Help,I went for a 6 mile trail run during winter break and wound up with a stress fracture of the second/third metatarsal of the left foot. Our Det. normally runs indoors all winter and I guess I`m not used to the harder surface outdoors, anyhow will this mess up my chances for a field training slot?I`m told everyone has to qualify at PFT before Feb. ,the Doc says it can be up to 12 weeks to heal a stress fracture.I`m on scholarship,in my second year, will I lose that too?I did a search ,couldn`t find anything about this.I passed the PFT no problem before break ,don`t know if that helps.I couldn`t of done this at a worse time.

Dude, I think you've got some time, unless AFROTC has decided to change the QFR timeline for this year..

Per the 2007 FTM: "QUALIFYING FITNESS REVIEW (QFR). Not earlier than 30 days prior to the end of the spring term, and not later than one day prior to departing for FT, cadets must pass the AFROTC Physical Fitness Test, which includes a body composition assessment."

Also, I ran cross country in High School, and got a stress fracture in the fourth metatarsal of my left foot during junior year. I did some non-impact activities like cycling and swimming to stay in shape.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the info,my bad didn`t see that, thought you had to qualify before the Feb. slot allocations.I`m still not out of the woods though,I wasn`t able to do my Commercial Pilot check ride prior to winterbreak due to weather,I`m supposed to do it Jan 7,school starts back Jan 14,I don`t think my flight instructor is going to like the walking cast on my foot.If I don`t do the check ride I`ll be 2 credit hours short of full time status for the fall semester. All I can do is hope my Det. will work with me on that, but I know the Sargent is not going to like the extra paperwork.

How bad is the stress fx? I had a metatarsal stress fx when I ran XC and I was still able to race on it (5K). If it's not that bad and you let it rest, I'm sure you can physically do the PFA without making it worse seeing as it's only 1.5 miles on a soft track. As for FT... I wouldn't push it. Some guy had a stress fracture in his tibia at FT and he didn't tell anyone until it finally completely broke, with bone showing through the skin and all.
