I'm sure his access and clearance will be unaffected though (always willing to be surprised and have to backtrack on that opinion). Warrior Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 https://ghostgunner.net/ Anyone used one of these? Any input? I have not used one, but I've done some research on them. For what they are, I don't think it's worth it unless you've got a big pile of 80% lowers sitting around and don't already own a router and a drill press. The GG is $1000+, each lower is $50 and they ran into ITAR issues or something that prevented them setting up the forum that they were going to have. If you get one, I'd love to hear how you like it.
busdriver Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Ref the ghost guns thing: If you like tinkering, you'd probably be better off in the long run buying a decent mill and building a cnc conversion. At least you can sell an actual mill once you get bored with it.

At least you can sell an actual mill once you get bored with it. There are about ten of us in my neighborhood who are interested in forming a gun club and going in to purchase one of these. They are $1500 so that would only be a $150 investment per member. I plan to mill out two AR-15 lowers and two AR-10's for myself....so, from a financial aspect, it works out. I probably wouldn't get much use out of getting a real mill that would do other things. Just got too much $hit to do already without adding another hobby. Just curious if anyone has any experience and could speak to the quality, etc? From what I've been able to find online, it's so easy a caveman can operate it which means there's hope for me. Be very careful with this; the ATF ruling from about 18 months ago leaves the door open to you getting in a whole heap of trouble if you don't "manufacture" the lower using tools/machinery that you personally own. To wit: https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/ruling/2015-1-manufacturing-and-gunsmithing/download Note the overly general terminology in the last section of the document, especially the phrase "unlicensed machine shop". 1
JarheadBoom Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 5 hours ago, Hacker said: ...especially the phrase "unlicensed machine shop". WTF? When did we start having to license & register machine tools? [/sarcasm; rhetorical question] I have a friend whose garage is better equipped than the no-shit machine shop at one of my previous employers (a Part 145 Repair Station). He's an IT geek by day, and makes stuff on his lathe & mill (that he converted from manual to CNC) because he likes to make stuff from metal after wrangling 1s and 0s all day. That makes me think it's perhaps not a good idea for me to finish an 80% (or even a 0%) lower in his garage, on his machines, for my use.
HerkFE Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I'll do some more checking on it. I read somewhere that gun clubs bought these and members could use it. Can't remember where I saw it so I don't know how "official" it was.
HerkFE Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I definitely don't want to do anything illegal. Just trying to make my own guns that big brother can't trace. Not sure where the line is drawn in who "owns" the machine. If ten of us split the cost equally and only make our own guns, is that illegal? What if just my dad and I split the cost of the machine and only make our own guns? I'm not arguing here, just wondering....

But when you start getting into large groups, the line becomes fuzzy. I'd split it with with a brother or best friend (or both), and then basically keep it at the place of the person who "owns" it. He can then give it to you at no cost, "you own it", you keep it at your place and you can "sell" it back... etc. It's the dealing with 10 people that make the dance just too confusing and convoluted. Leave it to the government to make something as simple as the concept of ownership... confusing. I know what you mean. It's just that we are legitimate. I guess my point is where does it legally say that two people can be equal owners, but three can't? Or can three but not four? I realize it's perception but damn. 1

viper154 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 I've been building a semi high end AR, got my Daniel Defense upper, 2 stage match trigger, and parts kit for my lower, got the lower entirely put together except for the pistol grip, the screw to hold to grip was going in really tight so I backed the screw and the hole tapped in the lower is to small, and the screw I started was enough to start its own grooves in the aluminum. What do y'all recommend, getting a tap and tapping it myself or trying to find a machine shop to do it for me? I've never tapped a hole (sts) and I would rather not f**k my $120 lower up. I'm in Cannon so my local business options are limited.
hispeed7721 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 I had almost the exact same issue...$10 at Home Depot and some patience work perfectly. The biggest piece of advice if you're going to do it yourself...make sure you are constantly backing out the tap and clearing any fouling out or there's a good chance you can snap the tap. And if that happens you're completely SOL. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1

He might charge a little bit though, but his builds and inventory is epic........and by that I mean, he threw them all into Lake Havasu.
