the normal mags from the XD in the XDs like Glock does? Or are the mag wells of different size? The mag is single-stack so it is proprietary to the XD-S, however Springfield is already offering 7-round extended mags (next to the stock 5-rounder, not at the same scale)... vs. Although at $39.94 MSRP, I'm in no rush to get 'em. Oddly enough, I put the thinner backstrap on the grip and didn't like it as much as the thicker one. Cheers! M2
Timbonez Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 (edited) Colt has won the Marine Corps M45 MARSOC contract. A modified version of their 1911 Rail Gun will become the M45. https://militarytimes...done-deal/#more The original solicitation is very specific to a 1911 pattern pistol. https://www.fbo.gov/?s=opportunity&mode=form&tab=core&id=b363ec929bda1631f9d80eebb9335f36&_cview=0 Not necessarily a good thing considering the problems during testing. nsplayr Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Anyone ever used this? Looks like frickin' laser beams for your pistol.
B52gator Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 An AR-15 was used in the shooting in Co yesterday. Will be really interesting to see what happens in regards to a AWB.
Timbonez Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Todd Green recently started his long term test of a custom Springfield 1911 built to Scott Warren's specs. It's chambered in 9mm and is a huge change from what Todd has shot in the past. His previous long term tests have been a S&W M&P 9mm, HK P30, HK 45, and Glock 17 Gen4. He worked for Beretta and SIG a while back and now is a highly regarded pistol instructor. Anyway, here is the link to his blog, specifically the latest article for the test: https://pistol-training.com/archives/6942 Additionally, here is a link to the thread in his forum regarding his test: https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?4772-2012-13-PTC-Test-Guns-Springfield-9mm-1911 I have enjoyed reading his endurance tests over the past few years as they provide some very insightful information on each pistol he has shot. Granted each is a sample size of one, but his tests are quite unique in that he shoots a massive amount of ammo through them in a relatively short period of time. It sure is a lot more shooting than all of us shoot. I guess when your job is to shoot and instruct, it kind of goes with the territory. He also gives a lot of information on the gear he uses with each particular pistol, specific modifications that suit his tastes, and an all around thorough explanation of the gun and its performance in the many drills he shoots. His forum has a wealth of knowledge and his blog always has, what I believe to be, good advice.
HeloDude Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 An AR-15 was used in the shooting in Co yesterday. Will be really interesting to see what happens in regards to a AWB. I will bet you a year's worth of flight pay that nothing will happen, as nothing should happen. Sure some on the left will sponsor bills to put more restrictions on 2nd Amendment rights, but it won't go anywhere in Congress. Now this might help speed-up the anti gun legislation in places like California, but those states were trying to pass more anti-gun legislation before the incident.
StoleIt Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 An AR-15 was used in the shooting in Co yesterday. Will be really interesting to see what happens in regards to a AWB. So was a .40 Cal and a shot gun. There will be a panic after this just like the Arizona senator shooting...but nothing will come of it. I would be more curious to see if anything happens to super high capacity mags for AR-15s. The dude had a 100 round mag normally used in 3 gun completions and the like. That is the low hanging fruit IMO.
M2 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Wow, no shit! But I still prefer the old school AK method of taking a flat piece of steel and having a one-toothed Olga pound it into a receiver! Cheers! M2
Getzen2 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Anyone have any information/reviews of Colt or S&W 1917's? I've been looking for a classic double/single action revolver and the local shops have a couple around, but don't know much about them.

I've been looking for a classic double/single action revolver and the local shops have a couple around, but don't know much about them. Do you actually want the 45 ACP or just a double action revolver? 45 ACPs will require moon clips, which can be a plus or minus. I personally don't like dealing with them. I've got a 357 Ruger GP100 (6" stainless) that I'll never sell. (Wolff springs really help, too.) S&W's 686 is equally worthwhile if you like the 357. Then of course there's the bonus of shooting (relatively) cheap 38s all the way to the Buffalo Bore 180gr 357s when you need the power.
brickhistory Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Wow, no shit! Sorry for the dumba$$ question, but what is the process being discussed in the AR build immediately above? I'm not comprehending the "3D printing."

bfargin Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Brick, Jay Leno's garage did a show on 3D printing, probably available on Youtube. It is a inkjet type printing method using glue and plastic media to build any 3d object. It is crazy amazing to see it work. They laser measure an object and the printer prints out a platic exact copy (or scale sized as the above AK builder showed with both sizes). Rainman beat me.

It's light as shit, very little metal content. Edit: Unless of course your more impressed with the 3D printing part. OP said it would make gun control more difficult...I assumed because it was a plastic lower. Edited July 26, 2012 by StoleIt
brickhistory Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 https://www.google.com/ Check it out. This is how the vaunted 5,000 posts record is being achieved? Besides genuinely being ignorant of the process, I was hoping to generate a conversation here.

Besides genuinely being ignorant of the process, I was hoping to generate a conversation here. Sorry Brick, I didn't know you were trying to generate a thread derailing discussion. I thought you were asking what 3D printing was when you asked what 3D printing was. How about this, I'll throw you a couple more specific bones that add some context. If you find this insufficient I suppose I could cut and paste the entire articles. I could also print them out and mail them to you. Or maybe I could print them out, mix them with some yogurt and fruit, throw it in a blender, grab a spoon and....well, you get the picture. Sarcasm aside, these are good SA building articles that are non-technical in nature and should give you a perspective on what the young people are talking about. Enjoy. https://www.economist.com/node/21552892 https://www.economist.com/node/21552903 https://www.economist.com/node/21541382 https://www.economist.com/node/21552901 https://www.economist.com/node/21553017 https://www.economist.com/node/18114221 https://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2012/04/third-industrial-revolution-begins https://www.economist.com/node/18114327 https://www.3dprinter.net/third-industrial-revolution-the-economist-gets-it
StoleIt Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 That's what I was getting at. There are several methods of 3D printing and they're becoming more affordable. CnC lathes and milling machines for metal components have been around a while. I just thought it was significant that we're approaching a point where, after downloading the right software, an individual can pirate a copy of a plastic or polymer weapon component That's not really different from buying a blank lower and milling your own lower...which people have been doing for...well basically a long time via downloaded CAD blueprints. But seriously, the people who are committing violent crimes with guns aren't the same people milling them from blanks or 3d printing. It would be difficult to regulate the sale of say, 100 round AR drum mags, Mag-Pul 30 rounders, or those new AR bump-fire stocks when this guy could print a few for you in his garage. None of those are currently regulated. And drum mag's for AR's blow. Let's be happy the Dark Knight shooter was dumb enough to use it vs bringing several reliable 30rd mags. I've never had any of my P-Mag's or Brownell Tan follower mag's jam on me. Bump fire stocks are beyond stupid. It is so ridiculously easy to turn an AR into full auto as is. Hell, a part in my buddies AR trigger group wiggled it's way out and we had a burst fire AR for a minute. But being ATF fearing citizens we quickly put that gun away until it was fixed.
brickhistory Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 What's this?! A discussion (Slingblade voice to ON: "Some folks might call it a conversation...") on a non-traditional means of firearms production? Sorry, gonna have to ask you to stop: Next you'll be bringing up how, potentially, ATFE and other regulators could jump on this bandwagon with or without Congressional involvement. Or start regulating on each and every other part of any firearm that such "homebrewers" might need to buy to complete their homebuild.
