isuguy1234 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 So I'm gonna be goin to the fuge in the not so distant future for t-38s at holloman. I've heard the -117 pilots used to be pretty cool as far as showin you around the jets and whatever else once you're done with the fuge. Is there anything like this still goin on out there now with the -22s? Just wonderin if there's anything really cool we can do while we're out there besides getting our faces mushed in, in the fuge and besides stayin at the camino....

If the Fuge isn't going to crush your world ... then volunteer to go first. Get it done and overwith and then split. Drive back to El Paso, get a hotel there near the airport. Cab it into Juarez and enjoy a lovely evening of cultural enlightenment. Just don't try to walk out of Juarez ... it's a bad idea ... trust me.

Drive back to El Paso, get a hotel there near the airport. Cab it into Juarez and enjoy a lovely evening of cultural enlightenment. Just don't try to walk out of Juarez ... it's a bad idea ... trust me. I think there's still a ban on crossing the border. Definitely go back to El Paso. We rented a car both times and were out of Holloman by 1 or 2. You only get reimbursed for the cost of a room on base, but there's ways around that. We had a place 10 minutes from the airport since most of our flights left early the next morning. There are lots of bars within walking distance of most hotels. Don't stay at Holloman. Nothing to do.
brabus Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Look up Inn of the Mountain Gods casino/resort. It's about 45 min up the road (opposite direction of El Paso from Holloman) and is a great time. Great place to drink, gamble and have a good time in general. El Paso seems to be one of those places that sucks unless you know the "good spots." Unless you have really good intel on El Paso, fuck that and go to the casino. It's a great time even if you don't gamble; I've been twice. And also, whatever you do, fuck the stupid shuttle and get a rental car, regardless of what your orders say.
brickhistory Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Cloudcroft - 20/30 minutes from Alamogordo, really nice, up in the mountains, think Sedona-lite. If you are looking to get hammered and laid, probably not the place.
trailmix Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Can't comment on other UPT bases but if you're going from CBM the OG forbids you from staying in El Paso that night unless your flight is before 7AM or some crap like that. Regardless, take the rental car an hour up the road to rodiso/tuliroso area, its really nice in the mountains. There's a decent steakhouse called "cattle baron's" up there with a good salad bar and an awesome prime rib. You'll go right passed the casino- looked a little shady but could be fun.
brabus Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Must be thinking of a different casino...this one's definitely far from shady: https://www.innofthemountaingods.com/
isuguy1234 Posted September 30, 2008 Author Posted September 30, 2008 awesome thanks for the replies.....as far as the f-22s out there, are ops squadrons usually somewhat accomodating if we drop in for a look around??
HuggyU2 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 May have changed, but as of a few weeks ago, there were only 2 jets there, and they were there for the MX folks. However, there are some late model T-38A's you can go see near base ops...

All of the advice given has one thing in common; leave Holloman immediately following the torture chamber.
WheelzUp Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 HA! What's your hang-up on walking through a -22 squadron? I'm betting they won't let you anywhere near the jet. All of the advice given has one thing in common; leave Holloman immediately following the torture chamber. Nah, don't leave. Enjoy the TDY! "2" on Inn of the Mountain Gods, its beautiful up there. Plus you wont find anything much in El Paso worth your while anyway. Like was previously mentioned, the Juarez thing is either off-limits, or a bad idea. There is plenty of stuff to see/do up in the Cloudcroft area in the mountains near Alamogordo. At any rate, yeah take the 'fuge ride early and blast. Otherwise you are in for a rediculously long day of sitting around. Have fun. Wheelz
brabus Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Also, rooms at the casino are a little over $100/night...it's worth it to get a room, split it, and be able to hang out all night at the casino/resort gambling/boozing and then drive to El Paso the next day to leave. Just get a flight out that doesn't leave before 1 or so.
MT near Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 When I was there back in late June, we attended a roll call at the 22 squadron. It was an experiance let me say.......not as much fun as we thought it would be. We couldnt get anyone to give us a clear answer on seeing a 22. But we probably asked the wrong people. Find someone over in the 22 squadron and they will most likely have the best advice? isuguy....you from Vance?
brabus Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I've heard all the -22 roll calls are super lame, but I guess they sort of have to be considering their high vis.
isuguy1234 Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 sounds good on everything, and the hang up on the -22s is just that I haven't seen one up close yet, so I didn't know if they were able to show us or anything like that. Just a young buck wanting to check out the latest and greatest up close that's all. MT near,I'm at Whiting now, will be at Vance before too long. Are you at Vance I take it? Class #?

I can understand that, but i would be really surprised if they let you any closer than you can see at an airshow. Go to El Paso or the casino and drink some beer. Seriously. Don't hang around Holloman.
SocialD Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) I can understand that, but i would be really surprised if they let you any closer than you can see at an airshow. Go to El Paso or the casino and drink some beer. Seriously. Don't hang around Holloman. Went there a month ago and our group got a pretty good look at a 22. I was close enough to crawl in the wheel well and missile bays. Didn't get to look in the cockpit, to be honest it's not much to look at on the outside. It was more interesting to see the layout of the systems inside the aircraft, neat stuff that would have made my life easier when I was a maintainer. Ask nicely and they will give you a tour. We left right after the tour and got a hotel in El Paso. You have plenty of time to get the fuge done, go do a tour and still get to El Paso for some beer. Edited October 3, 2008 by SocialD
brickhistory Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Don't forget ze Ghermans mit der numerous Tornadoes. Might be able to see some neat stuff up close there as well.

I thought ze Germans had split from Hollow-man!? Last I was there (diggety-aught-5 ... with an onion on my belt, which was the fashion at the time) they were packing up.

German Training Center Holloman AFB It's been since '04 when I wrote about a group of Phantom phanatics (groupies) having a pilgrimage to honor the 20FS and its training of the last German Rhinos and subsequent closing that I've been back to Holloman. I thought there were even more Tornadoes now (in excess of 40-ish?) German Air Force in the US Fact Sheet
Slander Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Anyone been down to holloman recently? I'll be going down there in a couple weeks for the initial -38 qual. Still go to the casino and avoid holloman like the plague? Thanks.
brabus Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Still go to the casino and avoid holloman like the plague? There's only one right answer and that's it.
