since when? This would be news to me. My credit/debit card was what I used almost exclusively at any of the BXs I stopped at on my way to and from OIF. Has the policy changed in the last 4 months?

Was there from Aug 07 - Feb 08. Had to cash a personal check at finance and use cash or get a debit card via finance. Forget the name of that special card. No personal credit/debit cards that I was aware of (BX/other AFES stuff)

I just left there 4 weeks ago, I used my debit card for the last 4 months with no problem. You can't get cash back and there are no ATM's. Finance was pushing the eagle card, which is a prepaid debit card dealy. I didn't see the benefit to it, but a lot of people use it.

I'll do ya one better...I was there 3 weeks ago. You could use credit cards and debit cards at the BX and if you asked the TCN real nice they'd let you do up to 20 bucks cash back. But that got old and I just went with the Eagle Card...actually really easy to use since everyone took it and there were kiosks everywhere. I have yet to figure out who is getting kick backs from the eagle card...cause you know someone is...otherwise they'd put in CC/ATM machines.

One more reason to buy at home:

Another thing; alot of time when you purchase a new computer you have to be online to get alot of the programs you want to add on to it (media players, picture viewer's etc...)

This would mean there is some corruption around military contracts, you know the core values my friend...Integrity first. Who would possibly try to scam money from the government?

I've been here for a couple months now and while I don't know firsthand, I've been told that the delay for the Wifi is due to negotiations with the Qataris since the carrier would be a local provider. I heard they want to be able to prosecute individuals for downloading porn, while the Air Force is trying to get a no-restrictions type Internet access.

In case they haven't sorted all the wi fi stuff out by the time I get there, is there any other option on base for getting on the internet, i.e internet cafe or hot spot? (with the exception of letting comm f*ck with your computer)

Yeah, there is another way of getting on the internet - you can use the government computer that is in your room (if you are aircrew that is - I found out that the MX guys and most non-aircrew don't have the pre-positioned computers). They unblocked all webmail, so you can check yahoo, hotmail, etc. It is still a base computer, but it is totally for your personal use. You can watch movies (they have a good streaming media section on the intranet there with hundreds of movies to choose from "on demand," if you will). They do block out youtube, myspace, and the other usual suspects. Overall, the only thing I would have used my laptop for was to look at the porn that I might have tried to slip through customs. You won't have to give your personal computer to comm, though because you will already have internet in your room.

I guess I stand corrected. I thought you tanker guys had them too. Anyway, all rooms in the C-130 aircrew buildings have the pre-positioned computers in them. It is like the 3 buildings or so across from where the tanker guys stay. Either way, I guess if you are not a C-130 aircrew, then you will not have a PC in your room.

From what I heard, someone from a few rotations ago worked some deal to get the computers in our dorms. I would think that someone at Tanker Ops could pull some strings and do the same. Just a thought.

And yes, I agree, if you use a lot of other software besides Office and the internet, then you need your personal laptop anyway.

So apparently now you are not allowed to connect external storage devices to USAFCENT computers. YGBSM! So my Offutt issued thumb drive with pubs on it I can't use out here? Everytime I think this place starts to be normal they go and pull something like this. Now that we have Cyber command I'm sure we'll have an entire squadron of "Cyber Warriors" prowling the Deid network in search of unauthorized storage devices connected to government computers. Like we need more Douche Nozzles on this base getting their "combat" deployment here.

That is just a complete morale killer with the NO EXTERNAL DRIVE rule. It is almost like they look for things that people enjoy at that place and try and take them away.

I'd advise everyone to bring a laptop in and take up entirely too much desk space and overload all of the outlets. And maybe just download every damn pub and form out there and take up as much drive space to slow down the govt computer. Not to hamper the msn so to speak but just to maybe show the smart ones who make these decisions that external drives and flash drives etc... do indeed serve a purpose. Sure on your external you may have some movies, some music maybe even some morale...BUT you also have handy forms, old EPR's etc... that benefit the AF becuase you can do your job more efficiently.

We've got 3/4 of the folks on this base who are NOT supporting the mission other than making up stupid rules like these that have no real impact but serve as a notice to what THEY think the priority is here, not getting Bombs/Gas/ISR/Troops/Supplies downrange. Evey body here has the most important job, just ask them. It's all a matter of perspective, of which the shoes have none becasue they consider here combat. Plus it goes along with the thrad about Deidness.

There should be a gayness at Salem thread as well. We're seeing some stupid shit here as well (especially with the AEF swapout and all the new tards). And why do people that don't go into Iraq on a daily basis get paid hazardous duty pay (like 97% of Salem)? Salem is a pretty safe place just like the Deid. I don't know how the SF here don't stab their eyes out due to boredom (a buddy of mine is SF here and says nothing ever happens).

I am leaving here shortly for my first Deid deployment after several at Salem. I heard that Wrong Start at Salem is 2 days long now, how long does that mandatory fun last at the Deid? I am looking forward to the some of the perks (3 drinks) but I am not looking forward to the clerks at all. I remember I would always tell our new guys at Salem that you should always look at someone's boots to see what they did for a living. You could always tell those that would be first to point out and infraction-however minor-because their boots always looked straight out the box while trying to bitch someone out for looking jacked in a flight suit after flying a 12+ hour mission. I will never get it.

It seems every shoeclerk at the Deid who had a forum (like the Desert Penguin) always wrote a carbon copy. It almost like they send all E-7+ to a Deid prep course. They may change the wording around, but it's the same useless drivel being puked up by a shoeclerk with an overdeveloped sense of self-importance.

The "Force Protection" aspect was always laughable. Like a terrorist would give up the second he was told to tuck his shirt in.

The funniest was when the wing chief at the Deid wrote an article about how deeply he believed that adhereance to the Deid's dress code was the basis for your approach to everything else you do. Basically it was something to the tune of "If you don't wear sandles with a backstrap, how do I know you're not also cutting corners while flying your aircraft?"

The thoughts of someone who has never once been on flight orders....noted.
